Southwest’s Wanna Get Away fare has been replaced by Basic, effective May 28, 2025. For a new booking, Basic is the lowest bundle, and it includes a carry-on bag, a small personal item, qualifying Rapid Rewards earning, and a Standard seat assigned at check-in for travel on or after January 27, 2026. It does not include choosing a seat at booking, a guaranteed free checked bag, a refund, or a free change. Most of the confusion around the old fare comes from those last four exclusions, so they are covered in detail below.
What changed when Wanna Get Away became Basic
Wanna Get Away was Southwest’s entry-level fare. Southwest replaced it with Basic on May 28, 2025, and that is the name you will see on current bookings. If an older article, receipt, or screenshot refers to Wanna Get Away, read it as the same lowest-price bundle under its former name.
The seating rules changed at a separate point. Before assigned seating, travelers on this fare chose from open seating at the gate. Assigned seating applies to travel on or after January 27, 2026. If your trip is earlier than that date, the open-seating description you remember may be the correct one for that flight.
What Basic includes
- A carry-on bag and a small personal item. Southwest’s fare page lists both among Basic inclusions. Its dated example fare display, from the official fare-format PDF with a September 5, 2025 example, also shows one carry-on and one small personal item.
- A Standard seat assigned at check-in. Under the current assigned-seating system, Basic travelers receive a Standard seat at check-in. The fare does not let you pick that seat when you book.
- Qualifying Rapid Rewards earning. Southwest’s fare page lists earning on Basic. Earning rates and eligibility are set by Southwest’s Rapid Rewards rules and can change, so confirm the amount shown for your itinerary before you book.
What the sample fare display shows, and what it does not
The September 5, 2025 example in Southwest’s fare-format PDF lists free inflight entertainment on your own device and included snacks and beverages. That is one dated sample layout, not a promise that every flight provides those items. Treat them as examples of how the fare is presented, not as guarantees for your trip.
