An old Mac is not automatically e-waste. If it still works, first compare its remaining usefulness and resale value with the effort of selling it. You can keep or repurpose it, sell it privately, trade it in through Apple, Gazelle, or Best Buy, donate it, or recycle it. The right choice depends on money, convenience, privacy, environmental impact, and the Mac’s hardware and software support.

Whatever you choose, back up your files, sign out of Apple services, disable Find My and Activation Lock, erase the Mac, and leave it at the macOS Setup Assistant before handing it over. Apple’s current preparation guidance is at Apple Support.

Identify the Mac before deciding what it is worth
Do not price or trade in a Mac based only on its appearance. Open Apple menu → About This Mac and record the information shown there. Menu labels can vary slightly by macOS release, so use the details displayed on your machine.

- Approximate model year
- Processor type: Apple silicon or Intel
- Chip or processor name
- Memory and storage capacity
- Screen size and resolution, where applicable
- macOS version
- MacBook battery condition and cycle information
- Serial number, kept private
- Included charger, cables, boxes, and other accessories
Test the display, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, camera, microphones, ports, Wi-Fi, charging, and any external-display connections. Note dents, dead pixels, screen marks, liquid damage, repairs, missing keys, and battery wear.

For a listing or quote, photograph the Mac powered on, its exterior from several angles, the screen, keyboard, trackpad, battery information, charger, and defects. Conceal the full serial number in public photos and listings.
Apple-silicon Macs generally retain more practical and resale value than older Intel models, but age alone does not determine value. Configuration, condition, local demand, accessories, and current software compatibility matter more than a generic “old Mac” label.
Should you keep, sell, donate, trade in, or recycle it?
Start with the use you can realistically get from the Mac. A machine that still meets your needs may be worth more to you than its resale price.

An older Mac can remain useful as a writing or school computer, household browsing machine, music or photo station, travel computer, television-connected media machine, printer or scanner workstation, home dashboard, local file-sharing device, or backup destination. It may also be useful for older software that no longer runs on a newer Mac.
That does not make it suitable for every task. If it no longer receives security updates or cannot run a supported browser, avoid recommending it for banking, business administration, medical records, or other sensitive, always-online activity. Check support for the applications you actually use, including browsers, video-conferencing tools, cloud-storage clients, and creative software.
Linux or another lightweight operating system may extend the life of some Intel Macs. Before replacing macOS, check Wi-Fi and other driver support, Secure Boot and firmware limitations, application requirements, recovery options, and whether you can live without Apple-specific features. Apple-silicon Macs have materially different installation and compatibility considerations and should not be treated as equivalent to Intel Macs.
Give it to family or donate it
Giving the Mac to a family member can be better than selling it when the recipient has modest needs and can use the available operating system and applications. Be prepared to provide setup help and include the correct charger.

Reuse generally preserves more of a device’s remaining utility than immediate recycling, but passing along an unsupported or unsafe computer is not automatically the better environmental choice. If nobody can use it reliably, recycling is appropriate.
Back up everything before erasing
Erasing permanently deletes the Mac’s files. Apple recommends backing up before erasing; see Apple’s erase and reset instructions.
Use a current backup
- Run a current Time Machine backup.
- Open the backup and verify that important documents are actually present.
- Check Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Photos, Music, project folders, and locally stored email.
- Preserve local virtual machines, developer projects, databases, media libraries, and other large working files.
- Export browser bookmarks if they are not synchronized.
- Confirm access to your password manager, email, cloud storage, and two-factor-authentication recovery codes.
- Check external drives and mounted volumes that may contain part of your workflow.
A practical minimum test is to open several important files from the backup, including a document, photo, project, and any specialized database or library you cannot recreate.

