Uber sued DoorDash in San Francisco Superior Court on February 14, 2025, alleging that DoorDash used its restaurant-delivery app to pressure restaurants not to use Uber Direct for delivery orders placed through the restaurants’ own websites and apps. The complaint alleges threats involving higher fees, lower app visibility, exclusion, and lost promotions. Those claims have not been established as facts here, and Uber did not plead a federal antitrust cause of action.
What is Uber accusing DoorDash of?
The dispute centers on two ways a restaurant can offer delivery. A customer may order through DoorDash’s consumer-facing app, or order through the restaurant’s own branded app or website and have a delivery provider fulfill the order. Uber Direct is Uber’s delivery service for those restaurant-originated orders; this is commonly called first-party delivery. DoorDash’s app is a third-party marketplace that connects customers with restaurants.
Uber alleges DoorDash would not serve some restaurants on a co-preferred basis and threatened consequences if they used Uber Direct for first-party orders. The complaint says those consequences could include increased fees for DoorDash App orders, lower placement in DoorDash search results, removal or partial exclusion from the app, and exclusion from marketing or promotional programs. Uber alleges the pressure led restaurants to end or avoid arrangements with Uber.
These are allegations in Uber’s complaint, not court findings. The central factual questions include whether the threats were made, how they affected restaurant choices, and whether the challenged practices crossed legal lines rather than reflecting ordinary competition.

What are the parties’ competing explanations?
Uber’s position
Uber frames the alleged conduct as using DoorDash’s position in third-party delivery to influence which provider restaurants choose for orders made through their own channels. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s head of Delivery for the Americas, told the Daily Journal that restaurants had complained DoorDash’s tactics limited their freedom and punished them for seeking alternatives. That is Uber’s characterization of the dispute, not an established finding. Daily Journal report
DoorDash’s response
In a memorandum supporting its demurrer, dated April 25, 2025, DoorDash argued the case targets ordinary competition, including volume discounts and exclusive partnerships, and that Uber failed to state valid claims. The memorandum stated: “This lawsuit is not about protecting competition—it’s about Uber trying to avoid it.” That is DoorDash’s litigation position, not a judicial ruling. Did Uber sue DoorDash for antitrust violations?
Not in the sense of pleading a federal antitrust cause of action. Although Uber uses competition-related language in its complaint, it lists six California causes of action: tortious interference with contract; tortious interference with prospective economic advantage; violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law, Business and Professions Code section 17200 et seq.; violations of section 16600 et seq.; non-restitutionary disgorgement based on unjust enrichment or quasi-contract; and declaratory relief. Uber complaint
Legal commentators have noted the distinction between the complaint’s competition framing and the claims it actually pleads. Eric Goldman, associate dean for research and a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law, told the Daily Journal that the complaint “flirts with antitrust issues throughout but doesn’t allege any antitrust violations.” This is commentary, not a court determination. Uber seeks damages, disgorgement, preliminary and permanent injunctive relief, a constructive trust, a declaration, fees and costs, and a jury trial. These are requested remedies; the complaint does not establish that Uber will receive them. Uber complaint
