Yes—if one West Australian entry had won the $150 million Powerball draw on 25 January 2024, its prize would have topped the $107 million single-entry record cited by Lotterywest at the time. That was a possibility reported ahead of the draw, not a report that a WA player won. The $150 million figure was the total jackpot, a different measure from the amount one entry received.
What the January 2024 headline meant
PerthNow published its preview on 25 January 2024, ahead of that evening’s $150 million Powerball draw. Lotterywest said a single Division One-winning entry from WA could surpass the Australian single-entry record of $107 million, won in January 2019. The claim was conditional: it described what could happen if one entry won the jackpot, not a confirmed result. Lotterywest’s preview and PerthNow’s dated story provide the contemporaneous framing.
Why $150 million was not necessarily the biggest jackpot
The headline compared a potential single-entry prize with a record amount won by one entry. It did not establish a record for Australia’s largest total lottery jackpot. Lotterywest had reported a $160 million Powerball jackpot in October 2022, shared among three winning entries; one was a Western Australian syndicate. The total jackpot was larger than $150 million, but it was divided across entries. Lotterywest’s October 2022 report described it as the largest Australian Lotto jackpot at that time.
| Claim | Amount and date | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Single-entry record cited in the January 2024 preview | $107 million, January 2019 | One entry’s win, as described by Lotterywest in 2024. |
| Powerball jackpot in the January 2024 preview | $150 million, draw scheduled for 25 January 2024 | Total jackpot; a single winning entry could have exceeded the cited $107 million record. |
| Earlier Australian Powerball jackpot record | $160 million, October 2022 | Total jackpot shared among three winning entries. |
| Earlier $150 million jackpot | $150 million, September 2019 | Three winners received $50 million each. |
Lotterywest reported the September 2019 division as $50 million per winner. That illustrates why a total jackpot and a single winner’s share should not be treated as interchangeable records. Lotterywest’s September 2019 report gives the split.

What was the WA prize record?
In its January 2024 preview, Lotterywest put WA’s prize record at $80 million. It said a group of 55 gym members won the entire Powerball jackpot in 2021. The acting CEO, Jeremy Hubble, said: “If WA celebrates a single Division One win in tonight’s draw it will almost double the State’s current prize record of $80 million, which was set in 2021 when a group of 55 gym ladies took home the entire Powerball jackpot.” The conditional matters: he was describing a possible outcome of the upcoming draw, not announcing a winner. The release also recorded Lotterywest’s estimate that close to half of Australian adults would enter that night; this was an expectation, not a measured result.
Did a WA player win the $150 million?
The January preview alone does not say that a WA entry won that evening’s draw. A separate $150 million Powerball draw in May 2024 was won by a South Australian resident, while two WA entries won Division Two prizes. Those are distinct draws, and the May result was not a WA win of the full Division One jackpot. Lotterywest’s May 2024 report identifies the winner’s state and the WA Division Two results.

Other figures in Lotterywest’s 2024 preview
Lotterywest’s release also summarised 2023 as a year in which 20 Powerball Division One winning entries shared more than $552.15 million. That is a count of winning entries and their combined prizes, not a single-winner record. The same release contains the figure.
