In May 2025, eight-year-old Liam LaFavers used his mother Holly’s phone and Amazon account to order about 70,000 Dum-Dums, an order that cost roughly $4,000. His mother said he wanted the lollipops as prizes for a carnival he planned to hold for friends. She later said she got her money back.
What happened?
The incident took place in Lexington, Kentucky. Holly LaFavers told ABC News that Liam had been allowed to use her phone and often browsed Amazon, adding themed items to a cart. She said he knew he was not supposed to place an order and that this was the first time he had done so. The reports do not describe the specific checkout steps that completed the purchase. The Associated Press and ABC News reported on the incident on May 6, 2025.
Why did he order so many lollipops?
LaFavers said Liam told her he wanted to host a carnival and hand out the candy as prizes. “He told me that he wanted to have a carnival, and he was ordering the Dum-Dums as prizes for his carnival,” she told the Associated Press.
How much did the order cost, and what was delivered?
The Associated Press described the order as costing about $4,000; ABC News reported LaFavers describing a $4,200 charge. The reports differ, so the safest summary is roughly $4,000. LaFavers told the Associated Press, “When I saw what the number was, I just about fainted.”
