Netflix earns most of its revenue from monthly streaming memberships. It also sells advertising and reports revenue from consumer products, live experiences and other sources—but the company says those non-membership sources were not material to total revenue in 2023, 2024 or 2025. Its latest annual filing does not break out a dollar total for any of them.
How does Netflix make money besides subscriptions?
Netflix’s core business is paid streaming memberships. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company also identifies advertising, consumer products, live experiences and “various other sources” as revenue categories. The filing says revenue from sources other than monthly membership fees was not a material component of revenue in each of the three years ended December 31, 2025.

That distinction matters: Netflix names these additional sources, but does not publish comparable standalone totals for advertising, merchandise or live experiences in the filing. It is therefore not possible to determine from these disclosures which is the largest non-membership source. Netflix’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $45.183 billion in total revenue for fiscal 2025, up 16% from $39.001 billion in 2024.
Does Netflix make money from ads?
Yes. Netflix sells advertisements shown on its streaming service. The company cited increased advertising revenue as one of the factors behind 2025 revenue growth, alongside membership growth and price increases. It did not disclose a separate advertising revenue figure in its 2025 Form 10-K, so the filing does not show how much of total revenue came from ads.

Advertising is distinct from the fee paid by someone who subscribes to Netflix’s ad-supported plan. That plan is still a membership, while sales of ad placements are a separate revenue source.
How large is Netflix’s ad audience?
Netflix reported more than 190 million global Monthly Active Viewers (MAVs) on November 5, 2025. The company defines MAVs as members who watched at least one minute of ads during the month, multiplied by estimated average household viewers. This is an advertising-reach measure, not a count of paid memberships or individual subscribers. Netflix said it was adopting MAV as a more complete measure of the scale of its ad business in its November 2025 advertising update.

Earlier, on May 14, 2025, Netflix reported more than 94 million global monthly active users for its ad-supported plan in its 2025 Upfront announcement. That earlier figure describes a different metric and was reported on a different date; it should not be treated as directly comparable to the later 190 million MAV count.
What other non-subscription revenue does Netflix report?
Consumer products
Netflix identifies consumer products as a revenue source and says its intellectual property extends to products based on its content. This supports treating merchandise as one of the company’s additional business categories, but the annual filing does not name specific products or disclose merchandise sales. It also does not establish that consumer products are a material share of Netflix’s overall revenue.

Live experiences
Netflix also names live experiences as a revenue source and says it continues to expand them. The filing does not report a separate financial contribution or establish that every experience is a ticketed event, so neither should be assumed from the category alone.
Other sources
The 10-K refers broadly to “various other sources” without itemizing them in the cited discussion. The company’s disclosure does not support assigning separate revenue totals to licensing, games, partnerships or other activities based on that phrase.

Are bundles and distribution deals another major revenue stream?
Netflix describes arrangements in which electronics manufacturers, multichannel video distributors, mobile operators or internet service providers provide customers access to Netflix. The company says it is the principal in these relationships because it retains control over delivery of its service. If a partner sets a bundle price and there is no standalone Netflix price, Netflix recognizes the net amount it collects from that partner as revenue.
These arrangements explain how Netflix may distribute and account for memberships; the filing does not identify them as a separate major non-membership revenue category.

- Established: Membership fees are Netflix’s primary revenue source; the company also names advertising, consumer products, live experiences and other sources.
- Established: Netflix reported $45.183 billion in total fiscal 2025 revenue and 16% growth compared with 2024, and cited increased advertising revenue among several growth factors.
- Not disclosed separately: Dollar totals for advertising, consumer products and live experiences, or a ranking of those sources by size.
- Not established by the broad “other sources” wording: That any particular unitemized activity, such as licensing or games, is a distinct material revenue stream.
