To diversify beyond Nvidia and other semiconductor stocks, first map your actual exposure across individual companies, sectors, asset classes and geographies—including the holdings hidden inside mutual funds and ETFs. Then decide whether changes fit your time horizon, risk tolerance and desired allocation. Owning several funds or stocks does not necessarily reduce risk if they hold many of the same companies or remain concentrated in technology.
What diversification can—and cannot—do
Diversification means spreading investments across and within asset classes rather than relying on a small number of similar holdings. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification, identifies stocks, bonds and cash as asset types and describes spreading stock investments across different industry sectors as one way to diversify.

The aim is to avoid making the outcome of an entire portfolio depend too heavily on one company, industry or kind of investment. Holding several semiconductor companies may spread company-specific exposure, but it can leave substantial industry exposure. Adding funds does not automatically solve that problem: a fund may be narrowly focused, or different funds may own many of the same companies.

Why a fund’s label is not enough
A mutual fund or ETF can hold many securities while still concentrating exposure in one sector or a small group of large companies. The SEC’s Investor.gov page states: “A mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” A broad-sounding label is not a substitute for checking what the fund actually owns.
Even a fund that covers a large market can have sizable positions in its biggest constituents. As a dated illustration, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the S&P 500 had 503 constituents on August 31, 2026. Its ten largest constituents represented 37.8% of index weight, the largest constituent represented 8.1%, and information technology represented 37.9%. Nvidia appeared among the index’s largest constituents. These figures describe the index on that date; they are not current portfolio weights for every fund that tracks it, and they say nothing about your own portfolio unless you hold a relevant investment.
This is why “I own several funds” and “I own a diversified portfolio” are not equivalent statements. The useful question is what exposures those funds add after accounting for existing stocks and other funds.
Map your portfolio before changing it
Start with a complete inventory. Include direct stock holdings and the current holdings of every mutual fund and ETF. Then organize the information so that an investment held in multiple places does not disappear from view. The SEC advises investors to check a fund’s top holdings and make sure the holdings differ in ways that provide the diversification they seek.
- List direct positions. Record each stock and its share of the portfolio. Pay particular attention to semiconductor companies and technology exposure, but do not stop there.
- Look through each fund. Review its current holdings and top positions. Note any companies already held directly or through another fund. Fund names or category labels alone do not reveal overlap.
- Group exposures. Summarize the portfolio by company, sector, asset class and geography. A holding can contribute to more than one view: for example, a stock has both a company identity and a sector exposure.
- Check concentration and overlap. Ask whether one company, a group of related companies, one sector, or one market dominates the result. Two funds with similar top holdings may add less diversification than their number of tickers suggests.
- Write down what you want to change. Be specific about the exposure you are trying to reduce or add. “Own more funds” is not an exposure goal; “reduce reliance on one sector” or “add a different asset class” describes a portfolio question to investigate.
This inventory is a snapshot, not a permanent answer. Fund holdings and portfolio weights can change, so use the current fund documents and holdings information when evaluating a possible change.
It can help to separate the inventory into two views. The first is what you own directly; the second is what you own indirectly through funds. Then combine them when assessing exposure. A company that appears in a direct stock position and in several funds is still one underlying company exposure, even though it appears in multiple account lines. Likewise, a fund that owns many companies may still add little variety if its largest holdings resemble those already in the portfolio.

