What to Do When Your Mutual Fund Investment Is Down

If your mutual fund is losing money, don’t sell or hold based on the loss alone. First confirm your actual total return, then check whether the fund still fits your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, cash needs, taxes, and overall portfolio. A decline may reflect falling prices of the fund’s underlying investments; by itself, it does not show whether the fund remains appropriate.

Start by confirming what “down” means

A change in a fund’s share price is not always the same as your total return. Mutual funds calculate a net asset value (NAV), and distributions of income or capital gains can affect the NAV. If distributions were reinvested, you may own more shares even as the quoted NAV fell. Check the period shown, your number of shares, the account balance, and whether distributions were paid in cash or reinvested.

Use your account statements and the fund’s shareholder report to understand the holding. Compare like with like: a one-month decline, a year-to-date return, and the return since you bought the fund answer different questions. A displayed loss is useful information, but it is not a complete measure of what you earned or lost. If you are comparing figures from different places, make sure they refer to the same dates and account holding; otherwise, you may be comparing a share-price change with a broader return measure.

Mutual fund shares can lose value, and mutual funds are not insured or guaranteed by the FDIC or another government agency. You could lose some or all of your investment. Past performance does not predict future returns; as Investor.gov explains, a fund’s past performance is not as important as many investors think because it does not predict future returns. A recent gain or loss, therefore, should not be treated as a forecast of what the fund will do next.

Revisit when you need the money and what it is for

Ask when you expect to use the money and whether that goal or your cash needs have changed. A longer time horizon may give an investor more capacity to accept volatility; a shorter horizon may make a large decline harder to absorb if the money must soon be available. This is a decision framework, not a personal allocation prescription. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance discusses how time horizon and risk tolerance relate to investment choices.

Separate your willingness to take risk from your ability to take it. You may feel comfortable with market swings, but still have limited ability to wait out a downturn if you need the money soon. Conversely, a temporary decline may be less relevant to a distant goal if the fund’s risks and role in your portfolio remain acceptable. Revisit the original reason for owning the fund and whether the goal, timeline, or need for cash has changed since you invested. Avoid turning a general idea about a long horizon into a reason to ignore a mismatch between the fund and your actual needs.

Check whether the fund itself still fits

Read the current prospectus and latest shareholder report rather than relying on the fund name or an old description. Review the fund’s objective, strategy, risks, holdings, fees, manager or adviser, and any material operational changes. The SEC’s mutual fund guidance recommends looking beyond returns to factors such as risk, volatility, portfolio turnover, fees, taxes, and fund operations. Current documents can help you check whether the investment you own is still the investment you intended to own.

  • Objective and strategy: Does the fund still pursue the kind of investment exposure you intended to own?
  • Holdings and concentration: Do the current investments expose you to a narrow industry, region, or other concentrated risk?
  • Risk and volatility: Are the fund’s possible swings consistent with your time horizon and capacity for loss?
  • Costs: What ongoing expenses and transaction charges apply, and have they changed?
  • Fund changes: Have the strategy, holdings, manager or adviser, or operations changed in a way that matters to your reason for investing?

A fund can fall because its underlying holdings fell. The important question is not simply whether the fund is below your purchase price, but whether its current strategy and risks remain suitable for the job you need it to do. Consider the fund’s volatility and turnover as well as its headline return: a return figure alone does not show the risk taken, the costs paid, or whether the portfolio still has the characteristics you wanted.

Judge diversification across your whole portfolio

Diversification is a property of your overall portfolio, not a guarantee that comes with owning a mutual fund. Some funds are narrowly focused, and several different funds may hold many of the same companies or other investments. Review the fund’s holdings alongside the rest of your portfolio to see whether it adds exposure you need or duplicates a concentration you already have. Owning multiple funds, by itself, does not establish that your investments are diversified.

Rebalancing means bringing your portfolio back toward a considered allocation target; it is not simply selling whatever has recently declined. Before changing the fund, consider whether the change would improve the portfolio’s overall balance and whether it follows a plan. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation and diversification resource explains allocation, diversification, and rebalancing.

Compare holding, selling, and switching on the same criteria

There is no universal rule that a losing mutual fund should be sold or held. Compare the choices against your goal and circumstances, including the full costs of changing investments. Holding means continuing to accept the fund’s current strategy, risks, and ongoing expenses. Selling may address a changed goal or cash need, but brings its own pricing, fee, and possible tax considerations. Switching adds another comparison: the replacement must fit better, not merely look appealing because it has recently performed differently.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Goal and time horizon Does the fund still serve the goal, and when will you need the money?
Risk and volatility Can you tolerate the fund’s risks, and can your finances withstand a decline?
Strategy and holdings Does the fund still invest as you expect, and have its holdings or operations materially changed?
Portfolio fit Does it diversify your other investments or add overlap and concentration?
Ongoing and transaction costs What operating expenses, sales loads, redemption or exchange charges, account fees, and transfer or closing costs apply?
Taxes and account treatment Could selling or a fund distribution have tax consequences in your account and circumstances?
Cash needs How soon must the money be available, and would a change meet that need?

