Minecraft is the best-selling individual video game, with 350 million units sold as of April 2025, according to Guinness World Records. Tetris can rank first if sales across its many distinct versions are added together, but that is a different way of counting.
How the answer depends on what counts as one game
A best-selling-games list can compare one title or release at a time, or add sales from many releases of the same game concept. Those methods produce different leaders, so a sales figure is meaningful only when its counting method is clear.

- Individual title or release: Count sales attributed to one game. On this basis, Guinness World Records identifies Minecraft as the best-selling videogame.
- Combined versions: Add sales from separate releases and platform versions of a game concept. Some rankings use this method for Tetris, making its cumulative total much larger than the sales attributed to the Game Boy release alone.
For context, HP’s list counts individual releases, listing Minecraft at 350 million and Tetris for Game Boy separately at 35 million. HP notes that some other sources combine Tetris versions. HP’s UK list of best-selling games describes its figures as the latest available in early 2025.
Minecraft sales: 350 million as of April 2025
Guinness World Records records Minecraft at 350,000,000 units sold in an entry dated April 2025. The record entry says Mojang confirmed the figure in the official Minecraft Annual 2026. The figure follows an earlier milestone announced by Mojang Studios in October 2023: more than 300 million copies sold. At the time, Mojang head Helen Chiang said: “As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks.” PC Gamer reported the announcement and quotation.
Why Tetris sometimes appears to be number one
Some lists report more than 520 million sales for Tetris by combining many versions. HP describes the approximately 520-million figure as an estimate across Tetris versions; GameSpot also reports a total above 520 million and attributes it to the official Tetris website. The official-page link on GameSpot’s article was unavailable when checked, and the publication date of the underlying official figure could not be established from the accessible passage. Treat it as a reported combined-version figure, not as a dated, independently comparable single-release total. HP explains the differing counts; GameSpot’s list reports the combined Tetris figure.

That cumulative Tetris figure does not contradict Minecraft’s record under the individual-title framing. It answers a different question: how many sales have accumulated across distinct Tetris releases, rather than how many units one individual game has sold.
Copies sold are not players or downloads
Sales rankings count copies or units sold, not the number of people who have played a game, installations, or activity across the broader franchise. Those measures can differ: for example, one person may play on more than one platform, while an installation or player count does not by itself establish a sale. Use the specific metric and date attached to a reported total rather than treating these measures as interchangeable.

Is Minecraft still the best-selling game in 2026?
The available sales record establishes Minecraft’s 350 million units as of April 2025, not a newer 2026 total. Minecraft continued to receive updates, but its official updates timeline does not provide a later sales figure.
