Before paying for a used iPhone, make sure it can be activated, works with your carrier, and is in the condition the seller described. Treat Activation Lock as a deal-breaker: if setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, stop until the seller removes the lock. Then check the return terms, battery information, repair history, physical condition, and core functions.
Use this checklist before you pay
- Check the seller and return policy. Understand the return window, what qualifies for a return, and how the process works. If the seller advertises certification, ask what it covers and which components are inspected. For an online purchase, inspect the phone as soon as it arrives and act promptly if its condition differs from the listing.
- Confirm Activation Lock is off. The iPhone should be erased and removed from the previous owner’s account. If setup requests that owner’s Apple Account, do not complete the purchase until the seller resolves it. Apple’s instruction is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Apple explains how to buy a pre-owned iPhone; its Activation Lock guide explains that the lock ties the device to an Apple Account and requires that account’s password to turn off Find My, erase, or reactivate the phone.
- Inspect its physical condition and charging. Remove the case and accessories. Check the display, sides, back, and charging connector for damage or debris. Turn on the phone and confirm that it charges; Apple advises against buying one that will not charge.
- Review battery health. On supported models, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, or Battery Health & Charging on newer iOS versions. Read maximum capacity and any important battery messages. Apple says battery-health information may be unavailable for an unknown or non-genuine battery, so a missing or unreliable reading is not evidence that the battery is healthy. Apple’s buying guide does not set a universal capacity cutoff; weigh the displayed information against the phone’s price and any likely replacement expense.
- Check the repair record. On iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History, if the model and repair support it. Apple defines the labels and their limits in its Parts and Service History guide.
- Verify carrier status and compatibility. In Settings > General > About, “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked according to Apple. If a network provider appears, it is limited to that provider. Separately confirm that your intended carrier accepts that specific device; an unlocked status alone does not confirm carrier compatibility.
- Test the basic functions. Once the phone is unlocked and set up, try the volume and side buttons, take photos and video, check each additional camera lens if present, test the speaker, and record a short Voice Memos clip to check the microphone. Also check display brightness and connect to Wi-Fi if available.
What the repair-history labels mean
- Genuine: The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Unknown: The part may be non-genuine, may not be working as expected, or may have an incomplete or unverified repair.
- Unverified: This can describe a logic board that was previously used. Apple says an unverified logic board may affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Used: The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
Not every model reports the same components. Apple’s support information describes broader coverage for iPhone 12 and later, battery and display coverage for iPhone 11, and battery-only coverage for iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and SE (2nd and 3rd generation). Only the most recent service for a given part appears, so the record is useful evidence, not a complete lifetime repair ledger.

Buying online versus inspecting in person
If you are buying online
- Before ordering, confirm the exact model, storage, carrier status, condition, return terms, and any repair or battery disclosures in the listing.
- Ask what a seller’s “certified” or “refurbished” label actually means. Do not assume it is Apple certification unless the seller provides evidence.
- Inspect the phone immediately when it arrives. Check that it matches the listing, then work through the activation, battery, repair-history, charging, and function checks while you can still use the seller’s return process.
If you are meeting the seller
- Ask the seller to erase the phone and remove it from their account so you can proceed through setup without being asked for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- Inspect the phone without its case and test charging, buttons, cameras, speaker, microphone, brightness, and Wi-Fi before paying.
- Check battery information, Parts and Service History where available, and carrier-lock status in Settings. Confirm carrier acceptance separately with your intended provider.
Compare listings by total risk, not just the asking price
For two or more candidates, compare the exact model and storage you need alongside seller reliability, return terms, physical condition, battery-reading reliability, repair labels, carrier status, and likely repair costs. A lower price may not be a better value if the phone cannot be activated, is incompatible with your carrier, or needs a repair soon. Apple’s guidance supports these inspection checks, but does not establish a current best model, a fair used price, or one battery-health threshold that suits every buyer. Seller warranties, consumer protections, carrier acceptance, and repair costs also depend on location and seller, so verify those terms for your purchase.
