In January 2012, a hacker using the name 0xOmar claimed to have published hundreds of thousands of Israeli credit-card records. Israeli issuers and officials reported far fewer affected cards after reviewing the data. Contemporary accounts pointed to intrusions at internet and merchant-related sites—not a breach of Israeli banks or card-company systems. The hackers’ claimed Saudi identity and the full scope of the leak were not independently verified.
What happened?
On January 3, 2012, AFP reported that 0xOmar, who claimed to speak for a group called Group-XP, said 400,000 Israeli card details had been published online. That figure was the hacker’s claim, not a count validated by issuers. After reviewing the posted data, card firms identified 14,000 valid cards, AFP reported. Israel Credit Cards-Cal CEO Israel David said the identified cards were being removed from the system. AFP’s January 3 report.
The incident involved further postings. On January 6, AFP reported that the hacker said he had posted details of 11,000 cards; Israel’s three major card companies counted 6,050 affected cards in that posting. AFP also said the hacker’s post claimed to include other card records and information taken from contractor firms. Those additional claims were attributed to the hacker, not independently confirmed. AFP’s January 6 report.
Later accounts described larger cumulative estimates than the count for a single posting. On January 10, the Associated Press reported Israeli officials’ estimate that about 21,000 active accounts had been compromised in all. A February report from Israel Hayom put card companies’ estimate closer to 15,000 than to the hacker’s 400,000; that page was later updated on October 23, 2012. The accounts differ in date, scope, and method, so they do not establish one definitive total.

How many accounts were actually affected?
The best-supported answer is that contemporary issuer and official estimates were in the thousands to roughly 21,000 active accounts—not the 400,000 records claimed by the hacker. The figures should remain attributed because the reports do not provide a single independently verified count covering every release.
| Report and scope | Reported figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 0xOmar’s initial claim, January 3, 2012 | 400,000 | Records the hacker said had been published; AFP reported issuer review identified 14,000 valid cards. AFP. |
| Issuer review of the initial posting, January 3, 2012 | 14,000 | Valid cards identified by card firms, as reported by AFP. AFP. |
| Subsequent posting, January 6, 2012 | 11,000 claimed; 6,050 counted | The hacker’s stated number versus the count attributed to the three major card companies, as reported by AFP. AFP. |
| Overall active accounts, January 10, 2012 | About 21,000 | Israeli officials’ cumulative estimate, reported by AP. Associated Press. |
| Issuer estimate reported February 20, 2012 | Closer to 15,000 | Israel Hayom’s account of the card companies’ estimate; the page shows an October 23, 2012 update. Israel Hayom. |
These are not directly interchangeable totals: one is a hacker’s claimed dataset, others count valid cards in particular postings, and the AP figure is an official estimate of active accounts overall. AP also said it could not independently verify the hackers’ claims.

Were Israeli banks or card companies hacked?
Contemporary issuer statements and reporting said no. Isracard CEO Dov Kotler told AFP, “This was the result of a break-in to Internet sites in Israel.” He said banks and card companies had not been breached. AFP, January 3, 2012.
Israel Hayom later described preliminary findings that the compromised sites belonged to businesses and suppliers processing online or telephone transactions, rather than bank or card-company websites. That reporting indicates a merchant- or supplier-side exposure of card data, not evidence that the financial institutions’ own systems were penetrated. Israel Hayom, February 20, 2012.

What information was reportedly exposed, and how did issuers respond?
AFP’s January 6 account said the posted material reportedly included personal information beyond card details, including email addresses, passwords, and identification numbers. The same account described those contents as part of the hacker’s post; it did not independently establish that every claimed category was present in the full dataset. AFP.
Issuers took protective steps at the time. Israel Credit Cards-Cal said the valid cards identified from the initial data were being removed from its system. The AP reported that banks canceled and reissued cards, while Israel Hayom said suspect cards were blocked. These were historical responses to the 2012 incident, not current instructions or issuer guidance. AP; Israel Hayom.

Was there a retaliatory breach of Saudi bank customers?
A separate report alleged that Israeli hackers had obtained Saudi customers’ financial details. AP reported that Talaat Hafez, secretary-general of the media office in Saudi Arabia’s banking authority, denied that report and said officials had received no customer breach reports. The article attributed Hafez’s quotation through Saudi newspaper Sabq.org; the cited reporting does not establish a retaliatory breach. Associated Press, January 10, 2012.
What is known about the hackers’ identity?
The reports identify the online persona as 0xOmar and describe the person as claiming affiliation with Group-XP and a Saudi identity. They do not independently verify that identity, the group affiliation, or a technical link between identified individuals in Saudi Arabia and the intrusions. The nationality attribution in the headline should therefore be read as a claim made at the time, not as independently established attribution.
