What did USDA report about corn and spring wheat?
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) report presents two different kinds of information: condition ratings and crop progress. Condition is growers’ assessment of a crop’s status; percentages such as silking, dough, headed, and harvested describe development or completion. They should not be read as interchangeable measures.

How to interpret “corn condition holds steady”
The 73% good-or-excellent figure describes the condition rating, not the share of corn that had reached a particular growth stage. The same report put corn silking at 88%, one percentage point below its five-year average, and dough at 42%, two points above its average. Dent was 6%, matching its average.

Those stage comparisons provide context for crop development, but they do not establish yield or final production. The headline phrase “holds steady” should be understood as a short-term characterization of the reported condition, not a guarantee that conditions or harvest outcomes would remain unchanged.
Why spring wheat was described as hitting a four-week low
Spring wheat’s good-or-excellent condition share was 48%, with 35% rated fair and 17% poor or very poor. The 48% reading followed four consecutive weekly declines, which is the basis for the “four-week low” framing in Agriculture.com’s August 5, 2025 report.

Progress measures also trailed their five-year averages: 95% of spring wheat was headed, compared with 98% on average, and 5% was harvested, compared with 9%. These figures indicate reported stage and harvest progress in the selected states. They do not, by themselves, establish the eventual crop size, yield, market price, or conditions across every wheat-producing area.

These are separate indicators: soybean and oat condition ratings do not measure harvest completion, while the winter wheat and oat harvest percentages track progress rather than crop quality.
