Include a few truthful accomplishments that match the job you want and show what you did and what changed as a result. Use concise, direct wording, and quantify results only when you can support the figures. A separate section titled “Career Highlights” is optional: depending on the experience, the same material may fit better in a short summary or under a relevant job or project.
What belongs in career highlights?
Choose accomplishments that demonstrate skills and responsibilities emphasized in the target job description. A strong highlight shows more than a duty: it identifies your contribution and the outcome. Berkeley Career Engagement advises candidates to focus on outcomes and quantify results when possible; Harvard likewise recommends emphasizing the strongest assets relevant to the position.
- Relevant work: Connect the accomplishment to a qualification or responsibility the employer names.
- Your contribution: Make clear what you personally did, rather than implying that you led or completed work performed by a team.
- A credible result: State what changed, what was produced, or what was improved. Include a number only when it is accurate and you can explain its context.
For example, “Responsible for customer service” describes a duty but not an accomplishment. A more useful bullet would name the customer-service work you performed and the result you can substantiate. Do not add an invented percentage, dollar amount, or other metric to make a bullet sound more impressive.
How to write a clear accomplishment bullet
Use this practical pattern: action verb + relevant work or project + method or scope + accurate result. It is a drafting aid, not a requirement to force every bullet into the same sentence structure.

Build the bullet with P-A-R
Harvard’s graduate-student guidance describes P-A-R as Project, Action, Result: what the work was, what you did, and what came of it. Ask yourself three questions before writing:
- What project, responsibility, or problem did I take on?
- What action did I personally perform, and how?
- What changed or resulted, and what evidence supports that claim?
Use a strong verb and keep the answer factual and easy to scan. If the result is qualitative rather than numeric, describe it plainly; do not manufacture a number just to make the bullet appear measurable.

Where should the highlights go?
The best placement depends on how much context a reader needs to understand the achievement. A separate “Career Highlights” heading is one option, not a universal requirement established by the university career-service guidance cited here.

If the achievement makes sense only when attached to a particular role or project, keep it there. If several accomplishments together provide a useful snapshot of your fit, a short summary near the top may be clearer.

Check every claim before sending the resume
Harvard advises accuracy and notes that resume content may be discussed in an interview. Be ready to explain your specific role, how you know the result is accurate, and the context behind any figure. If you cannot defend a claim or metric, revise it or leave it out. Harvard’s concise standard for resume language is “Clear and direct, not embellished.”
