What to Do When a UPI Payment Is Debited but the Recipient Isn’t Credited

If a UPI transfer is debited but the recipient’s account is not credited, check the app status and contact the participating bank. RBI sets a T+1-day reversal limit for this funds-transfer case.

If your bank account shows a UPI debit but the recipient has not received the money, check the transaction status in the app you used and raise a grievance with the participating bank. For a UPI funds transfer that cannot be credited to the beneficiary, RBI rules set an auto-reversal limit of T+1 day, with compensation of ₹100 per day for delay beyond that limit. T means the calendar date of the transaction—not the next business day. RBI’s failed-transaction rules distinguish this case from a merchant payment awaiting confirmation, which has a different timeline.

First, confirm whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment

The applicable deadline depends on what you were trying to do. A payment to another person’s bank account is a funds transfer. A payment to a shop or other merchant is a merchant transaction, even if you initiated it by scanning a UPI QR code. The QR code alone does not determine which RBI timeline applies; consider what the payment was for and what outcome is missing.

Situation What has not happened RBI auto-reversal limit Compensation for delay beyond the limit
UPI funds transfer The beneficiary’s bank account was not credited By T+1 day ₹100 per day beyond T+1
UPI merchant payment Confirmation was not received at the merchant location By T+5 days ₹100 per day beyond T+5

These timelines and compensation amounts are from the Reserve Bank of India’s September 20, 2019 circular, effective October 15, 2019. Its T+1 funds-transfer rule is the relevant one when you sent money to a recipient’s account and that account was not credited. Do not apply the merchant-payment T+5 limit to a person-to-person transfer, or the transfer limit to a merchant-confirmation problem. The RBI describes the prescribed turnaround time as the outer limit for resolving failed transactions, not a promise that every case will take that long.

The difference matters because “the recipient hasn’t received it” can describe more than one situation. If you transferred money to a person and their account was not credited, the funds-transfer rule is the one to ask about. If you paid a merchant but the merchant did not receive confirmation, that is the separate merchant-payment case—even if your bank account was debited. Tell the bank what kind of payment you made and what is missing rather than assuming every UPI debit uses the same deadline.

What to do now if the recipient has not been credited

  1. Open the payment app’s transaction history. Select the transaction and check its displayed status, such as pending, failed, or successful. Save the UPI transaction ID or reference number, amount, transaction date, and a record of the debit in your bank account. Screen labels and evidence requirements vary by app and bank. If the app provides a grievance or help option for that transaction, note where to access it.
  2. Ask the recipient to check the account linked to UPI. A notification may be missing even when an account has been credited. Ask them to check the relevant bank account’s transaction history rather than relying only on an SMS or app alert. If they have more than one account, clarify which account was intended to receive the transfer. This helps establish whether the issue is a missing notification or an account that has not been credited.
  3. Raise the issue with the participating bank. Use the grievance or help option in the UPI app, or contact the bank’s customer support through its official channel. Ask the bank to trace the transaction and confirm whether it was credited to the beneficiary or reversed. NPCI identifies a participating bank’s UPI app as a channel to raise or check a transaction grievance and advises contacting the bank if the amount does not reverse. NPCI’s UPI FAQ provides that guidance.
  4. Describe the problem precisely. Say that your account was debited, identify whether the payment was a funds transfer or merchant payment, and report what the app currently shows. Give the transaction reference, amount, date, and debit information so the bank can locate the specific payment. Ask for the transaction’s final status: whether the beneficiary account was credited, or whether the amount is to be reversed. Do not treat a general app message as confirmation of what happened at the recipient bank; ask the bank to trace it.
  5. Track the deadline from the transaction date. For the uncredited funds-transfer case, T is the calendar date of the transaction. T+1 is the following calendar day; it is not one business day after the transaction. For example, if the transaction date is a Tuesday, T+1 is Wednesday. The deadline is an outer limit, so a reversal may happen sooner. There is no single status-screen path or additional universal waiting period for every bank.
  6. Follow up if the reversal or credit has not happened by the applicable limit. Ask the bank for the transaction’s final status and, if the funds-transfer case is delayed beyond T+1, follow up about the applicable compensation. Keep your transaction details and the bank’s complaint or reference number together. If the bank has already given you a response, retain it with the original complaint information so you can explain what remains unresolved.

NPCI’s FAQ addresses both “My UPI transaction has failed but my bank account has been debited” and a transaction showing “Pending” where the amount has been debited and not credited. A pending label is a reason to check and raise the issue, not a basis for assuming the recipient was credited or for promising a particular reversal time. The bank’s trace and the applicable RBI category are what matter.

How the T+1 deadline and ₹100-per-day compensation work

For a UPI funds transfer where your account is debited but the beneficiary’s account cannot be credited, the RBI framework requires the beneficiary bank to auto-reverse the transaction by T+1 day. If the reversal is delayed beyond T+1, the stated compensation is ₹100 per day of delay. T is the calendar date of the transaction, so weekends or a change in business day do not redefine T as a business-day count in the stated rule. The measure is tied to the transaction date, not to the date you first contact customer support.

The RBI calls the prescribed turnaround time “the outer limit for resolution of failed transactions.” That means the limit is the latest prescribed point for the applicable case, not an estimate that tells you exactly when the app will update. A bank or app may show a status before the transaction has been fully established as credited or reversed, so ask the participating bank to trace it if the debit and recipient’s account history do not agree.

