A police official who had seen a handwritten document associated with Luigi Mangione told CNN that it included the phrase “these parasites had it coming” and an apology for “any strife and trauma,” followed by “but it had to be done.” That is what early reporting attributed to the document—not independent proof that every word in a full transcription later published online matched the recovered note.
What did the reported note say?
In a Dec. 9, 2024, CNN transcript, a police official who had seen the document was reported as saying it “rails against the health insurance industry and suggests that violence is the answer.” CNN’s account attributed two phrases to that official’s description: “these parasites had it coming” and “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.”
Contemporaneous coverage described the document as two pages and said it expressed ill will toward corporate America and criticized health insurance. In that CNN segment, it was not known whether the note specifically named UnitedHealthcare. The reported phrases are therefore evidence of what an official told a news outlet, not a complete, independently authenticated transcript.
Was the full text verified?
Journalist Ken Klippenstein later published what he presented as the full text. TMZ reported on Dec. 10 that law-enforcement sources had confirmed the text. Lead Stories, in a December 2024 fact-check, noted that Klippenstein’s publication did not provide proof of authenticity in its account. Those reports establish that the transcription circulated and that some coverage described source confirmation; they do not establish that every line was forensically matched to the handwritten document.

Lead Stories also distinguished Klippenstein’s text from a separate purported Substack post it identified as fake. The existence of that false post does not, by itself, authenticate or invalidate the separate transcription. Readers should keep the documents and the claims about them distinct.
What did the note say about UnitedHealthcare?
The early CNN report said it was not then known whether the handwritten document named UnitedHealthcare. The subsequently published online transcription included a reference to “United,” according to the coverage reviewed by Lead Stories. Because that reference comes from the purported full transcription, it should not be treated as confirmation that the recovered note itself named the company.

How to read the different reports
| Material | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Police official’s description, relayed by CNN on Dec. 9, 2024 | The official reportedly described a two-page document as critical of health insurance and attributed the quoted phrases to it. | An independently authenticated, word-for-word transcript. |
| Full text published by Ken Klippenstein and covered by TMZ and Lead Stories in December 2024 | A purported transcription circulated; TMZ reported that law-enforcement sources confirmed it. | That every word precisely matched the recovered note. Lead Stories noted that the publication did not provide proof of authenticity in its account. |
| Excerpts reported in connection with a Manhattan District Attorney filing in June 2025 | Later coverage discussed excerpts from other writings attributed to Mangione in a prosecution filing. | That those excerpts were part of the short December 2024 note, or that allegations in a filing are court findings. |
What did later court filings reveal?
In June 2025, The Independent reported that a Manhattan District Attorney filing included excerpts from other writings attributed to Mangione. These are a separate layer of material from the short handwritten note described in December 2024. They should be understood as material presented in a prosecution filing and reported by The Independent—not as proof that the excerpts appeared in the initial note or as findings made by a court.
The reporting summarized here does not establish the criminal case’s procedural status as of Oct. 8, 2026, so it cannot support a claim about a current trial outcome.
