The coins are known as the Traveller Collection: a reported assemblage of roughly 15,000 pieces built by a European collector and his wife, hidden during the approach of World War II and recovered by the family decades later.
What was the Traveller Collection?
The Traveller Collection is a large, diverse numismatic collection—not a single cache of gold bullion. A 2026 account describes roughly 15,000 coins from more than 100 territories, including British coins, Persian Tomans and European royal issues. Those figures are reported approximations; no complete audited inventory is established in the available accounts. The Daily Galaxy’s 2026 report outlines the collection’s scope.
The collection is attributed to an anonymous European collector and his wife. Coverage says they assembled it after the 1929 Wall Street Crash, traveling through Europe and the Americas and keeping records of their acquisitions. A 2025 report describes the collection and its reported valuation.
Did it sell for $160 million?
No reported evidence establishes that the whole collection sold for $160 million. The 2025 coverage gives an estimate of more than US$100 million and presents approximately A$160 million as the converted equivalent. The Australian-dollar figure is therefore an estimate expressed in another currency, not verified auction proceeds or a completed whole-collection transaction.

Keep the distinction clear: the estimate concerns the collection as a whole, while auction results concern individual lots sold at particular auctions. A high price for one coin cannot be added to the headline estimate as though it were a confirmed total.
How was it reportedly hidden and recovered?
According to accounts of the family’s story, as Nazi forces advanced toward the country where the collector lived, he concealed much of the collection. Coins were reportedly packed in cigar boxes and other containers, placed inside metal boxes and buried. The collector died without retrieving them; his widow later told relatives where they were, and the family recovered and secured the coins. The available accounts present this as reported family history, not as a separately documented excavation record.

Coverage describes the coins as hidden for more than 50 years, but does not establish an exact burial or recovery date. The duration should be understood as a broad description rather than a precise timeline.
What does the 1629 100 ducat coin show?
A standout piece illustrates why the collection’s estimated value is not simply the value of its gold. Numismatica Ars Classica (NAC) records Ferdinand III’s 100 ducat coin, struck at the Prague mint in 1629, as realizing CHF 1,950,000 plus buyer’s premium at Auction 162 on November 6, 2025. That is the result for one coin, not a sale price or valuation for the Traveller Collection as a whole. NAC’s auction results provide the sale record.

For collectible coins, precious-metal content is only one consideration. Documented ownership and provenance, rarity, condition and historical context can also matter to collectors; these factors inform market judgments but do not create a simple pricing formula.

The collection has been entering the market through a staged NAC auction dispersal, rather than one sale of the entire group. A 2026 account says NAC gained access to the family’s largest holdings in 2022 and that its experts spent more than 15 months examining material that had not been fully catalogued.

The first cited sale was Auction 155, a British-coin auction held in Zurich on May 20, 2025. NAC’s results listing includes auctions in 2026, indicating that the dispersal continued in stages. A sale date or result for a particular lot should not be mistaken for a final accounting of the full collection. NAC’s results page lists its auction activity.
NAC’s Auction 162 catalogue states that its coins and medals, including the one struck prior to 1685, are guaranteed genuine. That is the auction house’s guarantee for material offered in that catalogue; it is not an independent appraisal of the entire Traveller Collection.
