Music videos were part of a separate agreement between Spotify and Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), UMG’s publishing arm—not a confirmed feature rollout for every Spotify listener. The announcement came as UMG was pulling its music from TikTok during a licensing dispute, but that dispute was later resolved and both platform relationships have since had further developments.
What the March 2024 Spotify expansion included
Axios reported on March 28, 2024, that the expanded relationship would give UMG artists additional ways to promote new releases on Spotify. The report specifically identified song teasers and pre-save activity. A pre-save lets a listener signal interest in an upcoming release so it can be added to their library when it becomes available.

The music-video element had a different contractual basis: Axios said Spotify could feature music videos under a separate agreement with UMPG. That distinction matters because recorded-music licensing and music-publishing licensing are separate parts of the music business, and the report did not describe the video provision as simply another feature in the UMG artist-promotion arrangement. Axios’s March 28, 2024 report did not state financial terms, a rollout schedule, which artists would qualify, or which markets would receive the video feature.
Why the announcement was tied to TikTok
UMG’s Spotify expansion was announced amid its licensing dispute with TikTok. Axios reported that the prior TikTok contract had expired and UMG had begun pulling its artists’ songs from the platform in February 2024. The two platforms played different roles: TikTok is a short-form social-video service where music is used in creator content, while the Spotify announcement concerned streaming, artist promotion, pre-saves and a potential music-video catalog.

The dispute did not remain unresolved. On May 1, 2024, UMG announced a new licensing agreement with TikTok, saying it would return UMG’s recorded-music and publishing catalogs to the platform. UMG described cooperation on improved remuneration, promotional and engagement opportunities, e-commerce monetization, artist data and analytics, ticketing, online safety, attribution and protections related to generative AI. Those were announced areas of work, not evidence that each feature launched everywhere or produced measured results. UMG’s May 1, 2024 announcement framed the agreement as a new chapter in the relationship.
What changed after the 2024 announcements
Spotify and UMG: January 2025
On January 26, 2025, Spotify announced new multi-year agreements with UMG covering recorded music and music publishing. Spotify said the companies would collaborate on new and evolving offers, paid subscription tiers, music and non-music bundling, and a richer audio and visual catalog. The publishing agreement established a direct license between Spotify and UMPG across Spotify’s then-current product portfolio in the United States and several other countries. The announcement described the scope of agreements and areas of collaboration; it did not establish that every offer or catalog feature was available to every user or market. TikTok and UMG: May 2026
UMG announced another new multi-year strategic licensing agreement with TikTok on May 22, 2026. This later agreement confirms that the May 2024 restoration was not the final development in the companies’ relationship. UMG’s announcement establishes the agreement and its date; detailed terms are not established in the available announcement information. UMG’s May 22, 2026 announcement is the relevant update.

What listeners and artists can—and cannot—conclude
- Artist promotion: The March 2024 report named Spotify teasers and pre-saves as promotional tools for UMG artists.
- Music videos: Videos were associated with a separate Spotify–UMPG agreement. The report did not establish a universal launch date, eligible artists, markets or user access.
- TikTok catalog: UMG said its May 2024 agreement would return its recorded-music and publishing catalogs to TikTok, but the announcement alone does not prove the timing or availability of every track in every location.
- Later agreements: The January 2025 Spotify agreements and May 2026 TikTok agreement show that the companies’ licensing relationships continued to evolve; neither should be treated as proof that a particular 2024 feature is now available to a particular user.
