Cash can keep money accessible, bonds may suit some goals and time horizons, and reinvestment should fit your overall portfolio—not just this one sale. There is no universally correct split.
This is general U.S. federal tax and investing information, not individualized advice. Your tax residence, sale and acquisition details, financial obligations, goals, and existing investments all affect the decision.

First, work out how much of the sale proceeds is available
Gross proceeds are not the same as taxable gain—or money you can necessarily spend or invest. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. A sale for U.S. dollars generally recognizes a gain or loss; the calculation generally compares the amount realized with your adjusted basis. The amount realized includes cash and other relevant value received, less allocable digital-asset transaction costs. See the IRS digital asset FAQs, including Q49 and Q52.

Reconstruct the transaction
Gather records for the acquisition and sale, including dates, units, transaction details, basis, sale proceeds, and relevant costs. The IRS says digital-asset records should include the date and time of each transaction, units, fair market value, and basis. Use your own records to check broker statements and any Form 1099-DA; a broker form does not replace your responsibility to keep records and report accurately. The IRS explains recordkeeping and reporting on its digital assets guidance page.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Check the holding period and reporting context
For a capital asset, a holding period of one year or less is short-term; more than one year is long-term. The IRS says the period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date. Covered broker gross-proceeds reporting applies to covered sales from January 1, 2025; basis reporting phases in for certain covered transactions from January 1, 2026. These reporting rules do not determine your final tax by themselves. Other gains or losses, income, filing status, and applicable law also matter.
A sizable gain can raise estimated-tax-payment questions. The IRS discusses this in its estimated-tax FAQ on large gains. Whether you need to pay, and how much, depends on your full circumstances and the relevant tax year; the sale amount alone is not enough to calculate a bill.

Protect money needed for taxes, bills, and near-term goals
Before choosing an investment, list foreseeable obligations and the dates when you may need the money. That can include a tax payment you have assessed with appropriate guidance, essential expenses, planned purchases, or an emergency reserve. Keep amounts needed soon in a form whose access and withdrawal terms fit those dates; avoid assuming that all sale proceeds are available for long-term investing.
Investor.gov describes savings accounts as one option for short-term goals and emergency funds. The trade-off is ready access and security versus comparatively low interest; if prices rise faster than the account earns, inflation can reduce purchasing power. Rates, fees, withdrawal terms, and any applicable deposit protection depend on the account and institution. See Investor.gov’s rainy-day savings guidance and the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

Compare cash, bonds, and reinvestment against your goal
These choices are not mutually exclusive. After accounting for obligations and liquidity, compare the remaining amount with your goals, time horizon, comfort with losses, and current portfolio. The questions below help distinguish what each option can do from the risks to investigate.
| Option | Potential role | Questions to ask | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash or savings | Keep funds accessible for spending, emergencies, or a near-term goal. | When will you need the money? How quickly can you withdraw it? What are the rate, fees, withdrawal terms, and applicable deposit protections? | Interest may be relatively low, and inflation can erode purchasing power. Account terms and protections depend on the specific product and circumstances. Investor.gov |
| Bonds | Potentially provide interest and, under the instrument’s terms, principal repayment at maturity. | Who is the issuer? What are the maturity, credit quality, liquidity, tax characteristics, and price sensitivity? Might you need to sell before maturity? | Bond risks and prices vary. Selling before maturity can expose you to price changes; bonds are not risk-free, and higher-yield bonds carry higher risk. Investor.gov bond FAQs |
| Reinvestment | Direct funds toward longer-term goals and bring the overall portfolio closer to a chosen allocation. | What is the goal and horizon? What losses could you tolerate financially and emotionally? Would the investment diversify your portfolio or increase concentration? What fees, taxes, and risks apply? | Diversification can help manage concentration risk but cannot guarantee against loss. The right allocation is personal and depends on the whole portfolio. Investor.gov on asset allocation and diversification |
If you are considering bonds, compare the specific bond
A bond is a loan to an issuer under specified terms. Investors typically receive interest and principal at maturity, but the terms and risks differ across bonds. “Bonds” is not one uniform risk level. The SEC’s investor education guide describes several categories:

| Bond category | What the guide identifies | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Treasury bills | Short-term U.S. government securities. | Maturity and whether the timing matches when you need the proceeds. |
| Treasury notes | U.S. government securities with maturities up to ten years. | Maturity, interest-rate sensitivity, liquidity, and tax treatment. |
| Treasury bonds | U.S. government securities typically with 30-year maturities. | Long maturity can make price changes relevant if you might sell before maturity. |
| TIPS | Treasury securities whose principal adjusts with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). | Terms, maturity, price, and how the inflation adjustment fits your goal. |
| Municipal, corporate, and other government bonds | Categories identified by issuer type. | Issuer credit quality, default risk, tax status, liquidity, fees, maturity, and price sensitivity. |
These descriptions are categories to compare, not recommendations. Review the specific bond’s terms and risks, especially if you may need to sell before maturity. The Investor.gov bond FAQs explain bond features and risks.
Make reinvestment a whole-portfolio decision
A bitcoin sale changes one part of your finances; it does not, by itself, establish an appropriate allocation. Consider how the proceeds would combine with your existing investments and how much exposure you already have to each asset or risk. Investor.gov says, “The asset allocation decision is a personal one,” and frames it around goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Its guidance on asset allocation and diversification explains that diversification can reduce concentration exposure but cannot guarantee against loss.

The evidence does not establish a standard percentage for cash, bonds, or reinvestment after a bitcoin sale. A practical sequence is to reserve money for known obligations and near-term needs, then assess the remaining amount against your existing plan. If your tax situation or investment decision is complex, you may choose to consult a qualified tax professional or financial adviser; check credentials and disciplinary history before hiring. The SEC provides guidance on asset allocation and investment decisions.
What this framework cannot decide for you
A specific allocation or tax estimate would require information such as your tax jurisdiction, purchase and sale dates, basis, sale amount, income and filing context, other gains or losses, debts and obligations, emergency liquidity, goal dates, risk tolerance, and existing portfolio. U.S. state and local rules, and tax rules outside the United States, are not covered here. Tax rules, reporting requirements, investment products, and rates can change; verify current IRS and SEC guidance before acting.
