If your trade says pending, your order disappeared, or the app says it filled but your shares or cash do not match, do not place the order again until the broker confirms what happened. An app status alone does not establish whether an order reached the market or executed. Check the firm’s order and account records, preserve a timeline, and ask the broker in writing to explain or correct the discrepancy.
First, establish what the broker’s records show
Sign in through the firm’s official website or app and compare the order details with your confirmations, current positions, cash balance, and latest statement. Contact the broker promptly using contact information from its official website or your account statement—not a phone number or link in a suspicious message. FINRA advises investors to question transactions they do not understand or did not authorize promptly (FINRA: File a Complaint).

Ask the firm to verify in writing whether the order was accepted, rejected, still open, partially filled, canceled, or executed. Request the relevant event times and time zone, filled quantity, price, fees, and any cancellation or correction. Ask how the order activity relates to changes in your cash and positions, and which account record is authoritative. There is no broker-independent status vocabulary or reconciliation procedure established for every platform, so the firm’s records and account agreement matter.

If the original order is still open or has partially filled, a second order could create an unintended position or additional exposure.

Preserve evidence and build a timeline
Save dated screenshots or downloads before records change or disappear. Keep copies of the order ticket and status, confirmations, relevant statement pages, account balances, and messages with support. Record the security, buy or sell side, requested quantity, order type, order ID, displayed status, submission time and time zone, and any later status changes.
For calls, note the representative’s name, date and time, and what was discussed; keep copies of written complaints and correspondence. FINRA recommends keeping written notes of conversations and retaining complaint records (FINRA: File a Complaint). If you submit materials to the SEC, send copies of relevant documents rather than originals (SEC: Investor Complaints – Investor Bulletin).

Compare the order, confirmation, and account ledger
Put your records beside the broker’s written explanation and check the details that connect an order to the resulting account activity:
- Order identity and terms: order ID, security, buy or sell side, requested quantity, and order type.
- Order events: each reported status, its timestamp and time zone, and whether the order was canceled, corrected, or left open.
- Execution details: quantity filled versus requested, execution price, and fees shown on the confirmation.
- Account entries: cash and position changes associated with the order.
- Other explanations: any corporate action or other account adjustment the firm says affected the records.
If the confirmation or statement conflicts with the order history, ask the firm to identify the discrepancy and provide corrected account records if an error occurred. FINRA advises raising errors on trade confirmations and brokerage statements promptly in writing (FINRA: It Pays to Pay Attention to Your Brokerage Account Statements).

Send a concise written discrepancy notice
State what you expected, what each record currently shows, when you submitted the order, and what support has told you. Include the order ID and attach copies of relevant records. Ask for a written explanation of the order lifecycle and ledger entries, and specify any correction you believe is needed. If the issue involves a financial loss or a trade you did not authorize, FINRA recommends complaining to the firm in writing and keeping a copy (FINRA: File a Complaint).
Escalate within the firm if support does not resolve it
If frontline support gives inconsistent answers, does not respond, or says a correction was made but it never appears in your account records, ask for the branch manager or the firm’s compliance department. Keep the escalation and response in writing where possible. Request written verification and an updated confirmation or statement if the firm corrects an entry. FINRA identifies unresponsiveness and promised corrections missing from account records as reasons to document and escalate a complaint (FINRA: File a Complaint).

Consider a regulator complaint or formal dispute route
If the firm does not resolve the issue, the appropriate next step depends on the firm, the conduct, and the dispute. FINRA’s complaint program handles complaints against brokerage firms and their employees; if a matter is outside FINRA’s jurisdiction, it may be referred to another regulator, which can delay an investigation (FINRA: File a Complaint).

The SEC is not your attorney or personal representative and generally does not report on confidential investigations. State securities regulators may also be an option. The SEC bulletin discusses possible dispute-resolution options, including courts, arbitration, and mediation; for a material unresolved loss, a securities-law attorney or law-school dispute clinic may be worth considering (SEC: Investor Complaints – Investor Bulletin).

Distinguish a platform problem from possible fraud
An execution delay or records mismatch does not, by itself, establish fraud or show that AI caused the problem. But if you see unfamiliar trades or unexplained cash or securities movements, contact the firm immediately, say that you did not authorize the activity, and follow its official account-security process.
Be especially cautious if a supposed AI trading service promises guaranteed returns, displays fictitious profits, or demands an advance payment to release funds. Stop communicating with suspected scammers, do not send more money, verify investment providers through official SEC channels, and report suspected fraud. The SEC’s September 29, 2026 update describes allegations involving supposed AI-generated trading signals, fake profits, and withdrawals conditioned on advance fees; those allegations concern specific alleged schemes, not ordinary broker execution delays (SEC: Charges in alleged investment fraud schemes).
What AI does—and does not—tell you about the dispute
FINRA’s June 27, 2024 Regulatory Notice 24-09 says its rules and securities laws apply when member firms use generative AI or similar technologies just as they do when firms use other tools. The notice discusses firm supervision and governance concerns, including model risk, data privacy and integrity, and reliability and accuracy (FINRA Regulatory Notice 24-09). It does not establish that AI caused an individual order failure, create a special consumer claim, or provide a separate complaint channel.

They do not establish a universal response deadline, common status labels, settlement timing, or technical cause for a particular reconciliation problem. Your firm, broker or custodian, asset, account agreement, and facts can affect the process and available remedies.
