If your federal student loan payment rises after a repayment-plan change, check the notice and your StudentAid.gov account first. The increase may reflect a move off SAVE, missed income-driven repayment recertification, a scheduled increase on a graduated plan, or an account or servicing problem. Identify the reason and any deadline before choosing a next step.
Start with the bill, the notice, and your account
Compare your new billing statement with the plan-change notice and the loan information in your StudentAid.gov Dashboard. Write down the new monthly amount, the plan name, the first due date, and any action deadline shown in the notice. Your servicer sends billing information and handles federal loan billing, so check that your contact details are current and that you are receiving its messages. Federal Student Aid’s payment-preparation guidance explains how to review your account and prepare for payments.

Do not assume the bill is wrong simply because the amount changed. A payment can rise because your repayment plan changed, your IDR recertification was late, your plan has scheduled increases, or a transferred account has incomplete or incorrect information. The notice and account history can help distinguish these cases.

Make a simple side-by-side comparison: what did you pay before, what does the new bill say, when does the new amount begin, and what plan name appears for each loan? Check whether the notice describes an action you need to take or simply explains a change. If a detail differs between the bill, notice, and Dashboard, note the exact discrepancy before contacting the servicer. Having the dates and plan names in front of you makes it easier to ask for a specific explanation rather than a general review.

This guidance concerns federal student loans. The right plan and payment depend on the borrower’s loans, eligibility, and account details. Federal Student Aid’s guidance cited here was reviewed October 8, 2026; rely on the date and instructions in your own account and current servicer notice.
Check whether your notice is about the end of SAVE
A court order ended the SAVE Plan in March 2026, according to Federal Student Aid’s SAVE transition FAQ. Borrowers affected by the change must select another eligible plan after receiving a notice from their servicer. Notices began going out July 1, 2026, in groups, so people with the same servicer may receive them at different times.
Use the response period and deadline in your own notice—not a date reported for another borrower. The 90-day period to respond runs from the date of the servicer’s notice. If you do not choose a plan after receiving a final 30-day notice, you may be automatically enrolled in the Standard or Tiered Standard plan, depending on when your loans were disbursed. Federal Student Aid cautions that a payment on either plan may be higher than an IDR payment.
Recommended Free Tools
The notice date matters because borrowers are being contacted in groups. Do not calculate your own deadline from July 1, the date a news story was published, or another borrower’s notice. Find the date on your actual servicer communication and follow its response instructions. If you cannot tell when the response period starts, or whether your account has already moved to another plan, ask the servicer to confirm both in writing or through a secure message.
- Read the entire servicer notice and locate its response deadline and instructions for choosing a plan.
- Use the Loan Simulator to review estimated payments for plans that may fit your circumstances.
- Confirm eligibility and the application or selection process with your servicer, especially if the notice or account does not clearly show what applies to your loans.
- Save the notice and make a note of the date you submitted any plan choice or application. If you do not receive confirmation, ask the servicer how to check its status.
Plan availability depends on details such as loan type and disbursement dates. A payment estimate is not confirmation that you qualify or that a plan has taken effect. The Standard and Tiered Standard plans are possible automatic placements described in the transition guidance, not necessarily the only choices available to you. Check the plans you are eligible for and take the action required by your own notice.

Find out whether IDR recertification changed your payment
Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans require borrowers to update income and family-size information each year. Federal Student Aid says a missed recertification can mean your payment is no longer based on those details, which may increase the amount. Find your recertification date in the StudentAid.gov Dashboard under My Loans, and submit the update before that date when possible because processing takes time. See the IDR frequently asked questions for current guidance.
Federal Student Aid’s warning is direct: “Not recertifying on time could increase your monthly payment amount since your payments will no longer be based on your income and family size or number of dependents.” In other words, a higher payment after an annual update deadline does not by itself show that the servicer made a calculation error. First verify the recertification date, whether the update was submitted, and whether it was processed.

Ask whether the higher bill reflects a missed recertification, when the new amount takes effect, and whether your submitted information has been received and processed. Do not assume that submitting an update immediately changes the amount due; confirm the effective date and what to pay while the request is pending.
Because processing takes time, leave room between the date you submit information and the recertification deadline whenever possible. If the deadline has passed, do not wait for the next annual cycle to ask what can be done: send the current information through the official channel and ask the servicer whether it can recalculate your payment. Keep confirmation of the submission and ask how to verify that all requested information arrived. If your income or family size has not changed, still ask whether a missed update or another account event explains the new amount.
Check for a graduated increase or a servicing issue
Graduated repayment schedule
Some graduated repayment plans are designed to raise payments over time. Compare the amount and effective date on your bill with the schedule in your plan information. If the increase appears consistent with the schedule, ask your servicer to explain the calculation and the remaining payment schedule if either is unclear.

