What Trump Meant by “Don’t Be Stupid” and “Panican” During the April 2025 Market Turmoil

Trump’s “PANICAN” post appeared during tariff-related market turmoil on April 7, 2025, but the post does not establish that it caused market losses.

On April 7, 2025, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, “Don’t be Weak! Don’t be Stupid! Don’t be a PANICAN (A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!).” He wrote this while markets were unsettled by tariff developments, but the post itself does not show that he was referring to a particular index decline—or that his words caused market losses.

What did Trump say about the stock market?

Trump’s archived Truth Social post is dated April 7, 2025, at 8:59 a.m. EDT. The complete message reads: “The United States has a chance to do something that should have been done DECADES AGO. Don’t be Weak! Don’t be Stupid! Don’t be a PANICAN (A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!). Be Strong, Courageous, and Patient, and GREATNESS will be the result!” (archived post).

The post does not name a stock index, specify a market loss, or give investment instructions. The phrase “about the stock market crash” is therefore a way of describing its timing and context, not a direct quotation or a precise account of what the post says.

What did “PANICAN” mean?

Trump defined “PANICAN” in the post itself as “A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!” The wording presents it as a rhetorical label for people he characterized as weak or stupid. The post does not establish that “PANICAN” is an actual political party.

Why was the post associated with market turmoil?

The post appeared amid tariff-related market uncertainty. Contemporaneous reporting described confusion about tariffs and negotiations on April 7, including developments involving tariff policy and international discussions. That setting helps explain why the post was discussed in connection with markets; it does not turn the message into a formal market announcement. (Roll Call’s April 7 coverage; The Independent’s report on market swings amid tariff reports.)

Did Trump’s post cause the market selloff?

The available sources establish that the post and tariff-related market turmoil coincided; they do not establish that the post caused market movements. The message is not evidence by itself of why prices moved. A causal claim would require market data and analysis that separate the post’s effect from tariff news, negotiations, and other developments.

How did the White House later describe the message?

In a July 9, 2025 release, the White House quoted the same advice and presented it as part of the administration’s tariff agenda. The release’s economic claims are the administration’s own framing, not independent analysis demonstrating that the April post affected markets. (White House release.)
