What Trump Meant by “Kamala Crash” After the August 2024 Stock Market Slide

Trump used “Kamala Crash” to blame Harris for the August 5, 2024 market selloff. The label was political rhetoric; reported economic concerns do not prove she caused the decline.

“Kamala Crash” was Donald Trump’s political label for the sharp U.S. stock-market selloff on August 5, 2024—not an official name for a market event. Trump blamed then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris, but the contemporaneous reporting cited here describes economic concerns behind the slide and does not establish that Harris caused it.

What Trump said about the market slide

On August 5, 2024, Trump posted messages on Truth Social calling the market move a “massive market downturn” and warning of a “Great Depression of 2024.” In one post, he framed the election as a choice between “Trump prosperity” and “the Kamala Crash & Great Depression of 2024.” The archive lists posts at 9:26 a.m. and 9:59 a.m. as displayed. “Kamala Crash” was campaign rhetoric. It was not a market classification or a term showing that Harris was responsible for the selloff.

How sharply did stocks fall on August 5?

Forbes reported these intraday declines during the August 5 session. They are snapshots from that day, not closing returns:

Index Intraday decline reported by Forbes
Dow Jones Industrial Average 2.8%
S&P 500 4%
Nasdaq Composite 6.2%

At the time, Forbes said the S&P 500 and Dow were on pace for their steepest declines since September 2022, while the Nasdaq was on pace for its largest drop since March 2020. Those comparisons were also framed as the session unfolded, rather than as final closing results. Forbes’ contemporaneous report

What economic context was reported?

Contemporaneous coverage pointed to a weakening U.S. economic outlook, recession worries and a weaker-than-expected jobs report as context for the selloff. The New York Times’ coverage of the Harris campaign and economic concerns and Reuters’ reporting described that backdrop. The available reporting does not assign a precise share of the market decline to each factor.

Rank #2

That distinction matters: a political claim made during a market drop is not evidence that a candidate caused it. The cited accounts document Trump’s accusation and report economic concerns, but they do not establish that Harris’s candidacy produced the August 5 decline.

Trump’s later 1929-style crash warning

At a press conference in Bedminster, New Jersey, on August 15, 2024, Trump said: “And we’re going to have a crash like a 1929 crash if she gets in.” He referred to an unnamed analyst. This was Trump’s prediction, not a verified forecast or an independently established market outlook. August 15 press-conference transcript
