If you can no longer afford a floating-rate loan EMI, contact your lender as early as possible and ask for the revised loan calculation and repayment options in writing. For borrowers in India, RBI directions for covered loans provide for a higher EMI, a longer tenure, a combination of both, or part or full prepayment. A fixed-rate switch may also be offered under the lender’s policy, but it is not guaranteed for every loan. These rules are not universal: the RBI framework applies to specified equated-installment personal loans, not every loan product.
First, confirm what changed and what you owe
A floating-rate reset can change your EMI, the time left to repay, or both. Before choosing a response, ask the lender through an official channel for a written statement showing:
- The benchmark and spread used to set your rate, the revised annualised interest rate, and the reset’s effective date.
- Your current principal outstanding, revised EMI, and number of instalments remaining.
- The revised payoff date and estimated remaining interest under each available option.
- Any switching, administrative, or other applicable charges.
For covered loans, RBI directions require lenders to communicate the effect of an interest-rate reset and provide a quarterly statement showing principal and interest recovered, EMI, number of EMIs remaining, and annualised rate or APR. Compare the lender’s figures with your loan agreement and latest statement. If the numbers do not match, ask the lender to explain the calculation before agreeing to a change. RBI Master Directions, updated October 1, 2025; RBI FAQ, January 10, 2025.
Compare the repayment choices
For loans covered by the RBI directions, a borrower can choose an increase in EMI, a longer tenure, or a combination, and can make part or full prepayment, subject to applicable instructions. Ask the lender to calculate the scenarios against the same outstanding balance and reset date so you can compare monthly affordability, remaining interest and charges, payoff date, exposure to future rate changes, and eligibility.

| Option | What changes | What to request in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Increase the EMI | The periodic payment rises; the repayment period may not need to extend. | New EMI, effective date, payoff date, and total remaining interest. |
| Extend the tenure | More instalments can lower the periodic payment, but the balance remains outstanding longer. | New end date, total remaining interest, maximum permitted term, and confirmation that the schedule does not cause negative amortisation. |
| Combine an EMI increase and tenure extension | The adjustment is shared between payment size and repayment time. | Exact EMI, number of instalments, payoff date, and total remaining cost. |
| Switch to a fixed rate, if offered | The rate structure changes under the lender’s policy and terms. | New rate, duration and conditions, switching charge, and whether further switches are allowed. |
| Make a part or full prepayment | A part-payment reduces the balance; full prepayment repays it. | Minimum amount, timing, how the payment will be allocated, any applicable charge, and the revised schedule or closure amount. |
RBI requires applicable switching and administrative charges to be disclosed transparently in the sanction letter and when such charges change. Its directions also say that extending the tenure of a floating-rate loan must not result in negative amortisation. In practical terms, the revised instalments must not leave unpaid interest being added to the principal in a way that makes the amount owed grow. RBI Master Directions, updated October 1, 2025.
Choose a payment you can sustain, not just the smallest EMI
A longer tenure may ease the monthly strain, but it keeps the debt outstanding for longer and may increase total interest. A higher EMI may reduce the time in debt, but only works if it fits your budget reliably. A combination can balance the two. A fixed-rate switch, when available, changes rate exposure, but its new rate and charges determine whether it suits your circumstances. Do not assume any option will save money: compare the lender’s written payoff date and total remaining cost for each scenario.

If the proposed EMI remains unaffordable, tell the lender what payment you can realistically maintain and ask whether its policy allows another arrangement. Approval is not automatic, and the sources do not establish a universal entitlement to a payment holiday, waiver, or restructuring. Get any approved change and its consequences in writing before relying on it.
Check the rules that apply to your loan
The RBI reset framework is not a blanket rule for all floating-rate borrowing. The FAQ says it applies to equated periodic instalment-based personal loans; the directions also address equated-installment loans with different periodicities. The product, repayment structure, lender, agreement, and jurisdiction matter. Confirm with the lender whether your particular loan falls within the framework before treating an option as a right. A fixed-rate conversion is not automatic. The current directions say a lender may provide this choice under its board-approved policy, which may limit how many times a borrower can switch. Ask whether your loan qualifies, what rate would apply, and what conditions or charges attach to the change. RBI Master Directions, updated October 1, 2025.
Prepayment charges also depend on the loan and borrower. Government guidance says banks cannot levy foreclosure or prepayment penalties on floating-rate term loans to individuals for non-business purposes. That scope should not be generalized to every lender, loan, or borrower; check the current rules that apply to your account and obtain the lender’s charge calculation. Act before a missed payment and keep a record
- Contact the lender before the next due date if possible. Explain that the revised payment is unaffordable and request its available options through an official channel.
- Ask for the reset calculation and written scenarios for a higher EMI, longer tenure, a combination, prepayment, and a fixed-rate switch if offered.
- Compare the monthly payment, total remaining interest and charges, payoff date, and any future rate exposure. Do not agree based only on a lower EMI.
- Keep copies of reset notices, statements, requests, replies, and any agreement to change the repayment schedule.
Do not wait for a delinquency threshold before contacting the lender. The Department of Financial Services describes a term loan as becoming a non-performing asset when principal or interest is overdue for more than 90 days; that is a classification threshold, not a grace period or a recommended time to seek help. Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, Banking page, updated January 23, 2026.
Escalate unresolved service complaints separately
If your concern is poor service by an RBI-regulated entity—for example, an unanswered request or a dispute about how your account was handled—the Department of Financial Services says you may use the RBI Ombudsman mechanism if the entity has not replied within 30 days or its reply is unsatisfactory. This is a route for service complaints; it does not guarantee that the lender must approve a requested EMI reduction, restructuring, or payment holiday.
