A change in your debt fund’s risk-o-meter is a prompt to review the fund—not an automatic instruction to sell, switch or invest more. Verify the change in the fund house’s Notice cum Addendum, compare the old and new labels, check the dated portfolio disclosure, and decide whether the scheme still fits your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs and ability to tolerate loss.
What a debt fund’s risk-o-meter tells you
The risk-o-meter is a summary classification of a mutual fund scheme’s risk based on its characteristics. Under the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) Master Circular for Mutual Funds as on March 20, 2026, schemes are assigned one of six levels:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Low Risk
- Low to Moderate Risk
- Moderate Risk
- Moderately High Risk
- High Risk
- Very High Risk
SEBI requires the risk level to be evaluated monthly. A changed level is evidence that the scheme’s assessed risk classification has changed; it is not, by itself, an explanation of what changed in the portfolio or a forecast of returns. The label also does not tell you whether the scheme suits your circumstances. For that, you need to read the scheme’s disclosures and consider your own needs.

The six labels give investors a common summary to consult, but the label alone is not a substitute for the underlying scheme information. Do not read a label as a promise about returns or as a complete account of every holding or possible source of loss. It is most useful as a signal to review the fund’s current information and your reasons for holding it.

A debt fund is not risk-free merely because it invests in debt instruments. The risk-o-meter gives a broad classification, not a complete account of every holding or every possible source of loss. Use it as a signal to examine the scheme’s current information rather than as a substitute for that information.
What the fund house must disclose when the rating changes
SEBI’s Master Circular requires a change in the risk-o-meter of a scheme or its benchmark to be communicated through a Notice cum Addendum and by email or SMS to unitholders of that scheme. The circular states: “Any change in risk-o-meter of the scheme or the Benchmark shall be communicated by way of Notice cum Addendum and by way of an e-mail or SMS to unitholders of that particular scheme.”
The scheme’s risk-o-meter is evaluated monthly. The risk-o-meter is disclosed along with the scheme portfolio on the asset management company (AMC) and Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) websites within 10 calendar days after the end of each month. Mutual funds also disclose the scheme’s risk level as of March 31 and the number of times it changed during that financial year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese disclosures give you several ways to check a change: the notice explains what the fund house has formally communicated, the monthly portfolio disclosure lets you inspect the scheme’s holdings, and the annual disclosure provides a limited history of rating changes during the financial year. A notice may concern the scheme’s own rating, its benchmark rating, or both, so confirm which one changed before drawing conclusions.
The monthly review and the 10-calendar-day publication window are related but distinct points: the rating is evaluated monthly, and the updated risk-o-meter appears with portfolio information on the AMC and AMFI websites within 10 calendar days after month-end. The annual March 31 disclosure is a separate snapshot and count; it does not replace checking the latest notice and portfolio when you are reviewing a current change.
How to review the change
1. Find and verify the Notice cum Addendum
Use the AMC’s official website or the notification sent by the fund house to locate the Notice cum Addendum. Confirm the scheme name, the notice date and whether the change applies to the scheme’s risk-o-meter, the benchmark’s risk-o-meter, or both. If you hold more than one scheme from the AMC, do not assume a notice about one scheme applies to your other holdings.

Compare the notice with the email or SMS you received. The communication is meant for unitholders of the particular scheme; if you are unsure whether a message concerns your holding, verify it against the scheme documents available through the AMC rather than acting on an unverified message.
Keep the notice and note its date as part of your review. The notice is the formal communication about the change, while the portfolio is the dated record you can examine for information about the scheme’s holdings. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other.
2. Write down the old and new labels
Record the previous and revised risk levels and the dates associated with them. This makes the direction of the change clear and helps you avoid confusing a scheme rating with a benchmark rating. A move to a higher level means the scheme has received a higher risk classification under the applicable assessment; a move to a lower level means the classification is lower. Neither direction, by itself, tells you why the classification changed or what action you should take.
If you are comparing the scheme with its benchmark or with another fund, use disclosures from the same date. Comparing labels or portfolios from different reporting dates can give a misleading picture of how the schemes relate to one another.
Also keep the scheme and benchmark labels separate in your notes. The circular’s communication requirement covers a change in either, but a benchmark’s revised label should not be mistaken for a revision to the scheme’s own risk-o-meter. Establish exactly what changed before comparing the scheme’s profile or considering whether it remains appropriate for you.
3. Read the latest portfolio disclosure
Open the scheme’s most recent portfolio disclosure alongside the previous one and compare what the documents actually show. Review the investment objective and category as well as the holdings. Depending on the information disclosed, useful points to examine include credit quality, maturity or duration exposure, concentration and liquidity. Treat these as review prompts, not as proof of the cause of the rating change.

Look for changes visible between the two dated portfolios rather than assuming that a particular security or risk factor explains the new label. The investment objective and category help put the holdings in context, while the portfolio information provides the evidence available for your review. If a comparison point is not disclosed in the documents you have, do not fill the gap with an assumption.
The rating-change rule establishes disclosure duties; it does not identify the reason for a change in an unnamed scheme. Do not infer a particular holding, credit event, interest-rate exposure or liquidity issue just from the direction of the risk-o-meter. If the Notice cum Addendum or portfolio documents do not make the reason clear, the documents do not establish it.
4. Check the dates and disclosure history
Use the reporting date printed on the portfolio, not just the date you viewed or downloaded it. SEBI’s current rule calls for the risk-o-meter to be reviewed monthly and disclosed with the portfolio on the AMC and AMFI websites within 10 calendar days after month-end. The annual disclosure gives the scheme’s level as of March 31 and the number of changes during that financial year.

