Wigan Athletic’s owners said in March 2026 that they were exploring additional investment and would consider a full sale if the right party offered the right commitment to the club and town. The announcement did not disclose a funding shortfall, debt figure or loss, and it did not confirm that a sale had been agreed.
What did Wigan Athletic announce?
On 11 March 2026, the ownership group said the Danson family had decided earlier in the year to explore options for bringing additional investment into the club to support its long-term ambitions. The statement also said the family remained involved in the club’s day-to-day running. It said a change would depend on the owners being satisfied that new investment or ownership was in Wigan Athletic’s best interests. BBC Sport reproduced the statement.
The next day, BBC Sport reported that the options included a full sale if an appropriate party came forward with the right commitment to Wigan Athletic and the town. That describes openness to a possible sale, not confirmation that the club was sold or that a transaction had reached a particular stage.
Does the announcement mean the club is in financial trouble?
Not on its own. The owners described a search for additional investment, but neither their statement nor the BBC report quantified a current funding requirement, debt total, cash shortfall or loss linked to the announcement. The move may reflect a desire to fund long-term ambitions; the public announcement does not establish a specific financial emergency.

Historical difficulties are relevant context, but they do not prove the club’s present financial condition. BBC Sport reported that Wigan entered administration in 2020, that HMRC had served a winding-up petition before Mike Danson’s 2023 takeover, and that the club received an eight-point deduction for breaches of EFL financial rules for the 2023-24 season. The EFL’s March 2023 statement and May 2023 statement document disciplinary action relating to salary-payment and wage-bill deposit requirements. Those are past events, not a current financial statement.
