A simple long-term portfolio starts with a stock-and-bond allocation you can live with—not a list of ticker symbols. Decide what the money is for and when you may need it, choose a mix that fits your goals and tolerance for volatility, then use broadly diversified ETFs with clear roles. Keep costs and trading details in view, and review the allocation at least annually. Vanguard’s sample mixes are educational examples, not personalized recommendations; any investment can lose value.

Start with the job the money needs to do

Before choosing an ETF, define the goal for this money and the likely time horizon. Money intended for a distant goal may be invested differently from money you expect to need sooner. Your tolerance for volatility matters too: a portfolio is only useful if you can stick with it through market declines instead of abandoning the plan at the worst time.

Vanguard’s investor education material says the right allocation depends on an investor’s risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial goals. Those factors cannot be reduced to one universally correct stock-and-bond ratio. Your age alone does not establish the right mix, and an example allocation is not a forecast of returns or a recommendation tailored to your circumstances.

  • Goal: What is the money for?
  • Time horizon: When might you need to withdraw it, and could that timing change?
  • Risk tolerance: How much decline could you withstand without selling or changing the plan?
  • Financial circumstances: Consider liquidity needs, debt, account type, tax location, and other relevant parts of your finances before investing.

This is general educational information, not individualized financial or tax advice. If you cannot tell whether a potential loss would derail the goal, resolve that question before choosing funds.

Choose a stock-and-bond mix before choosing ETFs

Stocks and bonds play different roles, but neither makes a portfolio risk-free. A greater stock allocation may provide more growth potential while exposing the portfolio to more volatility. A greater bond allocation may add stability but can dampen long-term returns. The best balance depends on what you need the money to do and how you are likely to react when markets move.

Vanguard presents the following stock-and-bond allocations as examples of aggressive, moderate, and conservative strategies. The page does not state a publication year for these illustrations, and they should not be treated as prescriptions, return estimates, or guarantees.

Vanguard example Stocks Bonds What the label suggests
Aggressive 80% 20% More weight in stocks, with greater potential volatility.
Moderate 60% 40% A middle-ground illustration, not a default suitable for everyone.
Conservative 40% 60% More weight in bonds, which may add stability while limiting growth potential.

These percentages describe the portfolio’s overall stock-and-bond split. They do not specify how to divide stocks between U.S. and international markets, how to diversify bond holdings, or which ETFs to buy. Those decisions require looking at the actual fund exposure and your own circumstances.

Test whether you can stay with the mix

Do not select the most aggressive example simply because it has the highest stock percentage, or the most conservative because it sounds safer. Ask how you would respond if the portfolio fell substantially and took time to recover. Market volatility is a normal part of investing; if a mix would prompt you to sell in a downturn, consider whether a different target is more realistic before you invest.

Give each ETF a distinct role

ETFs can provide access to baskets of securities rather than requiring you to select individual companies or bonds. Vanguard describes broad-market funds as a way to gain exposure across U.S. and international stocks and bonds. A straightforward portfolio can assign each holding a specific job—such as broad U.S. stocks, international stocks, or bonds—while keeping the overall allocation aligned with the target you chose.

There is no ticker-by-ticker portfolio recommendation established here. The right fund depends on its current holdings, benchmark, costs, risks, tax information, and the role it would play alongside your other investments. A fund’s name or the fact that it is an ETF does not establish that it is suitable for you.

Prefer clear coverage over a growing ticker list

Adding more ETFs does not automatically add more diversification. Two funds may hold many of the same securities or cover overlapping parts of the market. That can make a portfolio harder to understand without meaningfully expanding its exposure, and may add costs or complexity.

Before adding a fund, identify the exposure it contributes and compare it with what you already own. If its role is unclear or its holdings substantially overlap another holding, pause before adding it. Broad diversification means spreading risk across dimensions such as asset classes, sectors, company sizes, and geographies; it is not simply owning a large number of funds.

Understand what diversification can and cannot do

Diversification can help manage risk, but it does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. A diversified portfolio can also underperform a concentrated investment that happens to perform exceptionally well. Bonds typically, but not always, rise when stocks fall, and the relationship between stocks and bonds can change with market conditions. Do not assume that a bond allocation will offset every stock-market decline.

Compare ETFs by exposure, costs, and trading details

Use the current fund page and prospectus for each ETF you are considering. Compare the fund’s job in your portfolio, what it holds, its benchmark, its expenses, and other practical details. Check the documents rather than inferring the exposure from a ticker or product name.

What to check Why it matters What to look for
Exposure and holdings Establishes what the ETF actually adds and whether it overlaps another holding. Current holdings, asset class, market coverage, and the fund’s stated investment approach.
Benchmark and tracking Shows the market or index the fund is intended to follow and helps you assess how it has tracked that benchmark. The named benchmark and the fund’s disclosed tracking information; do not assume all funds covering a broad category behave identically.
Expense ratio and other costs Investment costs reduce the amount of money that remains invested. Current fund expenses, plus any trading or account charges that may apply through your broker.
Liquidity and trade price ETF shares trade in the market, and the execution price may differ from the fund’s underlying value. Trading information and the price at which an order may execute. Vanguard notes that an ETF’s market price may be above or below its net asset value (NAV).
Tax implications and risks These depend on the fund and the investor’s circumstances. The current prospectus and fund tax information, considered alongside your account type and tax location.

