EPCOS was formed in 1999 from Siemens Matsushita Components and other Siemens passive-component and electron-tube operations. It became a publicly listed company on October 15, 1999, while Siemens kept a minority stake. TDK acquired EPCOS in 2009, bringing it into a larger passive-components business.
What was EPCOS spun off from Siemens?
EPCOS was built from Siemens Matsushita Components, a Siemens–Matsushita joint venture established in 1989, together with additional Siemens passive-component and electron-tube activities. The reorganization into Epcos AG took effect on July 1, 1999.

The change was part of Siemens’ portfolio-optimization program: the mature component operations were separated from the wider group and given an independent corporate identity and shareholder base.
When did EPCOS go public, and what did Siemens retain?
EPCOS shares began trading on the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges on October 15, 1999. The public offering raised €767 million, according to a Siemens AG filing from 2002. Siemens’ 2000 annual report says the company retained 12.5% plus one share after the offering.

The dual-market listing gave investors access to shares in the newly independent business. On the first trading day, EPCOS president and chief executive Klaus Ziegler said, “Epcos is very excited about the high level of investor interest in its IPO.”
How large was EPCOS at its listing?
A contemporaneous 1999 EE Times report described EPCOS as Europe’s biggest passive electronic-component manufacturer, with about 9,000 employees operating across four continents. That figure describes the company around its listing, not its later or current workforce.

What products did EPCOS make?
EPCOS’s business centered on passive electronic components. TDK’s official history specifically records EPCOS production of aluminum electrolytic and film capacitors. The company’s origins also included electron-tube operations, but that heritage should not be mistaken for a statement about the range of products sold under the EPCOS name today.

TDK acquired EPCOS in 2009. Its acquisition plan combined EPCOS with TDK’s own passive-component businesses, shifting the story from Siemens’ portfolio separation to strategic consolidation in a larger components group.
| Period | Corporate position | Strategic context |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 | EPCOS listed independently; Siemens retained 12.5% plus one share. | Siemens’ portfolio optimization separated the component business from the group. |
| From 2009 | TDK acquired EPCOS and combined it with its passive-component operations. | The businesses were brought together within a larger passive-components specialist. |
These are distinct stages: EPCOS was not simply a Siemens division under another name after its listing, and its independent public-company phase preceded its acquisition by TDK.
