Social Security is not projected to stop paying benefits when its reserves run down. Under the Social Security trustees’ 2026 intermediate assumptions, income from taxes and other sources would still cover part of scheduled benefits: 78% of scheduled retirement and survivor benefits when the OASI reserves are projected to deplete in the fourth quarter of 2032. The combined retirement, survivor and disability funds are projected to deplete in 2034, when income would cover 83% of scheduled benefits. Those are nationwide projections under current law—not a prediction of your personal benefit or a guarantee of what Congress will do. The practical response is to check your own estimate, plan with uncertainty in mind, and update your assumptions as projections change.
What “Social Security won’t be there” actually means
The phrase “run out of money” can make it sound as though monthly Social Security checks will simply stop. That is not what the trustees’ 2026 projection says. The program has trust fund reserves, but it also receives continuing income, including payroll taxes. The projection is that reserves will be depleted on the dates shown below; income would continue to come in after depletion.

Depletion matters because, under the trustees’ assumptions and current law, that continuing income would not be enough to pay every dollar of scheduled benefits. The projected percentages describe the share of scheduled benefits that incoming funds could cover at depletion. They are not a current cut, and they do not establish that Congress will leave the law unchanged. Future program income, economic and demographic experience, and legislation can affect what is ultimately paid.

For a worker planning retirement, the useful distinction is between scheduled benefits—the amounts calculated under the benefit formula—and the amount the system’s projected income could pay if reserves were depleted and no changes were made. A trust fund date is an aggregate financing estimate, not an individual benefit statement.

What the 2026 projection says
The trustees report separate projections for the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) fund and for the combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASDI) funds. OASI finances retirement and survivor benefits; Disability Insurance (DI) finances disability benefits. Those measures answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Measure in the 2026 Trustees Report | Projected reserve depletion | Scheduled benefits projected payable at depletion | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| OASI, under the intermediate assumptions | Fourth quarter of 2032 | 78% | Retirement and survivor benefits |
| Combined OASDI, under the intermediate assumptions | 2034 | 83% | Retirement, survivor and disability benefits presented together |
The figures are from the Social Security Board of Trustees’ 2026 report. The trustees describe the intermediate assumptions as their best estimate; those assumptions were set in February 2026. They are assumptions for a projection, not a certainty about future conditions or policy.
For the retirement question specifically, the OASI projection is the more directly relevant line: it puts reserve depletion in 2032 Q4 and estimates that 78% of scheduled OASI benefits would be payable then. The combined figure is useful context for the two funds together, but it does not replace the separate OASI estimate. The combined funds are projected to cover 100% of scheduled benefits before reserves are depleted and 83% at depletion.

How to interpret the percentages
“78% payable” does not mean that every retiree’s check is currently 22% smaller, nor does it promise a uniform reduction of that size in the future. It is the trustees’ estimate of how much of scheduled OASI benefits could be paid from projected income at the point of reserve depletion, given their assumptions and current law. If the estimate were realized without legislative changes, it would imply a gap between scheduled benefits and the amount payable from income. The report does not tell an individual exactly what their future monthly payment would be.
The same qualification applies to the combined 83% figure. It is not an announced benefit cut or an automatic outcome. The report’s conclusion says legislative action will be needed to prevent OASI reserve depletion. It also says the combined trust funds are projected to cover full scheduled benefits on a timely basis until reserves become depleted in 2034. These statements describe a financing challenge and its projected timing; they do not determine what lawmakers will enact.
What to do now: get an estimate based on your own record
Start with your personal Social Security estimate rather than using a national projection as a substitute. The Social Security Administration’s retirement estimate can compare a selected claiming date with ages 62, full retirement age, and 70, and can incorporate expected future income. This makes it possible to examine how the estimate changes across claiming dates and work assumptions.