Compare the ways a portfolio can broaden
There is no universal replacement for semiconductor stocks. The relevant comparison is whether a potential holding changes the portfolio’s exposure in a way that fits your circumstances. The following framework distinguishes the kinds of changes to examine without prescribing a particular fund or allocation.
| Possible direction | What it may add | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Stocks in other sectors | Equity exposure to companies outside the sectors already dominant in the portfolio. | Actual sector weights, top companies and overlap with existing stocks and funds; a different company is not necessarily a different risk exposure. |
| Stocks covering a broader market or geography | Exposure beyond a narrow industry or market scope, depending on the fund’s actual mandate. | Which market and geography it covers, its current holdings, concentration and overlap. Confirm the scope in current fund documents. |
| Bonds | Exposure to an asset class other than stocks. | The fund or security’s strategy, risks, fees and how the exposure fits your time horizon and risk tolerance. |
| Cash | A cash allocation rather than additional stock or bond exposure. | Whether the amount and role fit your circumstances and desired allocation; cash is an asset category, not a substitute for assessing the portfolio as a whole. |
| Another mutual fund or ETF | Potential access to a collection of investments through one holding. | Whether the product is broad or narrow, its actual holdings, overlap, fees and risks. The fund wrapper alone does not establish diversification. |
The table describes questions to ask, not a ranking. A change can reduce one concentration while introducing another. For instance, adding a sector-specific fund may add companies but deepen industry exposure. Adding another fund with the same major holdings as existing positions may leave the underlying concentration largely unchanged.
Think of each candidate holding as a proposed change to the whole portfolio, not as a standalone purchase. Ask what it contributes that is missing, what it duplicates, and what new risks or costs accompany it. A geography label or index name can help you begin the review, but it does not settle the question: confirm the fund’s mandate and current holdings in its prospectus and other current documents. No particular region or fund is inherently the right answer for every investor.
Use a repeatable fund-comparison checklist
Before changing a portfolio, compare the actual exposure of the candidate with what you already own. Investor.gov and the SEC’s investor education materials emphasize holdings and diversification; the factors below also follow the comparison framework investors need to apply to an individual fund.
- Asset class: Does the holding add exposure beyond stocks, such as bonds or cash, or does the portfolio remain entirely in equities? Whether a different asset class fits depends on your circumstances.
- Sector and company exposure: Would the holding reduce reliance on semiconductors or technology, or add more companies with similar exposure? Review both sector weights and largest companies.
- Holdings overlap: Compare the fund’s top holdings with direct positions and other funds. Count exposure through all routes rather than treating each fund as a separate, independent position.
- Geography and index scope: Identify the markets and geographies the fund covers. Check its current prospectus and holdings; a name alone may not tell you the complete scope.
- Fees and trading costs: Review ongoing expenses and the costs associated with buying or selling. A fund’s investment exposure is only one part of the decision.
- Risks and ETF pricing: Read the product’s risk information. For an ETF, remember that its market price can differ from its net asset value (NAV).
- Personal fit: Consider whether the proposed exposure is consistent with your time horizon and risk tolerance. A portfolio allocation cannot be selected responsibly from a sector headline alone.
These checks help distinguish a genuinely different exposure from a new wrapper around familiar risks. No specific fund, ticker or percentage allocation is established here as suitable for every investor.
For an ETF, the market price is the price at which shares trade, while NAV reflects the value of the underlying assets per share. Since the trading price can differ from NAV, review that risk along with the fund’s strategy and expenses rather than assuming the quoted price always matches the underlying value. For any fund, compare current documents and holdings—not just a name, past performance, or a short description.

Set an allocation before deciding how to rebalance
Asset allocation is the way a portfolio is divided among asset types. The right mix is personal: the SEC points to time horizon and risk tolerance as relevant considerations, rather than prescribing one target for all investors. Recent performance, a company’s prominence or a desire to react to a market story is not, on its own, a complete basis for selecting an allocation.
Once you have a desired allocation, rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward it when the actual mix has moved away. The SEC describes several possible methods: selling assets that have become overweight, directing new purchases toward underweights, or changing where ongoing contributions go. It also describes periodic and threshold-based approaches as examples. It does not prescribe a schedule that suits everyone.
Choose a method deliberately
- Direct new purchases or contributions to underweights. This can change the portfolio’s mix without selling an overweight holding. Whether it is enough depends on the size of the imbalance and the contributions available.
- Sell part of an overweight position. This changes the existing holdings directly. Before selling appreciated investments, investigate tax consequences for your account and jurisdiction; those consequences depend on individual facts.
- Use a planned review approach. A periodic review or a review when a chosen threshold is crossed can provide a process for checking allocation. The appropriate interval or threshold is not universal and should be chosen in light of your circumstances.
Rebalancing is a method for restoring a chosen mix, not a forecast about Nvidia, semiconductors or any other investment. The first decision is what allocation makes sense for you; the method for returning to it comes after.

