If one stock has grown into a large part of your portfolio, first measure how much your financial future depends on that one company. Then choose whether to reduce the exposure by directing new money elsewhere, selling some shares, or—if it fits your goals—donating appreciated shares to a qualified charity. The right route depends on your full financial picture, taxes, employee-stock rules, and how quickly you want to reduce the risk; there is no universal concentration limit or sale schedule.
Why a large single-stock position deserves attention
A stock in one company exposes you to that issuer’s fortunes. If the company struggles, the shares can fall even while other parts of the market perform differently. A large position can therefore make your overall financial outcome unusually dependent on one business. That risk may be compounded when the company is also your employer: your income and some of your investments may then be tied to the same organization.

Diversification means spreading investments across asset categories and across different investments within each category. It can reduce dependence on a single issuer, but it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses. The SEC’s Investor.gov guide to asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing says there is no single asset-allocation model that is right for every financial goal. A suitable allocation depends on the investor’s circumstances and objectives, not on a universal percentage of one stock.
The SEC’s beginner material uses at least a dozen carefully selected individual stocks as an educational guide to diversification. That is not a guaranteed threshold, a prescribed minimum, or a personal recommendation. Investors may find it easier to diversify through funds, but the fund’s name alone does not establish how diversified it is.

How much of your portfolio is actually in the stock?
Start with a complete inventory rather than looking only at one brokerage account. List the stock’s current value and compare it with the investments and other assets you want included in your allocation decision. Consider whether the shares are held in a taxable account or a tax-advantaged account, and whether you also own the company through an employee plan or another account. If the company is your employer, note that your employment income is another financial connection to it, even though it is not an investment holding.
Next, identify the purpose of the money and the amount of company-specific risk you are willing to accept. A concentrated position may have different implications for someone who expects to rely on the assets soon than for someone with a different goal and time horizon. The relevant decision is not simply whether the stock has risen or fallen; it is whether your current exposure still fits your overall plan.
Market movements can change portfolio weights even when you make no trades. Rebalancing means restoring a chosen allocation after those weights drift. The SEC advises investors to consider whether their chosen rebalancing method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. Selling is one possible method, but directing new contributions elsewhere may also change the balance over time.
Ways to reduce concentration
There is no need to treat “sell everything” and “do nothing” as the only choices. The options below differ in how quickly they reduce exposure, how much control they offer over timing, and what tax or transaction consequences they may create. They are planning approaches, not individualized recommendations.

| Approach | What it can do | Key tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Direct new savings and dividends elsewhere | Can gradually reduce the stock’s share of the portfolio as other holdings accumulate. | The original shares remain exposed to company-specific risk while the change takes effect; the process may take time. |
| Sell portions over time | Moves the portfolio toward a chosen allocation in stages and spreads sale timing. | Risk remains on unsold shares. Each sale may realize a gain or loss, and lot selection and trading costs matter. |
| Sell a larger portion at once | Can reduce issuer exposure more quickly. | A larger sale may realize more taxable gain in one year and bring timing or transaction-cost considerations into focus. |
| Donate appreciated shares to a qualified charity | May align with an existing charitable goal while transferring shares rather than selling them first. | Eligibility, holding period, valuation, recipient status, deduction limits, and substantiation affect the tax treatment; a deduction or tax savings is not guaranteed. |
| Invest sale proceeds in a broad fund | A suitable mutual fund or ETF may provide exposure to multiple investments. | Check actual holdings, industry concentration, overlap with what you already own, and costs. Not every fund is broad. |
Routing new contributions and dividends to other investments can be a gradual way to change portfolio weights without immediately selling shares. That approach does not remove the existing stock’s risk; it changes the relative size of the position only as other assets build. If the exposure is already more than you are comfortable carrying, waiting for new money to dilute it may not address the concern quickly enough.
A staged sale gives you flexibility to decide the amount and timing of each transaction. It also leaves part of the position exposed between sales, and no schedule can ensure a favorable share price. A larger sale can reduce concentration sooner, but a taxable sale may bring a larger realized gain into the tax year. Compare the amount of risk reduced now with the potential tax and transaction costs, rather than assuming that one approach is always better.
Choose a destination that is diversified in practice
After selling, proceeds still need a role in the overall portfolio. A broad mutual fund or ETF can hold investments across companies and industries, which may help avoid replacing one large single-company position with another narrow exposure. But “fund” and “ETF” do not automatically mean diversified: some funds focus on one sector, hold relatively few securities, or track a single stock.
Review the fund’s underlying holdings and how they overlap with your other investments. A fund that owns many securities may still be concentrated in a particular industry, and buying it may add little diversification if your other holdings already have similar exposure. The SEC’s Investor.gov ETF education materials describe ETFs as varying in their holdings; check the actual portfolio rather than relying on the label. Also consider the fund’s costs as part of the decision.

