On May 13, 2024, Alaska Airlines named Shane Jones senior vice president of fleet, revenue products, and real estate, while Horizon Air named Nathan Engel vice president of maintenance and engineering. The appointments put Jones in charge of a portfolio connecting commercial growth with aircraft and customer-experience investments, and Engel in charge of Horizon’s maintenance and engineering organization.
Who was appointed, and to which airline?
| Executive | Airline | Announced role | Primary focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shane Jones | Alaska Airlines | Senior vice president of fleet, revenue products, and real estate | Fleet strategy, aircraft development, revenue products, and real estate |
| Nathan Engel | Horizon Air | Vice president of maintenance and engineering | Maintenance and engineering operations |
The appointments were reported by Investing.com on May 13, 2024, in an account it said was based on an Alaska Air Group press release. The underlying release was not independently reviewed for this account, so the descriptions below are attributed to Investing.com.
What was Shane Jones’s new role?
Jones’s expanded Alaska Airlines portfolio brought together fleet, revenue products, and real estate. Investing.com reported that he joined the airline in 2018 and had managed a $3 billion hub-airport investment strategy. In the new position, he was to oversee development of mainline and regional aircraft and the airline’s overall fleet strategy, including work with aircraft manufacturers and lessors on safety, quality, and sustainability.
The report said Jones would report to Alaska’s chief commercial officer, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the chief financial officer. It also reproduced a statement attributed to CEO Ben Minicucci: “This is an important role that will help connect our commercial growth strategy with our investments in aircraft and customer experience enhancements.” That wording comes from the secondary account rather than an independently reviewed company release.

What was Nathan Engel’s new role?
Engel was named Horizon Air’s vice president of maintenance and engineering. According to Investing.com, he was described as a 36-year industry veteran who would lead a maintenance and engineering workgroup of more than 300 professionals.
The report said Engel had held senior roles at Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, Amazon, and Hawaiian Airlines, and had served in the U.S. Air Force. It also attributed a comment to Horizon Air president Jason Berry praising Engel’s expertise and leadership as important to the airline’s focus on safety and operational performance; the report did not provide a verbatim sentence for that comment.

How do the appointments differ?
Jones’s position was a broad fleet and commercial-investment portfolio at Alaska Airlines. Engel’s was a functional leadership role overseeing maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air. They were distinct appointments at separate airlines, not equivalent posts within a single operating team.
The 2024 coverage also provided airline scale figures—43 Embraer 175 aircraft and service to approximately 50 West Coast cities for Horizon, and more than 120 destinations across North and Central America for Alaska and regional partners. Those figures describe the report’s 2024 context and should not be read as current fleet or route data.