An expense ratio is important, but it is not the only cost to consider. Trading commissions or other broker charges may apply, depending on the account and platform. Review current terms before placing an order rather than relying on an old fee figure or assuming all brokers charge the same way.

Build the allocation with a deliberate process

Once you have chosen a target, work from the overall mix down to the holdings. The goal is not to make the portfolio complicated; it is to ensure that the funds collectively provide the intended stock-and-bond exposure without accidental duplication.

  1. Write down the target. Record the stock-and-bond mix you selected and why it fits the goal, time horizon, and risk tolerance.
  2. Choose the broad exposures. Decide which distinct market roles you want represented, such as U.S. stocks, international stocks, and bonds. Determine the intended weight for each role without assuming that a particular split is right for every investor.
  3. Check candidate funds. For each Vanguard ETF under consideration, read its current fund page and prospectus. Confirm its holdings, benchmark, expense ratio, risks, and tax information.
  4. Look for overlap. Review the funds together, not just one at a time. Ask whether each holding adds a distinct exposure or duplicates one already in the portfolio.
  5. Check account and broker terms. Confirm that the ETF is available in your account and check any trading charges, order mechanics, and other applicable terms.
  6. Invest toward the target. Use the allocation as the plan rather than letting recent market performance dictate what to buy. Vanguard says fractional investing is available for Vanguard ETFs on its own platform; availability and trading terms at other brokers may differ.
  7. Record the plan. Keep the target allocation and the reasons for it somewhere you can consult at review time. This makes it easier to distinguish a genuine change in circumstances from a reaction to market noise.

If you are selecting specific Vanguard funds, verify current facts directly in the official fund documents. Product listings and fund details can change; do not rely on a remembered ticker, old expense ratio, prior holding list, or a past price as if it were current.

Understand how ETF orders work

ETF shares trade through a brokerage account at market prices. The price you pay or receive may be more or less than the ETF’s NAV, which is the value of its underlying assets per share. The market price at the time of a transaction—not a promise to trade at NAV—is what determines the transaction price.

Vanguard’s buying guidance says fractional investing is available for Vanguard ETFs on its platform. That detail applies to Vanguard’s platform; it should not be assumed to describe every broker. A broker may charge commissions or other fees, so check the current account terms. Before trading, confirm the ETF, the order details, the amount, and the price information shown by your brokerage.

Review the portfolio and rebalance when needed

Stocks and bonds move at different rates, so a portfolio that began at its target can drift. If stocks rise faster than bonds, for example, stocks may come to represent a larger share of the total than you intended. Rebalancing is maintenance: it brings the portfolio back toward its plan rather than trying to predict the next market move.

Vanguard recommends checking the allocation at least once a year and says investors may consider rebalancing when the mix is off target by at least five percentage points. The page does not state a publication year for this guidance. Treat the interval and threshold as a practical review framework, not a guarantee of better returns or a rule that fits every investor.

  1. Review at least annually. Compare the current stock-and-bond allocation with your written target.
  2. Measure the drift. Check whether the actual allocation has moved at least five percentage points from the target, as described in Vanguard’s education guidance.
  3. Consider whether action is appropriate. If the allocation has drifted, decide whether to bring it back toward the target. Take account of your circumstances and the costs or tax implications of a transaction before acting.
  4. Revisit the target when life changes. A changed goal, time horizon, income need, or financial circumstance may justify reviewing the allocation itself—not merely restoring an old target.

Rebalancing should not be confused with reacting to headlines or trying to sell before a downturn. Its purpose is to keep the portfolio aligned with the strategy you chose. Whether and how to rebalance in a particular account depends on account terms and personal tax circumstances.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Picking tickers before setting an allocation: A list of ETFs is not a plan unless you know what overall exposure it is meant to create.
  • Treating Vanguard’s examples as personal advice: The 80/20, 60/40, and 40/60 mixes are educational illustrations, not a diagnosis of your needs.
  • Assuming more ETFs mean more diversification: Overlapping holdings can add complexity and costs without adding a distinct exposure.
  • Assuming bonds always rise when stocks fall: Vanguard says this is typical, not guaranteed; stock-bond relationships can change.
  • Looking only at the expense ratio: Also consider trading costs, liquidity, tracking, tax implications, and the actual exposure.
  • Assuming a trade happens at NAV: An ETF’s market transaction price can be above or below NAV.
  • Changing the plan because of short-term market moves: Review against a deliberate schedule and target, while making a new allocation decision when your goals or circumstances change.

What a simple portfolio should look like in practice

“Simple” means understandable and maintainable, not necessarily a particular number of ETFs. A portfolio is easier to manage when every holding has a clearly stated role, the combined holdings match the stock-and-bond target, costs and trading mechanics are understood, and you know when you will review it. The available Vanguard guidance supports this framework but does not establish a universal ETF lineup or a ticker-level portfolio for every reader.
