NVIDIA, Oracle, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Argonne National Laboratory announced plans for two AI supercomputers at Argonne: Solstice, with 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, and Equinox, with 10,000. The figures describe announced configurations, not verified installed hardware or operating systems. DOE also said Oracle would provide researchers with immediate access to AI compute resources while the Argonne systems are being developed.
What are Solstice and Equinox?
They are two planned AI supercomputers that DOE, Argonne, NVIDIA and Oracle announced on October 28, 2025. Both are intended for Argonne National Laboratory, a DOE laboratory in Illinois. NVIDIA and Oracle are the named technology partners for the systems.

DOE described Solstice as the largest AI supercomputer in the DOE laboratory complex. That is a description of the announced plan; the releases do not report an independently verified installation or operational status.

How do the announced systems compare?
| System | Announced Blackwell GPU count | Schedule stated in the October 2025 announcements |
|---|---|---|
| Solstice | 100,000, according to NVIDIA’s October 28, 2025 announcement. | No delivery date stated in the reviewed announcements. |
| Equinox | 10,000, according to NVIDIA’s October 28, 2025 announcement. | DOE said delivery was expected in 2026; NVIDIA’s October 28, 2025 release specified the first half of 2026. These were forecasts, not confirmation of delivery. |
NVIDIA also announced 2,200 exaflops of combined AI performance for the interconnected systems. Its release does not specify a benchmark method or precision format, so this is a company-announced figure rather than a comparable, independently verified benchmark. The announcements do not establish relative measured speed or efficiency for Solstice and Equinox.

What will researchers use them for?
The stated goal is to support open-science research, including development of frontier and reasoning models and agentic AI workflows. The announcements also describe connecting AI systems with DOE scientific instruments and data resources. Argonne and DOE cite the Advanced Photon Source as one example of a facility in that environment; they do not describe a completed integration design.
NVIDIA’s announcement names Megatron-Core for model development and training and TensorRT for inference. The releases do not specify the systems’ full software deployment, GPU model mix, rack layout, power requirements or network topology.

What compute access is available before the systems arrive?
DOE said Oracle would immediately provide researchers with access to AI compute resources based on NVIDIA Hopper and Blackwell architectures. That is a separate near-term part of the partnership, distinct from the two planned Argonne supercomputers. The announcement does not provide allocation rules, eligibility details or a public application process for researchers.

The October 28, 2025 announcements establish the partnership, the planned Argonne location, the stated GPU counts, Equinox’s forecast schedule and the intended research uses. They do not establish project cost, measured system performance, final installed GPU counts, researcher access terms, or whether either system is operational now.

- Revell Plastic Model Airplane Kit #85-5512 is skill level 4 and contains 147 parts. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
- 1:48 scale model, Length 14-1/4", Wingspan 16.75"
- Crew figures and weighted tires. Machine guns mounted in glass nose.
- Decals included to build one of two variants from the 345th Bomb Group, the Air Apaches.
- Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.
Because the schedules were forecasts issued in October 2025, they should not be treated as current delivery confirmation. The reviewed announcements do not provide a dated operational update as of October 4, 2026.
Argonne also has other AI systems named Minerva, Janus and Tara. The lab describes those as separate systems developed through partnerships involving NVIDIA, HPE and/or World Wide Technology; they are not alternate names for Solstice or Equinox.