Move to another Mac
Use Migration Assistant or a Time Machine backup to transfer accounts, files, applications, and settings to the replacement Mac. Migration is separate from preparing the old Mac for another owner: after the transfer, the old computer still must be signed out and erased.
Understand iCloud correctly
Signing out of iCloud removes the Mac’s connection and may remove local copies; it does not mean you have deleted the corresponding data from iCloud. Deleting files from an iCloud-synchronized folder can delete them from iCloud and other devices. Check that your files have synchronized before removing anything, and distinguish between deleting cloud data, disabling synchronization, removing local copies, and removing the Mac from your Apple Account.
Remove accounts, locks, and management profiles
Apple Account, Find My, and Activation Lock
Before transfer, sign out of your Apple Account and disable Find My. Apple says that turning off Find My automatically removes Activation Lock; its instructions are available in the iCloud user guide.
On a working Mac, Erase All Content and Settings can sign you out of Apple services and turn off Find My and Activation Lock as part of the process. A disk erase by itself is not a reliable substitute for removing the Mac from your account.
Older services and accessories
On macOS Catalina 10.15 and later, Apple says the old iTunes deauthorization step can be skipped. On an older system that still has iTunes, open Account → Authorizations → Deauthorize This Computer.

Forget or remove paired keyboards, mice, and other Bluetooth accessories. Do not include personal accessories unless you intend to sell or donate them.
If AppleCare is active, check Apple’s region-specific terms to see whether it can be canceled or transferred. Do not promise transferability without confirming the applicable terms.
Company- and school-owned Macs
A work- or school-managed Mac may display a remote-management or organization-setup screen after erasure. Contact the administrator and have the device released from the organization’s management system before selling, donating, or giving it away. Erasing the disk does not necessarily remove enrollment from Apple Business Manager, Apple School Manager, or an MDM service.

Erase All Content and Settings is the preferred route when the Mac starts normally and meets both requirements:
- It has Apple silicon, or an Intel processor with the T2 Security Chip.
- It runs macOS Monterey 12 or later.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Apple menu.
- Open System Settings.
- Select General.
- Choose Transfer or Reset.
- Select Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow Erase Assistant and enter requested Apple Account or administrator credentials.
- Allow the Mac to erase and restart.
- Stop at the setup assistant. Do not create a new personal account.
If the option is absent, do not assume something is wrong. The hardware or macOS version may not meet the requirements. Use Apple’s current instructions for that Mac and operating-system version instead.
Erase an older Intel Mac
Older Intel Macs without the reset shortcut require a manual process:
- Verify your backup.
- Sign out of iCloud and other Apple services.
- Forget paired Bluetooth accessories.
- Start the Mac in macOS Recovery.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select the correct internal startup volume and erase it using the format recommended for that Mac and Recovery environment.
- Reinstall macOS.
- When Setup Assistant appears, press Command-Q to shut down instead of configuring the Mac for yourself.
Apple also lists resetting NVRAM as an Intel-Mac preparation step, particularly when security or startup settings may have been changed. Follow Apple’s current instructions rather than using unofficial bypass methods.
Boot Camp and extra volumes
If Erase Assistant says other volumes must be erased, Boot Camp may have created a Windows partition. Apple says to remove Windows and its partition with Boot Camp before using the erase process.

Also check for additional APFS volumes, encrypted volumes, external startup disks, virtual-machine disk images, and separate user partitions. Erasing only the apparent user volume may leave data elsewhere.
If the Mac will not start
- Starts intermittently: Back up immediately, then erase it while it is working.
- Starts in Recovery: Use Disk Utility and reinstall macOS if preparing it for donation or resale.
- Will not power on or has a failed drive: Do not assume the data is inaccessible or erased. Consider professional data handling or storage removal.
For medical, legal, financial, business, regulated, or unusually sensitive information, a standard reinstall should not be presented as an absolute forensic guarantee. Use a qualified data-destruction or IT-disposition provider when your security requirements demand documented destruction.
Sell the Mac privately
Private sale is most attractive for a recent Apple-silicon Mac, a high-memory or high-storage configuration, a machine in good condition, or any computer valuable enough to justify listing, communication, packing, shipping, and dispute risk.
Write an accurate listing
Include the exact model and year, chip or processor, memory, storage, macOS version, battery condition, included accessories, repair history, defects, and whether the display, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, camera, ports, Wi-Fi, and charging work. State that the Mac has been erased and is showing Setup Assistant, and that it is free of Activation Lock and remote management.
Use completed-sale data—not merely current asking prices—to estimate market value. Adjust for configuration, battery health, cosmetic condition, warranty or AppleCare, charger availability, local versus shipped sale, seasonal demand, platform fees, and return risk. There is no dependable universal “average old Mac value.”
Reduce transaction risk
- Do not publish the full serial number.
- Photograph the serial number and condition privately before shipment.
- Use tracked and insured shipping where the platform permits it.
- Keep the shipping receipt and communications.
- Watch for fake payment confirmations, shipping notices, chargebacks, and return fraud.
- For local sales, use a safe public meeting location and verify payment before handing over the Mac.

