First find out whether just one restaurant location closed or the company stopped operating altogether. Contact the gift-card issuer through its official website or customer-service channel and ask where, if anywhere, the remaining balance can still be used. Do not assume another branch, a successor business, or a competitor will accept it.
Check where the gift card is still accepted
Ask the issuer to confirm the remaining balance, which locations or ordering channels accept the card, and any deadline to use it. Request the answer in writing if possible, and check the company’s current website rather than relying on an old balance page or an unverified report.

- One location closed: A card issued by a chain may remain usable at other locations or through online ordering. Confirm with the issuer before traveling or placing an order.
- The entire business closed: Redemption is less certain. The Federal Trade Commission says a company in bankruptcy may honor gift cards, and a competitor may choose to accept them, but neither outcome is assured. Ask the issuer or any proposed successor directly. FTC gift card guidance
- A competitor took over or offered to accept cards: Verify the terms with that business, including where and when the card can be used. Before deciding whether redemption is worth pursuing, weigh confirmed acceptance, any use-by deadline, and the effort or travel cost. A rumor that a nearby restaurant will honor the card is not confirmation.

Keep the physical or digital card and its number, the purchase receipt, any balance lookup or screenshots, the closure announcement, and all messages with the restaurant or successor. Write down when you contacted the business and what it said. This documentation can help if you ask your payment-card issuer to review a dispute or submit a consumer complaint.

Ask your credit-card issuer whether it can review the purchase
If you bought the gift card with a credit card, contact that card issuer promptly and ask whether the transaction may qualify for a dispute or refund request. Eligibility depends on the transaction, timing, card issuer, and applicable rules; a request is not a guarantee of recovery.
On October 8, 2025, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General advised consumers with unused Iron Hill Brewery gift cards to seek refunds from their credit-card companies after the brewery closed all restaurant locations and filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New Jersey. File a complaint if the business will not resolve it

Understand what gift-card rules do—and do not—cover
Federal rules limit expiration dates and certain fees for covered gift cards, but those protections do not guarantee that a business that has ceased operating can pay its obligations. State law, the card’s terms, and any bankruptcy case or court order may affect what options are available. Check current information with the relevant state office and, if the company is in bankruptcy, official court or case sources. The right to redeem, eligibility for a payment-card dispute, and priority in a bankruptcy cannot be determined without details such as the state, purchase date, payment method, and case-specific orders.