- Sign in to my Social Security. Review the retirement estimate tied to your earnings record. Use the SSA’s online account rather than relying only on a broad national trust fund projection.
- Choose a claiming date to examine. Compare the selected date with the options at ages 62, your full retirement age, and 70 presented by the SSA tool. The point is to see how the estimates differ on the same record, not to assume one age is best for everyone.
- Enter expected future income where the tool allows it. An estimate can change with assumptions about future earnings. Use a realistic assumption for each scenario you compare, rather than changing both the claiming date and work assumption at once.
- Compare like with like. Keep expected future earnings consistent while you compare claiming ages; then, if useful, test a different earnings assumption separately. This makes it easier to identify which input caused the estimate to change.
- Save the result as a planning input, not a promise. The personalized estimate is about your record and chosen scenario. It does not eliminate uncertainty in future program financing or establish the exact amount payable decades from now.
The SSA also lists an online calculator that requires the user’s earnings record and a quick calculator that produces rough estimates. A rough calculator can help with an initial sense of scale, but it is not a replacement for the estimate based on your own record and assumptions.

Build a retirement plan that can handle more than one outcome
It is reasonable to include Social Security in retirement planning; the 2026 projection does not say that benefits will vanish. It is also prudent not to make a plan that works only if every scheduled dollar is paid exactly as currently calculated. The trustees’ estimate shows why: under the intermediate assumptions, projected income at depletion would cover less than the full scheduled amount.
A useful planning exercise is to compare at least two versions of your retirement income picture: one using your current SSA estimate, and another that tests how your budget would look if the amount available from Social Security were lower than scheduled. The second version is a stress test, not a forecast. The trustees’ percentages are national estimates at fund depletion; they should not be presented as a personal haircut or applied mechanically as your own future benefit.

For each version, distinguish income sources and expenses rather than blending everything into a single assumed Social Security number. This helps reveal whether a change in one source would require a different retirement date, spending plan, savings target, or work plan. The sources cited here do not prescribe a savings amount, a particular investment portfolio, or a universal claiming age; those choices depend on a person’s circumstances and require more than the trust fund projection alone.
Use scenarios without treating them as predictions
- Base case: Use the personal SSA estimate for a selected claiming date and a stated future-earnings assumption.
- Alternative claiming case: Compare other claiming dates using the same earnings assumption, so the effect of timing is visible.
- Lower-benefit stress test: Ask whether the plan remains workable if benefits available in retirement are below the scheduled estimate. Treat this as a resilience check rather than a claim that a particular reduction will occur.
- Review case: Revisit the assumptions when your work plans, retirement timing, or the official projections change.
This approach avoids two opposite mistakes: assuming that Social Security disappears entirely, and assuming that every current scheduled estimate is guaranteed in full regardless of future financing or legislation.

The dates and percentages above come from the 2026 Trustees Report and its intermediate assumptions, set in February 2026. The report is a projection based on economic, demographic, and program assumptions; actual experience can differ, and legislation can change the program. A later trustees report may therefore show different dates or payable percentages.

When you revisit the issue, check the latest annual Trustees Report and compare like measures: OASI with OASI, or combined OASDI with combined OASDI. Note both the projected depletion date and the percentage of scheduled benefits payable at that point. A year alone does not explain the size of the projected financing shortfall, while a percentage without identifying the fund can be misleading.
Also keep the aggregate projection separate from your personal estimate. The trustees report addresses the system’s financing as a whole. The SSA retirement estimate uses your earnings record and scenario inputs. They answer related but distinct questions: what the system is projected to finance and what your own record currently implies under the tool’s assumptions.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading depletion as zero benefits. The 2026 report projects continuing income after reserves are depleted, with 78% of scheduled OASI benefits or 83% of scheduled combined OASDI benefits payable at depletion under the respective projections.
- Mixing up the funds. OASI covers retirement and survivor benefits; combined OASDI includes DI as well. The dates and percentages differ.
- Calling the projection a promised cut. The amounts are estimates under the trustees’ intermediate assumptions, not current benefit reductions or guarantees of future policy.
- Using a national percentage as a personal forecast. The aggregate report does not calculate the exact future check for an individual. Use your own SSA estimate for personal-record scenarios.
- Assuming future law cannot change. The trustees explicitly identify legislative action as necessary to prevent OASI reserve depletion. The projection describes current-law financing, not a settled legislative outcome.
- Ignoring assumptions when comparing estimates. A changed earnings input can affect an estimate. Hold inputs steady when comparing claiming dates, then test other assumptions separately.