Apple Trade In
Apple provides an online estimate and may accept an eligible Mac in an Apple Store. Eligible devices can receive purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card; devices without trade-in value may still be recycled for free. Treat the online amount as a time-sensitive estimate and recheck it on the transaction date. See Apple Trade In.
Gazelle
Gazelle offers an online estimate, prepaid shipping, and payment by check, PayPal, or Amazon Gift Card. Gazelle’s help materials describe a price promise when the submitted device matches the quoted model and condition and generally provide a return window for accepted or revised offers. Review the current terms at Gazelle’s help center before shipping.

Best Buy’s trade-in value is generally issued as a Best Buy e-Gift Card. Eligibility, accepted categories, limits, fees, and recycling rules can vary by item and state. Best Buy says Apple devices must have Find My disabled and be removed from the iCloud account. Check the current trade-in FAQs and recycling terms before visiting a store.

Quotes change with model, configuration, condition, inventory, promotions, geography, and date. Never treat a published example as a guaranteed offer.
Recycle it safely
Recycle when the Mac is nonfunctional, uneconomical to repair, unsafe, or unlikely to find a suitable user. Apple says its recycling program accepts Apple devices for free, including devices that do not qualify for trade-in credit, subject to program terms. Its program may also accept batteries, cables, cases, accessories, monitors, and packaging. Start at Apple Trade In.
Best Buy accepts various electronics, but accepted categories, item limits, monitor rules, fees, and state restrictions differ. Check the current Best Buy recycling page and local-store requirements before traveling.
Battery warning
A swollen, leaking, punctured, or damaged MacBook battery is a safety issue, not ordinary cosmetic damage. Do not mail or transport it through ordinary trade-in shipping. Keep it away from heat and puncture risk and contact Apple, a qualified repair provider, a hazardous-materials service, or an appropriate local e-waste program. Apple’s trade-in guidance says not to ship electronics with swollen, damaged, or defective batteries.
Erase the Mac before giving it to a recycler whenever possible. Do not rely solely on a recycler’s downstream process to protect your personal information.
Special cases and common failures
The Mac was already given away
If it remains associated with your account, use Find My or iCloud.com to erase and remove it when possible. If Activation Lock remains, the new owner may be unable to activate it. Apple’s guidance on removing devices is available through the iCloud user guide.
You forgot the Apple Account password
Do not use bypass tools. Recover the account through Apple’s official account-recovery process or contact Apple Support. A legitimate buyer generally cannot remove another person’s Activation Lock without the owner’s credentials or an authorized support process.
The Mac has a firmware password
An Intel Mac’s firmware password can interfere with Recovery and resale. Remove it with the proper administrator credentials before transfer. Do not recommend unofficial bypass procedures.
The display is broken or the charger is missing
A Mac with a working computer but failed display can be sold honestly as damaged, used headless with an external display, repaired, or donated for parts. Compare repair cost with likely resale value. A missing charger can substantially reduce value and may make donation impractical; identify the correct replacement before including one.
The Mac is extremely old or dead
PowerPC, early Intel, and obsolete-port models may have little general resale value but can still interest collectors, repairers, legacy-software users, or educators. Clearly disclose limitations. A dead Mac may still contain recoverable data, so address storage before disposal.