A switch is not automatically safer or cheaper. Compare the new investment’s strategy, risk, holdings, and costs with the fund you own, and account for the consequences of selling. SEC guidance on how fees and expenses affect an investment portfolio covers ongoing and transaction costs and considerations when changing investments. A lower expense ratio alone does not tell you whether a replacement suits your goal or risk tolerance.

Account for fees, redemption timing, and taxes

Before placing a sale or exchange order, check for sales loads, redemption or exchange charges, the fund’s operating expenses, advisory or account fees, and any transfer or closing fees. Fees reduce returns, so compare the total costs of staying invested with the costs of moving. The SEC’s fee and expense bulletin, published July 23, 2025, discusses how ongoing and transaction costs affect an investment portfolio. FINRA’s Fund Analyzer is referenced by the SEC as a tool for comparing fund costs. Include account-level charges as well as fund expenses, since a change may involve more than the advertised cost of a replacement.

Mutual fund redemptions are generally priced at the next calculated NAV, subject to applicable fees. You do not know the precise transaction NAV when you submit the order, so the amount received may differ from the price visible at that moment. This is one reason to understand the fund’s redemption terms and not assume that an order will be completed at a displayed NAV.

Taxes can complicate a decision. In a taxable account, a fund may distribute capital gains that create a tax bill even if your total return since buying the fund is negative. Your tax treatment depends on the account and your circumstances; a loss on the holding does not, on its own, establish that a distribution is tax-free or that selling has no tax consequences. Review the fund’s distribution information and consider qualified tax advice if the effect is material or unclear. Do not assess taxes solely by looking at whether the account balance is above or below your purchase amount.

Make the decision from a plan, not the loss alone

  1. Verify the numbers. Check the reporting period, NAV, shares, account balance, and distributions so you understand the holding’s total-return context.
  2. Write down the goal and timing. Identify what the money is for, when you need it, and whether those needs have changed.
  3. Review current fund documents. Use the prospectus and latest shareholder report to check strategy, risks, holdings, fees, and changes to the fund.
  4. Look across the portfolio. Check for diversification, overlap, and concentration rather than evaluating this holding in isolation.
  5. Calculate the consequences of a change. Include transaction and account charges, redemption timing, and possible tax effects before selling or switching.
  6. Choose the option that still fits. If the fund continues to serve the goal and fit your risk level and portfolio, the decline alone does not establish a reason to sell. If your needs or the fund’s strategy, risk, costs, or fit have changed, compare alternatives and their full consequences.

The SEC says it cannot tell investors how to manage a portfolio during a volatile market; its guidance is intended to help investors make informed decisions. For a material or confusing choice, a qualified financial professional can explain the tradeoffs. Ask how the professional is compensated and what costs or conflicts may apply. The SEC’s investor decision-making guidance cautions against rapid choices that ignore long-term goals, financial circumstances, and risk tolerance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I sell my mutual fund if it’s losing money?

Not based on the loss alone. First check the fund’s current strategy, risks, holdings, costs, and fit with your goal, time horizon, cash needs, risk tolerance, taxes, and broader portfolio. A decline does not, by itself, show whether the fund remains appropriate.

Should I hold or sell a mutual fund after a downturn?

Compare both choices against the same factors: goal and time horizon, risk and volatility, strategy and holdings, portfolio diversification, ongoing and transaction costs, taxes, and when you need the money. If the fund still fits, a market decline alone does not establish a reason to sell; if your needs or the fund’s fit have changed, compare alternatives and their full consequences.

Can I owe taxes if my mutual fund is down?

Possibly. A mutual fund in a taxable account may distribute capital gains that create a tax bill even when your total return since buying is negative. Tax treatment depends on your account and circumstances, so review distribution information and seek qualified tax advice if the effect is material or unclear.

When will I know the price I get if I redeem mutual fund shares?

Redemptions are generally priced at the next calculated NAV, subject to applicable fees. The precise transaction NAV is not known when you place the order, so it may differ from the price visible at that moment.

Does owning several mutual funds make my portfolio diversified?

Not necessarily. A fund may be narrowly focused, and different funds can hold many of the same investments. Review holdings across your portfolio to check whether funds diversify one another or create overlap and concentration.

The Bottom Line

Don’t let a mutual fund loss make the decision for you. Verify your return, revisit your goal and time horizon, review the fund’s current documents and your portfolio, then weigh fees, taxes, and redemption terms before deciding whether to hold, sell, or switch.
