WeightWatchers’ December 10, 2024 update added app-based food tools, expanded ZeroPoint foods, nutrition summaries, and access to registered dietitians for eligible U.S. members. It was separate from the company’s October 2024 expansion of clinical weight-loss medication services—and both developments predate later changes to the company and its member experience.
What changed in the December 2024 update?
WeightWatchers announced five main additions to its Points program and app on December 10, 2024: insurance-covered dietitian access, an AI food scanner, a recipe importer, more ZeroPoint foods, and macronutrient information. These are features described by the company in its announcement.
One-on-one dietitian guidance
The company said U.S. members could connect virtually with a registered dietitian through the app. It described the service as potentially costing as little as $0 with qualifying insurance coverage. That is not a universal price: coverage and out-of-pocket cost depend on a member’s individual insurance plan.
AI food scanner and recipe importer
The scanner uses photo recognition to estimate a food’s ingredients, portions, and Points. The recipe importer calculates Points from the URL of an online recipe. WeightWatchers described these capabilities, but its announcement did not establish independent testing of their accuracy. Treat estimates as a convenience, not a guarantee that a portion or Points value is correct.

More ZeroPoint foods and nutrition information
The company said it added over 150 ZeroPoint foods, bringing the total to over 350. Listed examples included selected cuts of dark chicken and turkey, lean meats, oats, and starchy vegetables such as potatoes, plantains, and parsnips. WeightWatchers said ZeroPoint foods do not need to be tracked, weighed, or measured.
The update also added information on protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, and sodium. Those summaries give members more nutrition detail alongside Points tracking; the announcement does not mean those nutrients became additional tracked budgets.

What did the update mean for a member’s costs?
The most direct cost implication in the announcement was dietitian access through qualifying insurance. A member would need to check coverage and any applicable cost-sharing with their insurer; “as little as $0” does not mean every member receives the service free. The company did not announce a universal dietitian price in the release.
The announcement also said ZeroPoint foods require no tracking, weighing, or measuring. That rule does not remove the need to follow the program’s tracking approach for other foods, and the release did not specify that members need to buy equipment to use the update.

How should readers interpret WeightWatchers’ outcome claims?
WeightWatchers’ December 2024 announcement claimed “3.5x more weight loss” than standard nutritional guidance. That is a company claim, not an independently verified comparative result established by the announcement. The release also said the program had over 350 ZeroPoint foods overall; those counts are likewise figures reported by the company.
These statements do not, on their own, establish how a particular member will fare or provide a sound basis for comparing program effectiveness. The release does not turn the cited claims into a direct, independent comparison of WeightWatchers against other plans.

Was the October 2024 medication expansion part of the update?
No. On October 8, 2024, WeightWatchers separately announced that clinicians could prescribe compounded semaglutide to clinically eligible members. Its release said patients could also use insurance for brand-name medications or pay out of pocket for brand-name or compounded medicine; the clinical team determined eligibility. These were details of the 2024 offer, not features announced with the December Points and app update.
The October release said WeightWatchers’ virtual-clinic member data showed 11% more weight lost when members used the Points Program with a GLP-1 than with medication alone. The company described this as a comparison over the first four weeks of membership, based on an analysis completed in January 2024 that did not include compounded medications. It should not be read as a randomized-trial result or a long-term outcome. The release also reported almost 3 million pharmacy stock checks and 4.5% in-stock; those figures describe calls made on members’ behalf by the company, not a representative survey of pharmacies. The company’s October announcement is available here.

What happened after 2024?
The October medication announcement is not a guide to what WeightWatchers offers today. A later SEC filing says the clinic discontinued its compounded GLP-1 offering on May 22, 2025. WeightWatchers says it emerged from Chapter 11 on June 24, 2025; its member FAQ states that membership offerings, app access, and coaching were unchanged at the time of that page. Those 2025 developments are separate from the December 2024 program update.
In December 2025, the company described a redesigned member experience and a GLP-1 Success program with support such as dose and refill tracking, side-effect guidance, nutrition support, movement, coaching, and virtual groups. This later offering should not be confused with the app features announced in 2024. The company’s dated information appears in its SEC filing, member FAQ, and December 2025 article.
Quick Recap
What to check before relying on a feature
- Dietitian visits: Confirm with your insurer whether the service is covered and what you would pay.
- Food estimates: Review scanner and recipe-importer results rather than assuming image recognition or an online recipe calculation is exact.
- Medication care: Check current program information and clinical eligibility directly; the October 2024 offer does not establish present availability.
- Program fit: Consider the app tools, nutritional guidance, tracking rules, insurance conditions, and whether clinical care is included in the specific option you are considering.