A target allocation is the desired mix of holdings; rebalancing is the process used when the actual mix drifts away from that target. Periodic reviews and threshold-based reviews are possible approaches, not requirements or one-size-fits-all rules. Whatever method is chosen, compare the result with the allocation you intended to maintain rather than with a recent market winner.
A practical sequence for evaluating a change
- Define the concern. Identify whether it is exposure to one company, semiconductors, technology, equities generally, or some combination. Different concerns call for different comparisons.
- Measure the current portfolio. Include direct positions and look through mutual funds and ETFs. Summarize by company, sector, asset class and geography, and note where holdings overlap.
- Decide what mix you are aiming for. Consider your time horizon and risk tolerance. Do not treat a general example or another investor’s allocation as an individualized target.
- Compare possible holdings against the inventory. Check mandate, current holdings, top positions, geographic scope, fees and risks. For an ETF, include the possibility that its market price differs from NAV.
- Choose whether to direct new money, rebalance, or make no change. The SEC’s methods include buying toward underweights, redirecting contributions and selling overweight assets. The appropriate choice depends on your own situation.
- Check tax implications before a sale. Consider your account and jurisdiction and seek qualified tax advice if needed. No individual tax outcome can be inferred from the fact that a holding has appreciated.
- Review the result against your goal. After a change, check whether company, sector, asset-class and geographic exposures moved in the intended direction. Reassess using current holdings rather than assuming a fund’s exposure stays fixed.
Common mistakes when trying to diversify
Counting funds instead of underlying holdings
Owning multiple ETFs or mutual funds does not ensure that the portfolio is diversified. If their holdings substantially overlap, they may provide similar exposure. Look through the funds and combine their contributions with direct stock positions.
Assuming a broad-market label means low concentration
A fund tracking a broad index can still have meaningful exposure to its largest constituents or a large sector. The S&P 500 figures from August 31, 2026 illustrate that point for that index on that date; they should not be applied to every fund, another date or an individual investor’s portfolio.

Adding a sector fund to address sector concentration
A narrow mandate can add companies while increasing concentration in the very kind of exposure an investor hopes to reduce. Check the fund’s actual sector and company exposure before treating it as a diversifier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaking a sale before considering alternatives and taxes
Selling is one rebalancing method, not the only one. Directing future purchases or contributions toward underweights is also an approach described by the SEC. If a sale is under consideration, its tax effect depends on the account and jurisdiction and should be assessed before acting.
Choosing a target from a headline or recent performance
A news story about one company or industry does not reveal an investor’s full allocation, time horizon or tolerance for risk. A portfolio decision requires those details; the information here does not establish a universal percentage to hold in semiconductors, technology, stocks, bonds or cash.
What this guidance can and cannot tell you
This process can help you identify overlapping holdings, see whether a proposed fund changes company, sector, asset-class or geographic exposure, and compare an allocation with your own goals. It cannot determine whether you personally should sell Nvidia or another semiconductor stock, select a particular fund, predict semiconductor performance or calculate the tax effect of a sale. Those questions require information about your portfolio, account, jurisdiction and circumstances that is not provided here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to sell Nvidia to diversify my portfolio?
Not necessarily. Owning Nvidia or other semiconductor shares does not by itself establish that a sale is appropriate. First review direct positions and fund holdings, then assess company, sector and asset-class exposure alongside your time horizon and risk tolerance. Rebalancing can involve selling an overweight holding, but the SEC also describes directing new purchases or ongoing contributions toward underweights.

No. ETFs can be narrowly focused, and different funds may hold many of the same companies. Review each fund’s current holdings and top positions, compare them with your direct stocks and other funds, and assess the combined exposures rather than counting the number of funds.

Can a broad-market fund still be concentrated?
Yes. Broad-market exposure does not guarantee that the largest companies or a particular sector represent only a small share. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that, as of August 31, 2026, the S&P 500’s ten largest constituents made up 37.8% of index weight and information technology represented 37.9%. Those are index figures for that date, not a description of every fund or portfolio.
How often should I rebalance?
There is no single schedule that fits everyone. The SEC describes periodic and threshold-based approaches as examples, and says rebalancing can mean selling overweight assets, buying underweights, or directing ongoing contributions toward underweights. Choose an approach in light of your circumstances and desired allocation.
What should I check before selling appreciated semiconductor shares?
Consider the purpose of the sale, whether another rebalancing method could meet the goal, and the tax implications for your account and jurisdiction. Individual tax consequences depend on facts not established by a general portfolio review, so consider qualified tax advice when needed.
What information should I compare when considering another fund?
Check its asset class, actual sector and company exposures, top holdings, overlap with existing investments, geographic and index scope, fees, risks and—if it is an ETF—the possibility that its market price differs from NAV. Also consider whether the exposure fits your risk tolerance and time horizon.
The Bottom Line
To diversify beyond Nvidia and semiconductor stocks, look through every direct holding and fund, identify overlap, and assess exposure by company, sector, asset class and geography. Compare any possible change with your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, fees and risks. Rebalancing may involve selling, directing new money toward underweights or changing contributions; there is no universal allocation or instruction to sell a particular stock.