The RBI also says that in applicable failed-transaction cases involving financial compensation, it is to be credited to the customer’s account “suo moto,” or automatically, without waiting for a complaint or claim. In practice, keep track of whether the compensation appears and raise a separate follow-up if you believe the prescribed amount is missing. Automatic compensation does not remove the value of documenting the failed transaction and the bank’s response.

  • Stable Base Extended: Allows your book to be more stable on the table.

The rule does not mean every debit that looks unresolved automatically qualifies for compensation. The transaction type matters, and the framework concerns failed transactions not attributable to the customer. Ask the bank to establish the transaction outcome and whether the prescribed reversal rule applies. If the amount is reversed but the applicable compensation is missing, document that separately and ask the bank to review it. The relevant compensation threshold is the end of the applicable TAT: T+1 for the uncredited funds-transfer case, rather than T+5 for a merchant-confirmation case.

Why a merchant payment has a different deadline

A merchant payment is not the same as sending money to a person’s bank account. In the RBI’s separate merchant-payment category, the account has been debited but transaction confirmation has not been received at the merchant location. For that situation, the listed auto-reversal limit is T+5 days and the compensation for delay is ₹100 per day beyond T+5 days. That is five days after the calendar transaction date under the stated timeline, not five business days.

Use this distinction when you contact the bank. If the merchant says it did not receive confirmation, explain that the payment was for a merchant and ask the bank to trace the merchant transaction. If you sent money to an individual and their bank account was not credited, explain that it was a funds transfer and ask about the T+1 rule. A merchant’s lack of confirmation and a beneficiary account’s lack of credit are different missing outcomes, even though both may begin with a debit in your account.

Escalate if the bank does not provide the prescribed redress

Start with the participating bank or the UPI app’s grievance channel because the bank can trace the payment against its transaction records. NPCI recommends contacting the bank if the amount does not reverse and identifies the participating bank’s UPI app as a place to raise or check a UPI grievance. If the prescribed redress is not provided within the applicable turnaround time, the RBI identifies the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme as an escalation route.

Keep the UPI transaction reference, debit evidence, the date you raised the grievance, and any complaint number or response from the bank. These details let you explain which payment is in dispute and what you already asked the bank to do. If you are following up because the money was reversed but compensation appears to be missing, make that distinction clear rather than describing the original debit as still outstanding.

The applicable submission steps and eligibility can depend on the current scheme requirements, so check the RBI’s current complaint guidance before filing. There is no exact universal wait period beyond the applicable TAT or one complaint portal sequence that applies to every case. Follow the current RBI directions and the bank’s grievance instructions; do not assume that a particular app screen or an extra waiting period is required for all customers.

Protect your UPI PIN while seeking help

Do not share your UPI PIN with anyone who says they can reverse, trace, or release the payment. NPCI says not to share the PIN and states that bank customer support will never ask for it. Use only the help or grievance channel in your app or the bank’s official customer-support contact details. A request for your PIN is not a legitimate step in resolving a failed payment.

You can provide transaction identifiers and explain the debit through the bank’s official grievance process; your PIN is not needed to ask the bank to trace a transfer. Be especially careful if someone contacts you claiming to be support and asks you to disclose the PIN as a condition of getting the money back. Stop that conversation and use an official bank or app channel instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

My UPI transaction is pending, and my account was debited. Is there a problem?

A pending status means you should check the transaction and raise or check a grievance through the participating bank or UPI app if the recipient has not been credited. Do not assume from the label alone that the recipient received the money or that a fixed reversal time is guaranteed. For a funds transfer where the beneficiary account cannot be credited, RBI sets an auto-reversal limit of T+1 day, with T as the calendar transaction date.

How long does a UPI transfer take to reverse if the recipient’s account is not credited?

For the uncredited UPI funds-transfer case, RBI’s limit is by T+1 day, where T is the calendar date of the transaction. This is not one business day. Contact the participating bank to trace the payment if the status is unclear or the amount has not reversed by the applicable limit.

Do I need to claim the ₹100-per-day compensation?

RBI says applicable compensation is to be credited automatically, without waiting for a customer complaint or claim. If a qualifying failed funds transfer is delayed beyond T+1 and the compensation does not appear, document the transaction and follow up with the bank. Not every unresolved-looking debit automatically qualifies; the transaction category and whether the failure is attributable to the customer matter.

Does the T+1 deadline apply to a UPI payment to a shop?

Not in the same way. The T+1 rule applies to a funds transfer when the beneficiary’s bank account is not credited. For a separate merchant-payment case where the account is debited but confirmation is not received at the merchant location, RBI lists T+5 days for auto-reversal and ₹100 per day beyond T+5.

Who should I contact first about a debited but uncredited UPI transfer?

Start with the participating bank through the UPI app’s grievance option or the bank’s official customer-support channel. Provide the transaction reference, amount, date, and debit information, and ask the bank to confirm whether the payment was credited or reversed. If prescribed redress is not provided within the applicable turnaround time, RBI identifies the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme as an escalation route.

Will bank support ask me for my UPI PIN to reverse the payment?

No. NPCI says not to share your UPI PIN and states that bank customer support will never ask for it. Use official bank or app grievance channels and do not disclose the PIN to anyone claiming to resolve the failed payment.

The Bottom Line

For a UPI transfer debited from your account but not credited to the recipient, check the app status, save the transaction details, and ask the participating bank to trace it. RBI’s applicable limit is auto-reversal by T+1 calendar day, with ₹100 per day for qualifying delay beyond T+1; a merchant-payment confirmation problem follows a separate T+5 rule. Escalate through the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme if prescribed redress is not provided, and never share your UPI PIN.
