What You’re Entitled to When Your Flight Gets Delayed or Canceled

A flight disruption can mean a refund, rerouting, care or compensation—but the rules differ. Learn which details determine your rights and how to file a claim.

You may be entitled to a refund, a replacement flight, meals or accommodation, or fixed compensation—but these are separate remedies, and none applies automatically to every disruption. The answer depends chiefly on your route, the airline that operated the flight, what happened, how late you reached your final destination, and whether you choose to travel on an alternative. The rules below cover the United States, European Union, United Kingdom and Canada; they are not a worldwide survey or a decision on any individual claim.

Start with the route, the airline and your choice

Before asking what the airline owes, identify the disrupted flight’s origin and destination, the operating carrier, and whether your connecting flights were on one reservation. Then establish whether the flight was canceled, delayed or rerouted, when the airline told you, and when you actually reached your final destination. These facts determine which passenger-rights rules may apply and whether a connection counts as part of the same journey.

More than one framework may be relevant to an itinerary. The United States rule described here primarily governs ticket refunds; EU passenger rights, UK261 and Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) can provide other forms of protection. Do not assume that the law where you live—or the airline’s home country—alone determines your rights.

Refund, rerouting, care and compensation are different

  • Refund: Money back for transportation you will not use. It is generally tied to declining travel or an offered alternative, rather than being a payment for inconvenience.
  • Rerouting: A replacement journey offered under the rules that apply. If you accept it, you may be able to continue traveling, but your refund options can change.
  • Care: Assistance while you wait, potentially including food, refreshments, communication, a hotel and transport to it. Its availability depends on the jurisdiction and circumstances.
  • Compensation: An additional payment for qualifying disruption. Eligibility may depend on the cause, notice, delay at the final destination and other conditions. A refund does not itself establish a right to compensation.

A disruption can qualify for one remedy and not another. For instance, extraordinary circumstances may defeat fixed compensation under EU or UK rules even when separate assistance or rerouting rights apply. Conversely, the US refund rule does not establish a universal fixed cash payment for an ordinary delay or cancellation.

How the main rules compare

Framework Where it may apply Key trigger or remedy Important qualification
United States — DOT refund rules US itineraries covered by the Department of Transportation’s refund guidance For significant change or delay, arrival at least 3 hours late on a domestic itinerary or 6 hours late on an international itinerary can qualify as a significant change for refund purposes. Under the DOT guidance, a traveler who takes the changed flight or an offered alternative generally is not entitled to the ticket refund.
European Union — passenger rights Intra-EU flights on EU or non-EU airlines; flights departing the EU to a non-EU country on any airline; and some arrivals from outside the EU operated by an EU airline, subject to the official conditions. Arrival at the final destination at least 3 hours late may qualify for compensation; a departure delay of 5 hours or more can permit reimbursement and return to the starting point where applicable. Compensation may not be due in extraordinary circumstances; the airline must substantiate that defense.
United Kingdom — UK261 Flights covered by UK passenger-rights rules Arrival more than 3 hours late may qualify for compensation. Published CAA amounts include £220 for flights under 1,500 km and £350 for flights from 1,500 to 3,500 km. Extraordinary circumstances may defeat compensation. The amount for a long-haul flight depends on the arrival delay.
Canada — APPR Flights to, from and within Canada, including connecting flights Inconvenience compensation requires, among other conditions, arrival at least 3 hours late and notice no more than 14 days before departure. It applies only to qualifying disruptions fully within the airline’s control and not required for safety; a written claim is due within one year.

Thresholds and amounts in this table are from the official guidance cited below, not a guarantee that a particular claim will succeed. The EU Commission’s Your Europe page was marked last checked 21 September 2026; the US DOT, UK CAA and Canadian Transportation Agency pages are current guidance accessed in 2026. Check the regulator’s latest instructions for your itinerary.

What each jurisdiction may provide

United States: a refund if you decline a qualifying change

The US DOT says a passenger is entitled to a refund when an airline cancels a flight and the passenger chooses not to travel or accept a credit, voucher or other offered form. The significant-change thresholds in the table concern late arrival, not simply how long the aircraft was delayed at departure. If you take the changed flight or an alternative, the DOT ticket-refund right generally no longer applies.