There is no requirement that proceeds go into a fund. The important point is to assess the destination as part of the whole allocation, including its asset category, concentration, and overlap with existing investments. Diversification is about the exposures you end up holding, not the number of account statements or investment products you own.
Estimate the tax effect before selling in a taxable account
For shares in a taxable account, gather the adjusted basis and acquisition date for each tax lot before deciding what to sell. Do not assume that shares with the same ticker have the same basis: they may have been acquired at different prices or under different circumstances. A sale can realize a gain or a loss, and the taxable result generally depends on the difference between the amount realized and the adjusted basis.
The IRS explains that a seller who adequately identifies shares and properly communicates that identification to the broker generally uses the basis of the identified shares. If the shares are not adequately identified, first-in, first-out (FIFO) generally applies, subject to exceptions. Ask the broker how to make and confirm a specific-lot instruction before a trade if you intend to use one; a selection that is not properly communicated may not determine the basis used.

Before acting, assemble a lot-level record with acquisition dates, adjusted basis, and any relevant employer-plan documents or tax forms. Then compare possible sale amounts and lots with the allocation change you want. Consider transaction costs and tax consequences alongside the risk reduction; do not let the tax result alone obscure the portfolio exposure you are trying to manage.

“Company stock” can come from several arrangements, and their tax events are not interchangeable. Determine whether the shares came from an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), an incentive stock option (ISO), a nonstatutory stock option, restricted stock, or another award. The plan documents, purchase or exercise records, vesting history, and tax forms can help establish what you own and how it was acquired.
IRS materials on statutory and nonstatutory options and ESPPs explain that a sale under some employee plans can involve both ordinary compensation income and capital gain or loss. Special holding periods can affect the treatment. A sale’s reported basis may also need to be checked against the award records and tax forms; do not assume the brokerage display alone captures every relevant tax item.

When donating appreciated shares may fit
A charitable gift of appreciated stock is worth considering only if giving to charity is already part of your goals. IRS guidance says noncash contributions to qualified organizations may generally be deductible at fair market value, but adjustments and percentage-of-adjusted-gross-income limits can apply. Publication 526 discusses capital-gain property and qualified appreciated stock, including recipient categories, holding periods, and exceptions. Whether a particular contribution qualifies, and how it is valued and substantiated, depends on the details.
A gift is not a way to retain ownership of the shares while receiving a deduction. Donor-advised funds are separately identified accounts maintained by sponsoring charities. The IRS states that once a donor makes a contribution, the sponsoring organization has legal control of the assets, while the donor retains advisory privileges over grant recommendations. A contribution may be subject to additional rules, and it does not automatically produce a tax benefit that is better than selling.
Confirm that the recipient is a qualified organization and review the holding period, valuation, deduction limits, and substantiation requirements before transferring shares. If the contribution is substantial or the rules are unclear, get tax advice specific to the gift. Do not donate solely because a tax deduction is presumed: the charitable purpose and the transfer’s full consequences should both make sense to you.

A practical decision sequence
- Inventory the exposure. Add up the stock across relevant accounts and employee plans, and consider the company’s role in your employment income.
- Set the allocation you can live with. Decide how much issuer-specific risk fits your goals and circumstances. Do not treat an online percentage or the SEC’s educational stock-count example as a personal target.
- Choose the pace of change. If gradual change is acceptable, new contributions and dividends can go elsewhere; if you want to reduce risk sooner, compare staged and larger sales.
- Map out tax lots and award rules. For taxable shares, check adjusted basis and acquisition dates. For employee shares, identify the award type and any holding-period or reporting issues.
- Decide where proceeds or new money will go. Review actual holdings, concentration, overlap, and costs rather than assuming any fund will diversify the portfolio.
- Check transaction and tax consequences before execution. Consider fees, realized gains or losses, applicable tax rules, and any employer-plan procedures. If a charitable gift is under consideration, verify recipient and deduction requirements first.
- Review the allocation periodically. Market movements can shift weights over time. Rebalancing may restore a chosen allocation, but consider its costs and tax consequences before using it.
When individualized help is useful
Professional help can be valuable when a position is large relative to your finances, the stock came from multiple employee awards, the tax lots are unclear, or a proposed sale or charitable contribution has significant tax consequences. An adviser or tax professional may help coordinate portfolio risk, tax details, and employee equity, but the right scope depends on the problem you need solved.
Before engaging anyone, verify their credentials, how they are compensated, potential conflicts of interest, and what services they will actually provide. You can also ask how they would evaluate concentration, tax lots, and award-specific rules without assuming that one firm or strategy is suitable for every investor. This article describes US federal investor and tax guidance; state, local, and non-US rules may differ.
Quick Recap
What to avoid
- Waiting for a particular price as the only plan. A price target does not change the underlying concentration while you wait, and no sale schedule guarantees a favorable market outcome.
- Using a tax bill as the only decision rule. Taxes matter, but keeping an exposure solely to avoid realizing a gain can leave the portfolio risk unaddressed.
- Assuming one fund label solves the problem. A narrow or single-stock ETF may not diversify the position; check holdings and overlap.
- Trading employee shares without understanding the award. Different plan types can have different tax events, reporting, and holding periods.
- Assuming charitable gifts guarantee savings. Deductibility, valuation, limits, holding period, and recipient qualification all matter, and donated assets are no longer legally controlled by the donor.
