On March 21, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the F-47 designation for the Air Force’s crewed Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter and Boeing’s selection to develop it. The Air Force’s award is for engineering and manufacturing development—not evidence that the aircraft is already in operational service. The F-47 is one part of the broader NGAD family of systems, which also includes work on Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA).
What did Trump announce about the F-47?
Trump announced that the Air Force would proceed with the F-47 and Boeing as its development contractor on March 21, 2025. The Department of Defense and the Congressional Research Service describe the contract as an engineering and manufacturing development award. That marks a major development phase; it does not mean the F-47 has entered service or is ready for operational use. The Congressional Research Service’s program summary identifies the announcement and award.
The designation and Boeing selection were announced by the president, while the Air Force made the development award. The White House event page records the March 21 announcement.
How do F-47 and NGAD differ?
F-47 refers to the Air Force’s crewed NGAD fighter. NGAD also refers to a wider family-of-systems concept, rather than only a single aircraft. The Air Force intends the fighter to replace the F-22 Raptor. Its broader approach includes Collaborative Combat Aircraft, or CCA: uncrewed, semiautonomous aircraft being developed to accompany the NGAD fighter or other aircraft. CCA is not a named F-47 variant. CRS explains the fighter’s intended role and its relationship to CCA.

Boeing describes the NGAD platform as the central node in the family of systems, with capability goals that include range, survivability, lethality and adaptability. The company says further technical and programmatic details remain classified under U.S. national security and export laws. Boeing’s announcement states its description of the platform and the limits on public detail.
What is publicly known about the F-47’s capabilities?
The Air Force fact sheet, as summarized by CRS in its report updated July 22, 2025, gives a picture of planned capabilities—not independently verified results from an operational aircraft.

| Publicly reported item | What the figure means |
|---|---|
| Combat radius: more than 1,000 nautical miles | Planned figure in the Air Force fact sheet summarized by CRS; it is not an operational test result. |
| Speed: more than Mach 2 | Planned figure in the Air Force fact sheet summarized by CRS; it is not verified operational performance. |
| More than 185 aircraft | Planned fleet quantity reported by CRS, not a final purchase or delivered-aircraft count. |
| Stealth, survivability, lethality and adaptability | Capability areas identified in Boeing’s description; detailed specifications remain classified. |
CRS also cites a 590-nautical-mile range figure for the F-22. That is labeled as range, whereas the F-47’s reported figure is a planned combat radius. They are different measures, so comparing the numbers as if they were equivalent would be misleading. The public information cited here does not establish the F-47’s detailed refueling requirements or operational range.
Why was there work on NGAD demonstrators before the award?
Before the F-47 development award, Boeing and Lockheed Martin developed two NGAD risk-reduction X-planes under DARPA research and development contracts. DARPA says the demonstrators first flew in 2019 and 2022 and each logged several hundred hours. These were technology and risk-reduction demonstrators, not F-47 production aircraft; the cited flights do not establish that the F-47 itself has flown.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin described their role this way: “For the past five years, the X-planes for this aircraft have been quietly laying the foundation for the F-47 — flying hundreds of hours, testing cutting-edge concepts, and proving that we can push the envelope of technology with confidence.” The quotation is an attributed assessment of the demonstrator work, not an independent performance evaluation of the F-47. DARPA’s account of the X-planes gives the flight dates and context.