For a current review, prioritize the latest dated notice and portfolio information.
When comparing two schemes, line up their disclosures from the same date. A label or portfolio from one reporting period should not be set against another fund’s information from a different period and treated as a like-for-like comparison. Record the dates alongside the ratings, holdings and other points you review.
5. Reassess whether the scheme still fits you
Ask whether the scheme remains appropriate for the purpose for which you invested. Consider the goal the investment is meant to serve, when you may need the money, how much liquidity you require and whether you can tolerate a loss. Then relate those needs to the scheme’s stated objective and the current information in its documents.

There is no single correct response for every investor. The same rating change may matter differently depending on an investor’s time horizon, liquidity needs and capacity to tolerate loss. If you cannot determine whether the scheme remains suitable for you, consult a financial adviser. SEBI’s Master Circular advises investors who are unclear about a product’s suitability to consult an adviser.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep this assessment personal: the risk-o-meter classifies the scheme, not your individual ability to bear a loss or the date you may need your money. A current label and portfolio can inform the review, but the decision also depends on the goal, time horizon and liquidity needs you are trying to meet.
Should you sell, hold or switch?
Do not redeem or switch solely because the risk-o-meter moved up or down. The regulatory disclosure requirements call for communication and updated information; they do not prescribe a transaction for investors after a change. A rating change alone is not a personalized buy, sell or switch recommendation.
Decide only after reviewing the notice and current scheme information against your own circumstances. A lower rating is not, by itself, a reason to invest more, just as a higher rating is not, by itself, a reason to exit. If a review raises concerns you cannot resolve from the disclosures, seek independent professional advice before making a decision.
Likewise, do not treat the notification as a deadline or instruction to transact. The research-backed regulatory requirement is to communicate the change and make disclosure information available; it does not set a universal investor response. Whether to hold, redeem or switch depends on the individual investor and the current scheme documents.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Risk-o-meter | The scheme’s level and, separately, the benchmark’s level as of the same date. |
| Portfolio and credit profile | The holdings and credit information shown in each scheme’s dated portfolio disclosure. |
| Maturity or duration | Any maturity or duration information disclosed, to understand the scheme’s stated interest-rate exposure. |
| Concentration and liquidity | What the documents show about concentration and liquidity; do not assume details that are not disclosed. |
| Objective and category | Whether the schemes have comparable stated objectives and categories before treating them as alternatives. |
| Your needs | How each scheme relates to your goal, time horizon and liquidity needs. |
This framework helps organize a review; it does not establish that one scheme is better than another. The portfolio disclosures support comparison, while the personal-fit assessment depends on your circumstances.
Apply the same questions to each option and use the same disclosure date wherever possible. A lower risk-o-meter alone does not establish that another scheme is a suitable alternative for your objective, category, time horizon or liquidity needs. Compare the information the documents actually provide, then assess whether either scheme fits your circumstances.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a label as a diagnosis: The rating classifies risk; it does not identify the specific reason for a change in a particular scheme.
- Confusing the scheme and benchmark: Read the notice closely to determine which risk-o-meter changed.
- Using mismatched dates: Compare portfolio information and ratings from the same reporting date wherever possible.
- Assuming the change predicts returns: The risk-o-meter is not a return forecast.
- Making an automatic transaction: The change calls for review, not a universal instruction to sell, hold or switch.
- Ignoring personal suitability: A scheme’s label cannot account for your individual goal, time horizon, liquidity needs or ability to tolerate loss.
- Assuming the annual count explains the change: The March 31 disclosure reports the number of changes during the financial year, not the reasons for them.
- Expecting a generic cause: The rules describe what must be disclosed, but the specific cause must be checked against the fund’s own notice and dated portfolio.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first when my debt fund’s risk-o-meter changes?
Find the AMC’s Notice cum Addendum, confirm the scheme and date, and check whether the scheme’s rating, its benchmark’s rating, or both changed. Then compare the old and new labels and review the latest dated portfolio disclosure.
Does a higher risk-o-meter mean I should sell my debt fund?
No. A higher classification is a reason to review the scheme, not an automatic sell instruction. The disclosure rules do not prescribe a transaction; consider the current scheme information alongside your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs and ability to tolerate loss.
How often is a mutual fund risk-o-meter evaluated, and when is it published?
SEBI’s Master Circular calls for monthly evaluation. The risk-o-meter is disclosed with the scheme portfolio on the AMC and AMFI websites within 10 calendar days after month-end.
What if the notice says the benchmark risk-o-meter changed?
Check whether the notice concerns the benchmark, the scheme, or both. Keep the two labels separate when reviewing the documents; a benchmark change alone should not be mistaken for a change in the scheme’s own risk-o-meter.
Where can I see how often a fund’s risk-o-meter changed?
Mutual funds disclose the scheme’s risk level as of March 31 and the number of times it changed during that financial year. That annual count shows frequency, but does not explain why the changes occurred.
Should I consult an adviser if I am unsure whether the scheme still suits me?
Yes. SEBI’s Master Circular advises investors who are unclear about a product’s suitability to consult a financial adviser. An adviser can help assess the scheme in light of your circumstances; no named provider is endorsed here.
The Bottom Line
Treat a risk-o-meter change as a reason to check—not as a command to transact. Verify the Notice cum Addendum, distinguish the scheme label from its benchmark’s, compare the dated portfolio and reassess personal fit. If you remain unsure about suitability, consult a financial adviser.
