A useful comparison starts with those different risks, then checks comparable financial periods, balance sheets, dividends and valuation. The latest headline figures available here cover different years—BHP FY2025 and Codan FY2026—so they do not establish which share is the better buy.
Start with what each company sells
BHP is a diversified mining group with exposure to copper, iron ore, steelmaking coal and developing potash operations. Its earnings depend substantially on what it produces and the prices it receives, alongside operating costs, asset performance and project delivery. Its FY2025 annual report recorded group copper production of 2.02 million tonnes, up 8% from FY2024, and WAIO production of 257 million tonnes attributable (290 million tonnes on a 100% basis). These are issuer-reported production figures for the year ended 30 June 2025, not a forecast. BHP annual reporting

Codan is a technology company with communications and metal-detection businesses. Its products include Minelab metal detectors, but the investment case concerns the company’s sales, margins and cash generation—not whether a particular detector is a good consumer purchase. Its results can be affected by product demand, contract and order timing, launches, acquisitions and the ability to fulfil customer demand. Codan company information

The headline operating figures illustrate different businesses, but they are not a direct growth contest: BHP’s numbers below are FY2025, while Codan’s are FY2026. Both periods ended on 30 June, but in different calendar years.
#1 Best Overall
| Company and period | Reported figures | How to interpret them |
|---|---|---|
| BHP FY2025, year ended 30 June 2025 | Group copper production: 2.02 million tonnes, up 8% year over year. WAIO production: 257 million tonnes attributable; 290 million tonnes on a 100% basis. | Production volumes show output, not revenue, profit or shareholder return. Commodity prices and costs also affect earnings. |
| Codan FY2026, year ended 30 June 2026 | Revenue: A$875.0 million, up 30%; EBIT: A$244.1 million, up 67%; NPAT: A$175.2 million, up 69%. | These are headline results from Codan’s investor summary. They are not directly comparable with BHP’s production figures or with BHP financial measures. |
Codan attributed its FY2026 growth to high demand for unmanned systems, new gold-detector products and a full-year contribution from Kägwerks. That is management’s explanation of the reported result, not an independent assessment of how much each factor contributed. Codan investor centre
For a rigorous financial comparison, use the companies’ underlying annual reports and match periods and definitions. Compare revenue, operating profit, margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt and returns on capital. BHP reports underlying, non-IFRS measures as well as statutory results; do not place an underlying profit figure beside another company’s statutory profit without explaining the difference and consulting the reconciliation in the relevant report. The headline Codan summary alone does not provide enough detail to make a complete cash-flow or balance-sheet comparison.
Assess growth plans and execution risk
BHP: production, sustaining investment and major projects
For a miner, projected growth must be weighed against the cost and schedule of building and sustaining assets. BHP’s July 2025 operational review moved expected first production from Jansen Stage 1 to mid-CY2027 and estimated capital expenditure at US$7.0–7.4 billion, compared with an original estimate of US$5.7 billion. This is historical guidance issued in July 2025, not a current project forecast; check BHP’s later disclosures before relying on it. BHP July 2025 operational review
The same review described commodity-demand support from renewable-energy investment, grid build-out, machinery exports and electric-vehicle sales. Treat that as BHP management commentary about conditions at the time, not as a present-day market forecast. When reviewing a newer outlook, distinguish the company’s aspirations from committed guidance, and examine how delays, cost increases or weaker commodity prices could affect returns on capital.
Rank #3
Codan: demand, products and delivery
For Codan, examine whether growth is broad across its businesses or concentrated in particular products, contracts or end markets. Product launches and acquisitions can support expansion, but reported growth does not by itself show whether demand will recur or how much cash the business converts into profit. Review segment disclosures, order and contract context, acquisition effects and the company’s capacity to deliver what customers demand. Codan’s investor centre lists FY2026 results and annual-report materials, as well as a 29 September 2026 H1 FY2027 trading update; consult those documents for current details rather than extrapolating from the headline FY2026 summary. Test resilience through cash flow and the balance sheet
Reported earnings are only part of the comparison. Check operating cash flow against profit, capital expenditure against cash generation, and net debt and liquidity against the risks each business faces. For BHP, consider exposure to commodity downturns, operating interruptions and large-project overruns. For Codan, assess the effects of segment concentration, uneven order or contract timing, and changes in product demand. The latest Codan headline summary cited here is insufficient to establish a detailed current balance-sheet or cash-flow position, so use its annual report and later announcements for those figures.
For either company, look across multiple years rather than treating one strong reporting period as a normal run rate. A company can report rapid earnings growth while still facing volatile cash conversion, higher investment needs or a less favourable future demand environment.

Compare dividends on a consistent basis
Codan reported a FY2026 full-year dividend of 48.5 cents per share, fully franked, up 70% year over year. A fully franked Australian dividend carries franking credits associated with company tax paid; the value to an investor depends on their tax circumstances. The declared dividend does not establish a future payout or its sustainability. Codan investor centre
Best Value
BHP’s distributions can vary with earnings and conditions in its commodity markets. Compare both companies’ dividends with earnings and free cash flow over several years, including how much was paid and whether cash generation supported it. A dividend yield requires a dated share price and a clearly identified declared or trailing dividend basis; no matched-date price or yield is established here.
Value the shares using same-date market data
No paired, same-date BHP and Codan share prices, market capitalisations or valuation multiples are established here, so a price-to-earnings comparison or claim that one share is cheaper would be unsupported. Before comparing valuations, record each share’s exchange, currency and price on the same date, then calculate market capitalisation and suitable measures such as price-to-earnings, enterprise value to EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield using consistent definitions.
- For BHP, consider how a commodity-cycle peak or trough affects earnings. A multiple based on unusually high or low mining profits may give a misleading impression of normal value.
- For Codan, examine whether current earnings and cash flow are supported across segments and whether growth drivers are likely to persist; one year’s growth rate is not a valuation by itself.
- For both, account for debt, investment needs and the quality and repeatability of cash generation. A lower multiple alone does not prove a share is a bargain.
Build a decision around your own risk context
These shares expose an investor to different sources of uncertainty. BHP offers mining exposure, where commodity markets, production and capital-intensive projects are central. Codan offers technology-business exposure, where end-market demand, product execution and contract or order patterns matter. The available headline results do not settle which is preferable: that requires current financial statements, same-date market data, valuation work and an assessment of your goals, time horizon and tolerance for risk.
