Twitter announced Blue for Business on December 19, 2022, as a limited pilot to help distinguish companies, brands and associated people from impersonators. Approved businesses received a gold checkmark and could link related accounts to their organization; those affiliates displayed a small badge with the company’s profile image. The pilot was not open to every business, and Twitter did not publish its price at launch. Its successor is X Premium Business, with published U.S. tiers and pricing.

What Twitter announced in December 2022

Twitter called the product “Twitter Blue for Business.” Its stated purpose was to help users identify businesses and the people and brands connected to them. The company introduced it as a pilot involving selected businesses, not as a subscription that every organization could immediately buy. TechCrunch’s December 19, 2022 report described the affiliation feature; its December 12 launch report covered the limited rollout.

The model paired an organization-level signal with a way to show that other accounts belonged to its network. A company’s official account received a gold checkmark. The company could affiliate related individuals, businesses and brands, whose profiles displayed a square badge containing the parent organization’s profile image.

What the badges meant

Gold checkmark: the organization

At launch, Twitter described the gold check as identifying an official business account through Blue for Business. X uses the gold checkmark for official organization accounts enrolled in Premium Business. It is a platform-recognized status, not an independent guarantee that the organization, its posts or its claims are trustworthy. Twitter’s archived support explanation and X’s profile-label documentation describe the signals.

Company-logo badge: an affiliated account

The small square badge beside an affiliated account’s verification indicator was intended to show a connection to the parent organization. In X’s current system, the badge can appear on profiles, posts, timelines, notifications, direct messages and search results; selecting it takes a user to the organization’s profile. The badge indicates association, not a person’s job title, authority to speak for the company or the accuracy of a particular post.

Blue and gray checks are different signals

In late 2022, a blue check could mean legacy verification or an active Twitter Blue subscription. A gold check identified a business account in the business program, while gray labels were used for government-related accounts. Today, X associates blue checks with X Premium or Premium+, gold checks with organizations in Premium Business, and gray checks with government or multilateral organizations or officials. These are distinct platform labels whose meanings and product names changed over time, not a single stable verification hierarchy. X’s current label definitions explain the present distinctions.

Square profile images for business accounts were also observed during the 2022 rollout. Contemporary coverage did not clearly establish that this presentation was a separately defined or universal entitlement of the pilot, so it should not be treated as a confirmed launch benefit.

How affiliations worked

  1. A business was admitted to or subscribed to the business program and established its organization account.

  2. The organization invited related accounts, such as employees, leadership, brands or support profiles.

  3. The invited account accepted the affiliation. Being an employee or associated account alone did not automatically produce a badge.

  4. Once linked, the account displayed the organization’s image badge, which let users navigate to the parent profile.

Current X documentation lists possible affiliates including employees, leadership, journalists, sports teams and players, customer-support representatives, recruiting teams, franchises, sub-brands, products, spokespeople and subsidiaries. These categories describe potential relationships, not automatic eligibility: an organization must invite an account and the account must accept. Depending on whether an affiliate is treated as an individual or an organization, its checkmark may be blue or gold. X Premium Business documentation explains the current process and account types.

Who could join, and what did it cost at launch?

The original program was a pilot for a limited number of selected businesses. Twitter said it expected to expand it, but did not publish a universal sign-up process, complete eligibility rules or a confirmed Blue for Business price at launch. Contemporary reporting also said the package’s other perks were unclear. The consumer Twitter Blue price from the December 2022 relaunch was a separate product and should not be mistaken for the business program’s price. TechCrunch’s launch coverage noted the unanswered pricing and access questions.

Why Twitter introduced it

Twitter presented the program as a way to make official accounts easier to recognize and reduce confusion caused by fake or untrustworthy accounts. For businesses, the practical uses included distinguishing a real support handle from an impersonator, connecting a spokesperson or employee to the organization, and helping users find the parent account from a brand or subsidiary. The program also arrived during Twitter’s broader shift toward paid verification; that commercial context helps explain the timing, but was not the only stated rationale. The archived support page records Twitter’s explanation of the gold business checkmark.

What replaced Blue for Business on X

The product is now called X Premium Business. The current service is more formalized than the 2022 pilot: organizations apply, and X reviews them before granting organization verification or affiliation-management functions. An account may receive some subscription benefits before approval, but that does not mean it has received the gold check or can manage affiliates. X says it can remove checks or affiliation badges for policy or account violations, and changes to account identity information may trigger review. Badges are therefore revocable, not permanent certifications. X’s Premium Business terms and feature page set out the current process.
