What Was ZeroStack? The 2015 Private-Cloud Platform Explained

ZeroStack’s 2015 launch paired OpenStack-based private-cloud software with ZS1000 hyper-converged infrastructure and SaaS management. Its 15-minute deployment figure was a company claim, not an independent test.

ZeroStack was a private-cloud company that emerged from stealth in August 2015 with a promise to make on-premises cloud infrastructure simpler to deploy and manage. Its platform paired OpenStack-based software with the company’s ZS1000 hyper-converged system and a cloud management service. CEO Ajay Gulati said a self-service cloud could be deployed in “literally 15 minutes”—a company claim, not an independently verified result.

What was ZeroStack?

ZeroStack set out to package the components of a private cloud—compute, storage, networking and management—into an integrated system that enterprises could use without building and operating every layer themselves. It combined infrastructure deployed on the customer’s premises with a software-as-a-service management platform.

The company emerged from stealth in August 2015. Co-founders Ajay Gulati, CEO, and Kiran Bondalapati, CTO, said they had begun customer deployments in June. At the time of its launch, ZeroStack announced a $5.6 million Series A led by Foundation Capital.

How was it meant to simplify private cloud?

A private cloud can keep infrastructure under an organization’s control, including where it is placed behind the firewall. But assembling and operating a private-cloud environment can require specialist skills and coordination across hardware and software. Public cloud can reduce that operational burden, while giving customers less control over the underlying infrastructure and, in Gulati’s framing, less predictable performance.

ZeroStack’s pitch was to retain the control of an on-premises environment while offering a more convenient, self-service way to consume it. Its management service covered monitoring, troubleshooting, capacity planning and chargeback. Those functions were intended to help teams manage infrastructure and allocate or account for its use without stitching together separate tools themselves.

What were the ZS1000 and the software stack?

ZS1000 infrastructure

The ZS1000 was ZeroStack’s hyper-converged infrastructure system: the physical infrastructure component of the offering. The launch description presented it as working with ZeroStack’s software platform, which combined compute, storage, networking and management.

OpenStack foundation

Yes. ZeroStack described its cloud platform as built on OpenStack. The product was therefore not simply an OpenStack software download: the launch offering paired OpenStack-based software with the ZS1000 and the SaaS management layer.

How fast could ZeroStack deploy a private cloud?

Gulati claimed that ZeroStack could provide self-service cloud in “literally 15 minutes,” compared with the “three to six months” he said it could take to build a private cloud and integrate hardware and software using conventional approaches. Both figures were part of the company’s 2015 launch claim; no independent performance test or customer benchmark is established here. They should not be treated as a guaranteed deployment time for every environment.

Who was ZeroStack targeting?

The 2015 launch report described two main customer groups:

  • Technology companies with approximately 50–1,000 developers that wanted infrastructure for their teams.
  • Mid-to-large organizations in less technical sectors, including education, media, pharmaceuticals and retail, that might not have specialist cloud staff.

Foundation Capital called the concept “Private Cloud in a Box.” Its contemporaneous account said ZeroStack had released an alpha less than a year after funding and had beta customers and a waiting list when it emerged from stealth. These are early launch-era indicators, not evidence of later adoption or commercial performance.

What is known about ZeroStack today?

The available account describes the company’s 2015 launch, not its subsequent history. It does not establish ZeroStack’s corporate status, whether the ZS1000 or platform remains available, or current pricing. The product and deployment claims above should therefore be read as a description of what the company announced in 2015, not as a statement about a currently purchasable service.