That refund rule is separate from food, hotel or other customer-service commitments. The DOT advises checking the airline’s commitments for expenses or amenities it may provide when a controllable disruption causes sufficient inconvenience. The cited guidance does not establish a blanket fixed cash-compensation entitlement for ordinary US delays and cancellations.

European Union: choice after cancellation, and possible compensation

For a covered cancellation, passengers can choose reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or later rebooking at their convenience, subject to seat availability. A long departure delay can also allow reimbursement and, where applicable, a return flight to the journey’s starting point. These are choices about travel, separate from possible compensation for a late arrival at the final destination.

Assistance while waiting depends on the duration of the delay and the flight distance. Compensation is not automatic: extraordinary circumstances can be a defense, and the airline must substantiate it. Keep EU rules distinct from UK261; they are separate frameworks.

United Kingdom: refund or rerouting after cancellation, plus possible care

For a cancellation, the UK government guide describes a choice between a refund within 7 days—with return to the first departure point where applicable—or rerouting under comparable conditions. A cancellation announced within 14 days may support compensation, but the result depends on extraordinary-circumstance exceptions and the timing of an alternative flight. For qualifying delays, care can include meals, refreshments, communication, overnight accommodation and transport to and from the hotel.

The CAA says to claim from the airline first. If the airline’s final response does not resolve the matter, or more than eight weeks have passed, ADR or the CAA’s PACT service may be available, depending on eligibility.

Canada: identify the disruption category before claiming

The APPR distinguishes disruptions within an airline’s control, those within its control but required for safety, and those outside its control. Rebooking duties and options vary with that category and with whether the carrier is large or small. In some outside-control situations, if the airline cannot arrange travel within 48 hours, a refund or rebooking is available. Care and refund rights should be checked against the specific category rather than inferred from the compensation rules.

For qualifying inconvenience compensation, the CTA requires a written claim within one year. A passenger cannot receive APPR inconvenience compensation for the same disruption if already compensated under another jurisdiction’s rules.

What to do after a delay or cancellation

  1. Record the journey: Save the original itinerary, booking confirmation, disruption notice, airline messages and the actual arrival time at your final destination. Keep proof that connecting flights were on one reservation, if relevant.
  2. Ask for the reason: Request the airline’s explanation in writing and ask which passenger-rights framework it is applying. The cause can matter to compensation and care even when a refund question is separate.
  3. Choose whether to continue: Decide whether you want rerouting or to stop traveling and seek a refund. Before accepting an alternative, confirm what that choice means for your refund rights under the applicable rules.
  4. Keep expense evidence: Save itemized receipts for necessary, reasonable costs and retain proof of payment. Submit expenses and compensation as separate claims if the airline’s process requires it.
  5. File with the airline: State the flight, booking, disruption, remedy sought and relevant supporting records. For a Canadian APPR inconvenience claim, submit the written claim within the one-year deadline.
  6. Escalate if needed: If the airline rejects the claim or does not resolve it, use the complaint, regulator or ADR route available under the applicable framework. In the UK, the CAA says ADR or PACT escalation may be possible after the airline’s final response or after more than eight weeks.

Check EU reform claims against the effective date

On 13 July 2026, the Council of the European Union announced final clearance for stronger air passenger rights, including changes concerning compensation, assistance, information, communication and rerouting. Its announcement also mentions return-flight boarding and hand-baggage price transparency. The announcement alone does not establish when each provision begins to apply. Do not assume a proposed or adopted change is already operative without checking the legal act and effective date.

Official guidance

  • US Department of Transportation, “Refunds” — refund rights and significant-change guidance.
  • European Commission, Your Europe, “Air passenger rights” — coverage, cancellation, delay and remedies.
  • UK Government, “Air passenger travel guide” — refunds, rerouting, care and cancellation compensation.
  • UK Civil Aviation Authority, “Delays” — delay compensation, amounts and escalation.
  • Canadian Transportation Agency, “Air Passenger Protection Regulations” — APPR scope, rebooking, refunds, compensation and claims.
  • Council of the European Union, 13 July 2026 announcement on stronger air passenger rights.

These are general rules, not individualized legal advice. The applicable right depends on the actual itinerary and circumstances, so check the current official guidance for your flight before filing.
