Before buying a quantum-computing stock, compare the company’s recognized revenue, customer use, technical results, cash needs and share dilution—not just its qubit count or roadmap. These issuers are at different stages, and company-reported milestones do not by themselves prove that a system can scale, deliver fault-tolerant computing or generate profits. Treat the shares as speculative, read current SEC filings and verify each listing and share count before making a decision.

What does “quantum-computing stock” tell you?

It identifies a company’s connection to quantum computing, not a common business model or a comparable level of maturity. An issuer may report technical progress, offer customer access, book projects or recognize revenue; those are different kinds of evidence. A prototype, pilot or cloud-access offering is not the same as repeat paid deployments or profitable production use.

Nor does a high qubit count establish useful computing performance. The architecture, error rates, operating conditions, test methodology and ability to scale all matter. A reported technical result may be company-tested rather than independently reproduced, and even a strong component metric is not proof of commercial advantage or a fault-tolerant system.

What do the cited public-company filings show?

The figures below come from specific company filings and periods. They are historical disclosures, not live market data or a current comparison of stock value.

Issuer and filing context Reported evidence What the evidence does not establish
D-Wave Quantum Inc.; 2025 annual report, published in 2026 D-Wave reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $24.6 million, up 179% year over year, and $884.5 million in cash and marketable securities at December 31, 2025. 2025 annual report The annual revenue growth does not guarantee future growth. The year-end cash balance is not a current balance or a cash-runway calculation. Claims of industry leadership or commercial significance in the report are company assertions, not independent verification.
IonQ, Inc.; 2025 Form 10-K and 2026 prospectus supplement IonQ reported a 2025 net loss attributable to IonQ of $510.4 million in its August 2026 prospectus supplement. Its 2025 Form 10-K says it had not produced a scalable quantum computer as of that filing. The annual loss is not a current quarterly loss measure or a stand-alone valuation measure. IonQ describes itself as early-stage and warns of continuing losses, scaling challenges and uncertainty in market estimates and forecasts.
Rigetti Computing, Inc.; June 2026 Form 10-Q Rigetti reported a deployed 108-qubit system, median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.1%, gate speed of approximately 60 nanoseconds and median single-gate fidelity of 99.9%. The fidelity figures are based on internal testing. June 2026 Form 10-Q These reported specifications are not proof of fault tolerance, commercial advantage or independently reproduced performance. The company’s filings discuss a limited operating history and past roadmap or milestone changes; review its 2025 Form 10-K for competition and business risks.
Quantum Computing Inc.; June 2026 filing The filing reports operating losses of $632.2 million for the six months ended June 30, 2026, and $199.3 million for the year ended December 31, 2025. June 2026 SEC filing These are operating-loss figures for different periods, not net-loss figures, and should not be compared as if they were the same reporting interval. The filing calls the investment highly speculative and ties commercialization to developing and producing systems at scale and providing customer access.

Listing details can change. D-Wave’s June 2026 filing says it transferred its listing from the NYSE to Nasdaq in July 2026 and retained ticker QBTS. IonQ’s cited August 2026 prospectus identifies it as NYSE: IONQ. The sources cited here do not assert a Rigetti ticker or establish Quantum Computing Inc.’s current listing details; check an exchange and the issuer’s latest filing before trading. How should you judge commercial traction?

Start with recognized revenue in audited financial statements, then work backward to what generated it. A company may describe bookings, backlog, pilots, cloud access or customer projects, but none should be treated as equivalent to recognized revenue or repeat production use.

  • Check whether customer work is paid, whether it is a pilot or an operational deployment, and whether the customer has returned for additional work.
  • Look for customer concentration and the share of revenue that recurs. A small number of projects can make reported growth volatile.
  • Compare management’s commercial claims with reported revenue and the company’s description of how revenue is recognized.
  • Distinguish the company’s own characterization of commercial significance from independently verified adoption. The cited filings do not provide a neutral, comparable measure of commercial success across issuers.

How should you assess technical milestones?

Trace each headline metric to a dated filing or technical release. Record what was measured, on which system, under what conditions and according to whose test. A fidelity percentage, gate speed or qubit count describes only part of a system; it does not alone answer whether errors can be corrected at scale or whether a useful workload is faster, cheaper or more reliable than a classical alternative.

Ask whether the result was internal testing, an independent reproduction, a prototype demonstration, deployed customer access or production use. Then compare the stated result with later filings and the company’s prior milestones. Company disclosures reviewed here do not establish a sector-wide success rate or a neutral, comparable date for when fault-tolerant quantum computers will become commercially viable.

What financial risks should you check?

Technical development can require substantial spending before a business produces durable revenue. Review operating losses and cash used in operations alongside cash and marketable securities, debt, contractual commitments and plans to raise capital. A large balance at one reporting date does not establish runway without considering spending and obligations.

  • Read the cash-flow statement as well as the income statement; losses and cash consumption are related but not interchangeable.
  • Check current shares outstanding, equity compensation, warrants or other potential share issuance, and any announced financing. Additional shares can dilute existing holders.
  • Compare funding needs with the company’s available resources and its stated plans, while avoiding a runway estimate unless the assumptions and period are clear.
  • Do not infer that an annual loss is a current run rate. Keep the reporting period and measure—operating loss or net loss—attached to every figure.

Why can a promising roadmap still disappoint?

Management targets and market-size estimates are uncertain. Milestones may slip, scaling or manufacturing may prove difficult, a product may not meet customer needs, and expected demand may not develop. Competition can also change the economics of a proposed use case. IonQ’s 2025 Form 10-K warns that it had not produced a scalable quantum computer and faced significant barriers in trying to do so. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K says quantum advantage or large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing may never be achieved.

Past guidance is useful evidence about execution. Compare older milestone dates and assumptions with later filings, and note whether management has revised its roadmap or market forecasts. Do not assume that a technical milestone automatically converts into sales, margins or shareholder returns.

How should you assess valuation and ownership?

A company’s technology story does not say whether its shares are attractively priced. Before comparing issuers, check the current share price, market capitalization, enterprise value and fully diluted share count, then ask what revenue growth, future margins and technical outcomes the valuation appears to require. Market prices and capital structures can change quickly; verify them at the time you make a decision.

The filings cited here do not establish a current comparative valuation, so they cannot support a “best value” ranking. A large cash balance, fast revenue growth or a notable technical specification should not be used alone as a substitute for valuation analysis.

Filing checklist before making a decision

  1. Open the issuer’s latest Form 10-K and Form 10-Q on SEC EDGAR. Read the risk factors, management’s discussion and analysis, audited financial statements, share-count disclosures, equity compensation and financing plans.
  2. For each technical milestone, find the dated filing or release and identify whether it was internally tested, independently verified, demonstrated on a prototype or deployed for customer use.
  3. Separate bookings, backlog, pilots, cloud access, paid customer work and recognized revenue. Check recurrence and customer concentration.
  4. Compare losses and operating cash use with cash, marketable securities, debt and commitments. Look for financing needs and possible dilution.
  5. Compare prior management guidance with reported outcomes. Note changed milestone dates, assumptions, market forecasts or roadmaps.
  6. Immediately before acting, verify the ticker, exchange, current share count and valuation using current issuer filings and market data.

These disclosures are company-reported information, not individualized financial advice or a recommendation to buy or sell. IonQ’s filing warns that investors could lose all or part of their investment; quantum-computing securities should be approached with that possibility in mind.
