Those details can change the amount you pay and whether the new store works for your household.
Compare the same basket at both stores
Use a representative weekly shop and match quantities as closely as possible. Include the prices you would actually receive after signing in, adding eligible digital coupons and applying any member-only offers. A headline discount or low advertised price is not a reliable comparison if it applies only to selected items or requires a reward you would not use.

For online orders, distinguish the displayed subtotal from the final charge. Kroger says its pickup and delivery order total is an estimate; the final amount can change with applicable discounts, promotions, coupons, substitutions, service fees and taxes. - Compare the same brands and quantities where possible; note when one store’s available size differs.
- Check member prices and digital coupons after logging in, rather than relying on a public listing.
- Account for weighted goods, substitutions, fees, taxes and any minimum order requirement shown at checkout.
- Repeat the comparison for a typical order, not a promotional basket designed around one-time deals.
Decide whether the loyalty program fits your spending
Write down the rewards you would genuinely use—such as lower prices, fuel rewards, points or grocery credits—and check how they are earned and redeemed. Look for exclusions, expiration rules, minimums and limits on qualifying purchases. A published earn rate is not the same as a discount on every item.

Kroger’s rewards terms say eligible purchases can earn points when linked to a Rewards Number or Alt ID, including eligible online orders, but exclusions and redemption rules apply. Review Kroger’s rewards program terms before assigning a dollar value to points. For any store, also confirm whether you must enter an account number, use an app, or activate coupons before shopping.
Compare pickup with delivery—and check who fulfills delivery
Pickup and delivery are different services with different costs and practical trade-offs. Pickup may avoid a delivery charge, but you still need a suitable collection window and a way to transport the order. Delivery saves the trip, but the total can include delivery and service fees, a tip, and other charges. Whether the store or a third-party platform handles the order can also affect prices, promotions and rewards.

Kroger says its delivery fees depend on service type, time slot and Boost membership status, and that delivery is available only in select markets. It also uses third-party services, including Instacart and Shipt. Its terms distinguish its own delivery orders from third-party delivery orders when describing coupon eligibility. Check Kroger’s delivery information and the terms for the specific service you plan to use.
Fees on a marketplace order are not necessarily limited to delivery. Instacart says eligible Instacart+ orders may have a waived delivery fee, but service fees can still apply and vary. Pickup generally has no Instacart service fee, though a retailer may charge its own pickup fee. Location, retailer and order affect fees and taxes; see Instacart’s fee information.

Check substitutions and the handoff
Decide what should happen if an item is unavailable. If you would rather skip an item than accept a replacement, check whether the service lets you reject substitutions or specify preferences. Kroger’s terms describe setting whether substitutions are acceptable; they also explain that customers can reject a pickup substitute or seek help with an unwanted delivery substitution. Read the order terms and check the options in the ordering flow before placing a first order.
Consider the handoff as part of the store choice: confirm where pickup takes place, whether someone must be present for delivery, and how to report missing, damaged or unsuitable items. These details can matter more than a small difference in the advertised basket price.

Verify local availability, payment and membership terms
Do not assume a service listed nationally is available at your address or preferred store. Check the store or service with your exact address, then look for a realistic window and a representative cart. Target describes free Order Pickup, Drive Up and same-day delivery for groceries and other goods, but local availability must be checked. Its service page also lists Circle 360 membership and per-order delivery options; confirm current prices and terms at checkout. See Target’s pickup and delivery information.
Check payment rules before switching if you rely on a benefit or a particular payment method. Kroger says SNAP EBT is accepted for pickup at its pickup locations, subject to stated exceptions, and that WIC is not currently accepted there. Rules can depend on location and service, so verify them with the exact store and order type using Kroger’s current delivery and pickup information.

Memberships deserve a separate calculation. Estimate how many qualifying orders you would place in an ordinary month, then compare the membership cost with fees you would otherwise pay and benefits you would actually redeem. Do not count a waived delivery fee as total savings if service fees or other charges remain. Target’s 2025 annual report describes its free Target Circle offering, Target Circle Card benefits and paid Circle 360 membership as parts of its loyalty and fulfillment model; it is background, not a substitute for current local checkout terms. Make the switch with a low-risk trial
- Choose a typical basket and compare logged-in prices and available coupons at both stores.
- Check pickup and delivery options using your address; note the actual checkout fees, windows and minimums.
- Review reward eligibility, redemption conditions, substitution settings and payment acceptance for the service you will use.
- Place one ordinary order before changing your routine. Compare the final receipt with the estimate and note whether the handoff and item quality worked for your household.
The cited examples illustrate why terms matter; they do not establish that Kroger, Target, or any delivery platform is cheapest or best in every market. Local prices, availability and offers can differ and change.
