What’s Happening to Crypto Today? Bitcoin, Ether and Market Drivers on October 8, 2026

Bitcoin and Ether were lower in an October 8 snapshot, while the prior week showed weak market breadth and Ether underperforming BTC. Here’s what the data and reported market context do—and don’t—say.

As of Coinucation’s October 8 snapshot at 19:18 UTC, Bitcoin was $81,450, down 2.33% over 24 hours, while Ether was $2,450, down 4.40%. Separately, Talos’s review of October 1–7 showed a broad but uneven weekly pullback: total crypto market capitalization fell 1.2%, and only 10 of the top 50 assets rose. Talos pointed to macroeconomic and geopolitical developments alongside the reversal, but the available figures do not establish one cause for the move.

Today’s price snapshot is not the same as the weekly market picture

Coinucation displayed these prices and 24-hour returns at 19:18 UTC on October 8, 2026. They are that provider’s snapshot, not a reconciled official close. Talos’s weekly returns below cover October 1–7, a separate period.

Asset Coinucation snapshot, Oct. 8 at 19:18 UTC Talos return, Oct. 1–7
Bitcoin (BTC) $81,450; down 2.33% over 24 hours Down 0.4%
Ether (ETH) $2,450; down 4.40% over 24 hours Down 4.2%
Solana (SOL) Not stated in this snapshot Down 1.6%

Talos also reported that ETH/BTC fell 3.85% during the week, meaning Ether underperformed Bitcoin over that period. Coinucation’s same-time snapshot showed BTC dominance at 59.2%, ETH gas at 2.1 gwei, and its Fear & Greed reading at 64, labeled “greed.” Those indicators describe different aspects of the market; none, by itself, explains the day’s price change.

Why crypto is under pressure

Talos’s October 8 State of the Market review linked the week’s reversal to a combination of macroeconomic and geopolitical news. It cited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, oil moving above $100, and the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield reaching its highest level since 2002. These are Talos’s contemporaneous explanations and market context, not proof that any one event caused crypto prices to fall.

  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Jobs data and changing rate expectations

Talos said the month began with softer-than-expected U.S. employment data: 29,000 jobs were added, compared with about 90,000 expected. The report said this lowered the odds of an October rate hike. Equities later reached highs amid earnings and AI optimism even as yields rose, before the Wednesday reversal described in the report. The sequence shows why crypto can react to several competing signals rather than one simple “risk-on” or “risk-off” trigger.

Correlations are observations, not forecasts

Talos reported that Bitcoin’s relationship with the Nasdaq 100 had recovered above 0.5. It also said that during September’s yield surge, Bitcoin diverged from equities, traded inversely to the dollar with a reported correlation of −0.55, and moved alongside gold with a correlation of +0.6. Binance Research separately reported that BTC’s correlation with the U.S. 10-year real yield fell to −0.31 in August, its lowest since 2010, and said further rises in real yields could weigh on BTC. Correlations depend on the period measured; they do not prove causation or reliably predict what comes next.

What ETF-flow reports say—and why daily totals conflict

The reporting windows matter. Talos reported $370 million in net inflows to spot Bitcoin ETFs over its past-week window, 29% less than in the prior week. Its reported 30-day total remained positive at $1.42 billion. These are Bitcoin fund figures for Talos’s stated periods, not a measure of all institutional demand or of purchases of Bitcoin outside those funds.

Same-day reporting on the latest session was inconsistent: Coinucation’s October 8 snapshot, Nexo, and CoinStats AI displayed materially different daily Bitcoin and Ether ETF-flow figures. Without a common underlying tracker and cutoff, those daily totals cannot be treated as a reconciled result. The weekly Talos figure and the disputed daily figures should not be combined. For the question “Are ETF flows positive or negative?”, the clearest supported answer is that Talos’s Bitcoin ETF flow was positive over its past-week window, while the exact latest-session total is not established by these reports.

Derivatives show how a reversal can gather force

Talos reported that more than $400 million in crypto long positions were liquidated within an hour during Wednesday’s reversal. For the full week, it reported BTC liquidations of $366.5 million, up 32.6% week over week, and ETH liquidations of $323.3 million, up 24.5%; most were on the long side. A long liquidation occurs when a leveraged position betting on rising prices is forcibly closed, often adding selling pressure. Liquidations can amplify a move, but they do not identify its original cause.

At the same time, Talos reported that open interest—the value of outstanding derivatives positions—rose 5.7% week over week to $46.3 billion for BTC and 0.6% to $27.4 billion for ETH. BTC annualized funding fell 2.83 percentage points to +3.97%. Taken together, these figures indicate that derivatives positioning remained substantial even as bullish positions were being liquidated; they do not show that every trader held the same view.

Market breadth and trading activity were weak

Talos put total crypto market capitalization at $2.94 trillion for October 1–7, down 1.2% on the week. Only 10 of the top 50 assets advanced, compared with 37 two weeks earlier. Declining capitalization outweighed advancing capitalization by $105.2 billion to $6.9 billion. That narrow participation helps explain why a relatively resilient Bitcoin did not mean the broader market was healthy.

Weekly activity measure Talos figure for Oct. 1–7 Change week over week
Spot exchange volume $199.1 billion Down 7.8%
Futures volume $947.4 billion Down 10.8%

Performance was mixed beyond BTC and ETH: Talos reported a 9% weekly gain for Aave even as Ether and Solana fell. Stablecoin supply increased by approximately $393 million over the week, led by Falcon Finance’s USDF. Ethena’s USDe and Sky’s USDS were among the leading stablecoin supply growers over 30 days. Supply growth is market-structure context, not evidence that stablecoins directly supported spot prices.

How this week fits into September’s rally

Talos’s weekly pullback followed a stronger month. Binance Research’s October 6 report said crypto market capitalization rose 11.0% to $2.99 trillion during September, despite a Fed rate hike and a failed Senate cloture vote on the CLARITY Act. It reported $3.49 billion in September spot Bitcoin ETF inflows; those inflows turned 2026 net flows positive on September 23 for the first time that year. These are September figures, not today’s ETF flow.

Binance Research also noted a Bitcoin “golden cross” on September 8, a moving-average signal it described as a medium-term momentum indicator rather than a catalyst by itself. The September figures provide context for the market’s recent strength but do not negate the weaker breadth and declines Talos recorded for October 1–7.

What to check when interpreting the next crypto move

  • Match the time window. A 24-hour price change, a weekly return, and a 30-day ETF-flow total answer different questions.
  • Compare like with like. Check whether a flow report covers Bitcoin funds or Ether funds, which funds it includes, and what cutoff it uses before comparing it with another provider.
  • Look beyond Bitcoin. Breadth and ETH/BTC performance can show whether a move is broad-based or concentrated in the largest asset.
  • Separate spot activity from leverage. Exchange volume, futures volume, open interest, funding, and liquidations describe different parts of the market.
  • Treat macro links as context. Yields, oil, currencies, and equity correlations can help frame market behavior, but they do not establish a single cause or guarantee a future direction.

Talos’s Tanay Ved, Senior Research Associate, summarized the shifting relationships this way: “Bitcoin’s relationship to macro assets has continued to shift beneath the surface.” For a personal-finance reader, that is a reason to be cautious about turning one day’s price move, one ETF-flow headline, or one correlation into a stand-alone investment conclusion.
