Its forecasts put U.S. corn production at 16.0 billion bushels and wheat production at 1,531 million bushels for the 2026/27 marketing year. As of October 8, USDA’s next scheduled WASDE is October 9 at noon ET. The August figures are forecasts, not final harvest results.
What WASDE measures
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) outlook covers annual supply and use of U.S. and world wheat, rice, coarse grains, oilseeds, and cotton. The World Agricultural Outlook Board coordinates the work, chairs interagency commodity committees, and issues the report. USDA’s WASDE page

For a reader following food and farm markets, the key distinction is that WASDE is a forecast and balance sheet, not a final count of what was harvested or sold. Each monthly release updates estimates as information changes.
What changed in the August 2026 outlook
Corn: production forecast rose slightly, but ending stocks fell
In WASDE-674, USDA forecast 2026/27 U.S. corn production at 16.0 billion bushels, 13 million bushels above its July estimate. Harvested area increased by 1.2 million acres, largely offset by a lower yield forecast. USDA characterized the balance sheet as lower supplies, unchanged domestic use, larger exports, and smaller ending stocks. August 12, 2026 WASDE-674
#1 Best Overall
“This month’s 2026/27 U.S. corn outlook is for lower supplies, unchanged domestic use, larger exports, and smaller ending stocks.”
There is no contradiction between a slightly higher production forecast and lower overall supplies: production is only one part of supply, and the balance sheet incorporates other components as well. The cited summary does not provide enough detail to quantify each component’s contribution here.
Wheat: production and ending stocks declined; projected price rose
USDA lowered its 2026/27 U.S. wheat production forecast by 5 million bushels from July, to 1,531 million, mainly because of lower harvested area and yield. Forecast ending stocks fell 5 million bushels to 717 million, 22% below the prior year. USDA raised its season-average farm price forecast by $0.20 per bushel to $6.20. These are forecast revisions in the August report, not realized crop, inventory, or price results. August 12, 2026 WASDE-674

How to read a WASDE revision
When comparing a new release with July’s, separate the balance sheet into supply, use, and the amount left at the end of the marketing year. Then compare the forecast with the previous marketing year where the report provides that comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
- Supply: Look at beginning stocks and forecast production. Production changes can reflect acreage, yield, or both.
- Use: Check domestic use and exports. A change in either can alter the projected balance even when production moves in the opposite direction.
- Ending stocks: This is the projected amount remaining after supply and use are accounted for. It is a forecast, not a count of physical stocks on release day.
- Price: Identify whether the number is a season-average farm price forecast, a revision to that forecast, or an observed price. Those are different measures.
Do not infer a stocks-to-use ratio from a summary that does not supply the verified figures needed to calculate it. The August summary figures cited here do not establish that ratio.
Why the companion crop report matters
USDA’s August Crop Production report is relevant context for the WASDE crop outlook. The National Agricultural Statistics Service said its yield estimates used producer-reported information alongside Farm Service Agency acreage data and statistical methods. NASS described the data as useful for decisions involving marketing, production, and risk management, among other audiences and purposes. USDA NASS, August 12, 2026

Deputy Secretary Stephen Alexander Vaden said, “Producer participation in the Agricultural Yield Survey makes a difference in the quality of USDA’s data.” That statement concerns the companion Crop Production data process, rather than a separate WASDE forecast.

WASDE does not tell an individual consumer what food prices will be, and the cited figures do not establish a specific effect on grocery bills or investment returns. Its estimates are inputs to decisions across agricultural markets. USDA’s Economic Research Service provides one concrete downstream example: its farm-income forecasts rely on WASDE production and price projections, and its September 3, 2026 forecast used the August 12 WASDE. As of October 8, 2026, USDA lists its October WASDE for October 9 at 12:00 p.m. ET. For a useful comparison, note whether estimates change from August, what the report attributes those changes to, and how supply revisions compare with domestic use, exports, and ending stocks.