A scheduled increase is different from a one-time correction to a bill or a move to a different plan. Check whether the plan name stayed the same and whether the notice describes a scheduled step. If the amount or timing does not match the plan information you can see, ask the servicer to explain which schedule it used and how it arrived at the new payment.
Loan transfer or account mismatch
If your loan recently moved to a new servicer, account history may take time to appear. Review the plan name and other loan details in the new account. If they look incorrect or incomplete, contact the new servicer and ask it to verify the account and payment calculation. Federal Student Aid’s guide, “So Your Loan Was Transferred—What’s Next?”, describes what borrowers can expect after a transfer.
Do not treat missing history alone as proof that the plan or bill is wrong, since account information may take time to populate after a transfer. Instead, identify what is missing—such as plan details or payment history—and ask the new servicer to confirm what it has received and what plan it currently shows. If you have a prior notice or statement, use it to point out the specific difference.
Compare plans before you make a choice
Use the official Federal Student Aid repayment-plan information and Loan Simulator to compare estimates. Look beyond the monthly payment: a lower payment is not necessarily the lowest total cost or the best fit for your goals.
- Monthly payment: Can you manage the amount within your current budget?
- Total paid over time: How does the estimated total compare across eligible plans?
- Eligibility: Does the plan accept your loan types and account for their disbursement dates?
- Income and family size: Is the payment calculated using current information about your circumstances?
- Forgiveness progress: Could the plan affect your progress toward forgiveness? Verify the implications for your specific loans and circumstances.
These comparison points are related, but they are not interchangeable. A plan with a lower estimated monthly amount may not have the lowest estimated total paid over time. A plan that appears attractive in the Simulator may not be available for every loan, because loan type and disbursement dates affect eligibility. And if you are tracking progress toward forgiveness, ask how a change could affect your particular progress rather than assuming all repayment plans treat it the same way.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask the servicer specific questions if the reason is unclear
When you call or send a secure message, have your notice and latest statement available. Ask the servicer to identify the plan currently applied to each loan and explain the calculation behind the new payment. Focus on questions that can resolve the discrepancy:
- Which plan and payment amount are currently on my account, and when did they take effect?
- What specific change caused the increase: a plan transition, recertification status, scheduled plan step, or something else?
- Is an IDR application or updated income-and-family-size submission pending, and is anything missing?
- What deadline applies to my account, and what action must I take to meet it?
- If I cannot afford the bill, what eligible alternatives are available, and what are their effects?
Keep a record of the date, the representative or message channel, the explanation, and any action you agree to take. If the servicer says an application is pending, ask how to verify its status and what payment is due in the meantime.
Be concrete when describing the issue: give the old and new amount, the dates shown, the plan names, and whether there has been a recent recertification or loan transfer. Ask the servicer to separate the explanation of the calculation from the question of what action you should take. For example, you can ask both why the amount changed and whether an application or plan choice is still awaiting processing. If the answer does not resolve a mismatch between your bill and account, restate the mismatch and ask what information the servicer needs to investigate it.
If the payment is still unaffordable
First compare eligible repayment plans and ask your servicer about any pending application or recalculation. If you still cannot manage the payment, ask the servicer whether deferment or forbearance is available for your situation and what consequences apply. These are not interchangeable with choosing a sustainable repayment plan; understand the terms and effects before agreeing to either option.

You can use Federal Student Aid and your loan servicer directly to review plans and apply. A paid intermediary is not required to submit an IDR application. The practical next step is to verify the account, compare your eligible choices, and get a clear answer about the payment and deadline from the official source handling your loan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my federal student loan payment go up after my repayment plan changed?
Possible reasons include a transition from SAVE to another plan, a missed annual IDR recertification, a scheduled increase under a graduated plan, or incomplete or incorrect information after a loan transfer. Compare your notice, bill, and StudentAid.gov account, then ask your servicer to identify the reason for your specific payment.
What should I do if I have a pending IDR application?
Contact your servicer to verify that the application was received, whether anything is missing, and how to check its status. Ask what payment is due while it is pending and whether the current bill will change only after the servicer processes the request. Do not assume submission immediately changes the amount due.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How long do I have to choose a plan after a SAVE notice?
The SAVE transition FAQ says the 90-day response period runs from the date of your servicer notice. Notices began July 1, 2026 and are being sent in groups, so follow the deadline in your own notice rather than another borrower’s date. If no choice is made after a final 30-day notice, automatic enrollment in Standard or Tiered Standard may follow, depending on loan disbursement timing.
Can I lower my IDR payment if my income or family situation changed?
Submit updated information through Manage Your Plan or contact your servicer to request recalculation. Check your recertification date in the StudentAid.gov Dashboard under My Loans, submit before the date when possible, and ask the servicer when a recalculated amount would take effect.
Should I choose the plan with the lowest monthly payment?
Not automatically. Compare estimated monthly payment and total paid over time, confirm eligibility based on your loan types and disbursement dates, and consider whether the plan uses current income and family information or could affect forgiveness progress. Use the Loan Simulator for estimates and confirm your options with the servicer.
The Bottom Line
A higher payment may reflect a real plan transition, missed IDR recertification, a scheduled graduated increase, or an account issue. Check the notice deadline and account details, use the Loan Simulator to compare eligible plans, and ask your servicer to explain the calculation and any pending application before deciding what to do.
