Use the “Additional Information” section to supply relevant evidence that your application does not already cover. First read the employer’s full prompt: the field may be optional and open-ended, or it may be a required stage with specific questions and a deadline. If it is optional and you have nothing useful to add, leaving it blank may be appropriate when the form permits it.
Start by checking what the form actually asks
The label alone does not tell you what to write or whether you must write anything. Read the full prompt, any instructions beside the field, and the application guidance. Pay attention to whether the section is optional, whether it contains required questions, and whether it sets a word limit, response format, or deadline.
Optional, open-ended supplementary field
Some employers use this as a place for relevant information that is missing elsewhere. Imperial College London gives applicants this prompt: “Please write here any additional information, not covered elsewhere, which will strengthen your application.” The university suggests relevant achievements or difficulties overcome as possible material, and says to write “not applicable” if there is nothing to add, subject to the form’s instructions. Required section with set questions
In other applications, “Additional Information” names a formal stage rather than a spare text box. For certain schemes, the Civil Service Fast Stream stage can include motivational questions and academic details; applicants must complete all questions to continue. Follow the stated requirements rather than treating this kind of section as optional. Civil Service Careers’ Fast Stream additional-information stage guidance

Choose evidence that strengthens your application
Use the job description or person specification to identify a requirement that matters, then give a truthful example showing how you meet it. The University of Manchester advises applicants to make it easy for reviewers to see which criteria their evidence addresses, and to offer an example rather than simply claiming a skill. Its guidance recommends keeping examples to a few sentences. University of Manchester application hints and tips
Potential additions include role-related certifications or training, technical or language skills, a relevant achievement, volunteering, published work, or a portfolio reference. These are options, not a checklist: include one only if it helps demonstrate your fit and is not already adequately covered elsewhere. Indeed UK’s additional-information examples

Know when to leave the box blank
If the field is optional, open-ended, and you have no relevant information to add, leaving it blank can be reasonable if the form allows it. Some guidance recommends entering “not applicable,” while other forms may permit an empty response; the employer’s instructions decide which is correct. Do not leave a required question unanswered, and do not enter filler just to make the section look complete.

What to avoid
-
Repeating your CV or earlier answers without adding evidence or context.
-
Listing hobbies, skills, or achievements that have no clear connection to the vacancy.
-
Making generic claims, such as calling yourself a strong communicator, without a concrete example.
-
Ignoring a required question, word limit, response format, or deadline.
