Wigan Athletic’s ownership group said it was exploring additional investment and would consider a full sale if the right party came forward with a commitment to the club and town. The statement followed Ryan Lowe’s dismissal, but it did not say the investment search was prompted by his departure.
What Wigan Athletic’s owners said
In a statement dated 11 March 2026 and reported by BBC Sport the following day, the ownership group said the Danson family had decided earlier that year to explore ways to bring additional investment into the club. It described the move as an ownership decision, rather than a decision by the wider board, and said a full sale was one possible option if a suitable party came forward.

The group said the family remained involved in the club’s day-to-day running and that any investment or ownership change would have to serve Wigan Athletic’s interests. As quoted by the BBC, the group said: “What we can say clearly is this: we will not hand this club to anyone who does not share our commitment to its stability, its community role, and its future.” BBC Sport’s report of the ownership statement also described Wigan as 20th in League One at the time; that was a dated snapshot, not a current position.
How the statement relates to Ryan Lowe’s dismissal
The sequence is clear, but the sources do not establish a cause-and-effect link between the manager’s departure and the owners’ investment plans.

- 29 January 2026: Sporting director Gregor Rioch said Lowe had the club’s “full backing” while acknowledging Wigan were underperforming, according to BBC Sport’s report.
- 7 February 2026: Wigan dismissed Lowe after 11 months in charge, following a 6–1 defeat at Peterborough United. The BBC reported that the result put Wigan in the League One relegation zone and that the club had won once in its previous 10 league matches. The chronology supports saying the ownership statement came after Lowe was dismissed. It does not support saying his dismissal triggered the investment exploration: the statement did not make that connection.
What Lowe said later about his time at Wigan
In an interview published on 2 October 2026, Lowe described the Wigan job as “a tough gig,” citing budget constraints and competition for players. He also said results were not good enough and accepted there were things he could have done better. The owners left open the possibility of a full sale, but the statement described exploring investment options, not a completed sale or a confirmed offer. The available reporting identifies no competing bids or agreed transaction. A possible sale should therefore not be presented as a deal in progress.
