If rising prices are making your budget harder to manage, start with your own recent spending—not the national inflation rate. List your income, bills, due dates, and variable costs; identify where the shortfall is; make a near-term plan around the consequences of missed payments; and contact creditors or service providers before you fall behind. Then check for local or federal assistance and consider reputable credit counseling if debt is becoming difficult to manage.
Why the inflation rate may not match your household’s bills
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures price changes across a broad basket of goods and services. Your household’s experience depends on what you buy, how often you buy it, and which costs have changed. A family facing a jump in energy costs, for example, may feel more pressure than the national average suggests; another household may spend relatively little in that category.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that, in June 2026, the all-items CPI-U was 3.5% higher than a year earlier and 0.4% lower on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis. Over the year ending June 2026, food at home rose 2.7%, shelter rose 3.3%, and energy rose 15.7%. These are national urban-consumer averages, not a forecast of your household’s bills. See the BLS June 2026 CPI release. The BLS also explains that household spending patterns differ, so individual experiences of price changes differ. Read the BLS CPI questions and answers.
How to find the pressure points in your budget
Gather recent records
Review the last few months of bank and credit-card transactions, bills, and payment notices. Write down take-home income and the amount and due date for recurring expenses, including housing, utilities, insurance, transportation, minimum debt payments, and other obligations. Add variable costs such as groceries, fuel, and household supplies using what you actually spent.

Look for recurring increases, one-time expenses, fees, and bills that have become harder to cover. A simple worksheet or spreadsheet is enough; you do not need to buy a budgeting product. The CFPB’s bill-planning materials can help you list bills and assess the consequences of missing payments. Use the CFPB bill-prioritization worksheet.
National averages can provide context, but they are not personal targets. In 2024, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed average consumer-unit spending grew 1.8% from 2023 while prices rose 2.9%; real spending fell 1.1%. Housing accounted for 33.4% of average spending that year. These are historical national averages, not a recommended budget for your household. See the BLS 2024 consumer expenditure release.

How do you decide which bill to pay first?
There is no universal bill-payment order. Consider what could happen if each payment is late or missed, how soon that consequence could occur, and whether the expense affects housing, your ability to work, insurance, utilities, or a legal obligation. Also check account terms for due dates, late fees, and other consequences. Do not simply pay whichever collector contacts you most often; the CFPB recommends weighing the consequences of nonpayment. Review the CFPB guidance on prioritizing bills.
If available cash cannot cover everything, make a short-term plan based on your own obligations and risks. Record what you can pay and when, and identify bills for which you need to discuss options. A plan that is workable for one household may not be safe for another because housing arrangements, work needs, insurance, legal obligations, and account terms differ.

What to do if you may miss a payment
Contact the creditor or service provider before the payment is missed if possible. Explain the situation plainly, say what amount you can afford and when, and ask whether any options are available. Get the terms of any arrangement clearly, including its duration and what you must do to keep it in effect.
If you cannot pay a credit-card bill
The CFPB advises cardholders to contact the issuer promptly, explain why they cannot make the minimum payment, state how much they can afford and when they expect to resume normal payments, and ask about options. Do not wait until a debt-relief company promises a solution. Be wary of claims that credit-card debt will disappear and of upfront fees. Read the CFPB’s guidance on credit-card bills.

Where to look for assistance
Check whether support is available for food, housing, utilities, unemployment, or other financial hardship. USAGov’s financial-hardship guide is a starting point for finding relevant programs. Eligibility, application steps, and timing vary by program and location, so confirm details with the agency responsible for administering the assistance. Explore USAGov help with bills.
Check assistance options before taking on expensive debt to cover basic needs. If you apply, keep track of requested documents, deadlines, and any decision or follow-up instructions.
When to consider credit counseling
If the gap persists or debt payments are becoming unmanageable, a credit counseling organization may help you review your budget, discuss debt-management options, or attend financial workshops. Before signing up, ask what services are included, what they cost, and what the plan requires. Check the organization’s reputation and read the terms carefully; a proposed plan’s usefulness depends in part on whether creditors accept it. The CFPB explains what credit counselors do and what to consider when choosing one. Learn about credit counseling from the CFPB.
