Yes—YouTube offers a legitimate student membership. Eligible full-time students at approved higher-education institutions can sign up through YouTube and verify enrollment with SheerID. The discount requires annual re-verification and is available for up to four consecutive years.
For U.S. readers, current pricing coverage reports YouTube Premium Student at $8.99 per month as of August 16, 2026, versus $15.99 for the individual plan. YouTube’s checkout page is the final authority because prices can vary by country, tax, billing platform, promotions, and account.

How to sign up for YouTube Premium Student
- Sign in to the Google account you want to use for the membership.
- Open YouTube’s official student signup page: youtube.com/premium/student/inapp.
- Select Get Premium.
- Enter your school’s name in the SheerID verification form and submit the requested enrollment information.
- If YouTube verifies you automatically, follow the redirect back to YouTube.
- If SheerID requests more information, upload an accepted, current enrollment document through the official form.
- Choose or add a payment method.
- Select Buy and review the membership and billing details.
After subscribing, you can review the membership at youtube.com/purchases. Use a computer or mobile browser for the signup flow; do not assume the YouTube app will show the student option.
If you only want the music service, use the separate YouTube Music Premium Student signup page. That is a different, narrower membership.

How much does YouTube Premium Student cost?
Reported U.S. pricing as of August 16, 2026:
| Plan | Reported U.S. price |
|---|---|
| YouTube Premium Student | $8.99 per month |
| YouTube Premium Individual | $15.99 per month |
| YouTube Premium Family | $26.99 per month |
| YouTube Premium Lite | $8.99 per month |
| YouTube Premium Annual | $159.99 per year |
Sources for the reported U.S. figures include current pricing coverage and NerdWallet’s plan information. YouTube does not publish one permanent global price table on its student-help page.
At $8.99 per month, the student plan is approximately $7 cheaper each month than the reported $15.99 individual price—about $84 over 12 months before taxes. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed bill amount. Check the amount, tax, currency, renewal terms, and billing provider at checkout.
Who is eligible?
You generally need to meet all of these conditions:
- You are enrolled as a full-time student at a higher-education institution.
- Your country or territory supports YouTube student memberships.
- Your institution is approved and recognizable through SheerID.
- You successfully complete SheerID’s verification process.
- You re-verify your eligibility each year.
YouTube’s supported locations include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Mexico, Brazil, much of Europe, and other countries. Availability and criteria vary by location. Check the school lookup in the official form rather than relying on a general list.
Having a school email address, student ID, acceptance letter, or past enrollment does not automatically establish eligibility. Part-time students, certificate students, continuing-education students, online-program students, recent graduates, and high-school students should not assume they qualify. The official YouTube and SheerID flow is decisive.

SheerID verification: documents, timing, and privacy
Some applicants are approved immediately. Others are asked to complete manual review. YouTube says U.S. users may receive an eligibility-status email in approximately 20 minutes after manual review, while users in other locations may wait up to 48 hours. These are estimates, not guarantees.
Document requirements vary by country and institution. SheerID may accept current enrollment evidence showing your name, school, and academic term, but no specific document is guaranteed. Upload only through the official YouTube/SheerID form.
- Use current, legible documents.
- Make sure your name and school information are consistent where required.
- Redact unnecessary sensitive information if the form permits it.
- Keep the verification confirmation for your records.
- Never send enrollment records or student IDs to coupon sites, resellers, or unofficial activation services.
For verification questions, use the contact route shown in the form or the official SheerID help center.
What if your school is not listed?
A missing school does not necessarily mean you made a mistake. The institution may not be approved, may appear under a different formal name, may be in the wrong country selection, or may not yet have current enrollment data in the verification system. Your course type may also fall outside the plan’s criteria.
- Search using the institution’s formal name.
- Confirm that you selected the correct country or territory.
- Try again later if your enrollment was only recently confirmed.
- Contact SheerID through its official help center.
Do not use another person’s school information or misrepresent your location.

- Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
What if verification succeeds but signup loops?
Try these checks:
- Confirm you are signed into the same Google account used during verification.
- Return to the student landing page instead of the standard Premium page.
- Open YouTube’s Paid memberships area and look for the signup notification.
- Check purchases and billing records.
- Sign out of conflicting Google sessions or retry in a private browser window.
If the verification was approved but the student checkout still does not appear, contact YouTube support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow existing subscribers switch to the student plan
YouTube generally requires subscribers with an active paid membership—including some trials—to cancel the current membership first, wait for the existing access period to end, and then enroll through the student page. NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube and YouTube TV are excluded from this particular switching instruction.
- Open YouTube’s paid-membership page.
- Select your current Premium or Music Premium membership.
- Cancel the membership.
- Note the date when the current billing period ends.
- After access ends, return to the student signup page.
- Complete SheerID verification and purchase the student plan.
Canceling does not necessarily create an immediate prorated refund. You will normally retain access through the period already paid for, but refund treatment depends on the billing platform and applicable policy.
What does the student plan include?
YouTube Premium Student includes the standard YouTube Premium benefits:
- Ad-free YouTube viewing.
- Background play.
- Offline downloads.
- YouTube Music Premium access.
- Use across supported devices and supported YouTube Kids experiences.
YouTube Music Premium Student is not the same product. It is intended primarily for music and includes ad-free music listening, background play, and offline music access. It does not provide the full ad-free video benefits of YouTube Premium. Choose the music-only plan through YouTube Music’s official student page only if that narrower feature set meets your needs.

Annual verification and the four-year limit
You must re-verify student eligibility every year. Student membership is available for up to four consecutive years; that period is not necessarily identical to the time remaining at your particular school.
Watch for YouTube or SheerID renewal notices and complete verification before the deadline. If you stop qualifying, the discounted membership may end or transition to another membership depending on your location and applicable terms. Review YouTube’s student-membership management guidance for renewal details.
Is YouTube Premium Student worth it?
It is usually the strongest YouTube option for an eligible student who watches videos regularly and also wants music benefits. The reported U.S. student price is the same as the reported Premium Lite price, but Premium Student includes more features.
Choose Premium Student if you want ad-free videos, downloads, background play, and YouTube Music Premium and expect to remain eligible for at least several months. Choose Music Premium Student if music is your priority and you do not need ad-free ordinary YouTube videos.
Premium Lite may suit someone who mainly wants fewer ads and does not need music access, background play, or downloads. It is not a student discount and should not be treated as equivalent to Premium Student.

A family or two-person plan may reduce the cost per person for qualifying household members, but those plans are household-oriented. They are not a reason to misrepresent student status, share credentials improperly, or add unrelated roommates or friends.
Alternatives and what to avoid
Spotify Premium Student may be a better fit for a music-first student, particularly when a Hulu bundle is actively included. However, the page’s $6.99 promotional offer was listed as ending August 11, 2026, so it should not be treated as active on August 16 or later without confirming the live terms. Spotify does not replace ad-free YouTube video.
A nonstudent can consider YouTube Premium Individual, Family, Annual, prepaid, or Premium Lite plans where available. Avoid “cheap YouTube Premium” resellers, VPN-based regional pricing, unofficial family invitations, and shared-account sellers. YouTube’s paid-service terms prohibit misleading location claims and allow access to be restricted based on location detection. These arrangements can also create payment disputes, account-access problems, and credential risks. Use official YouTube, Google, and SheerID pages instead.
Sources and current-price note
For eligibility, enrollment, verification, supported countries, and plan limits, see YouTube’s student-membership help page. For plan categories, see YouTube’s plan overview.
