Start by comparing realistic expenses with Social Security, pension, and retirement-account income. Then check whether your earnings record, work plans, contribution options, benefit timing, or health coverage leave room to improve the picture. No single change is right for everyone; your health, cash needs, family circumstances, taxes, and plan rules all matter.
First, find out whether there is a real shortfall
“Falling short” can mean different things: your projected income may not cover essential bills, may not support your preferred lifestyle, or may depend on assumptions that need checking. Before making a major decision, put the expected numbers in one place. The Social Security Administration (SSA) notes that retirement may last 20 years or more and that many people need resources beyond Social Security, including savings, investments, pensions, or retirement accounts (SSA: Anytime is the Right Time to Save for Your Future).

Build a simple income-and-expense picture
- Expenses: List recurring costs such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, debt payments, and healthcare. Separate essential costs from spending you could reduce or defer.
- Social Security: Sign in to my Social Security to review your earnings record and estimates at different claiming ages. Use estimates for more than one age rather than treating one figure as inevitable.
- Pension income: Check your benefit statement and plan terms for the amount, start date, survivor option, and any conditions that affect your payment.
- Retirement accounts and other income: List account balances and potential income sources, but do not assume a particular investment return or withdrawal rate. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal budget or withdrawal formula.
Compare expected monthly income with expected monthly costs, and note which figures are estimates or could change. A gap in essential spending calls for a different response from a gap in optional spending. If the result depends on uncertain account withdrawals, taxes, or benefit choices, treat it as a planning question—not a guaranteed forecast.
Make the comparison useful by noting when each income source could start, not just its estimated amount. Wages may stop when you retire; a pension may have a start date and survivor provisions; Social Security depends partly on the age you claim. The balance in an account is not the same thing as a guaranteed monthly payment. There is no single official budget or withdrawal calculation in the sources cited here, so avoid treating a generic rule of thumb as a personalized answer.

Check your Social Security earnings record and work horizon
SSA bases retirement benefits on a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings. If there are fewer than 35 years with earnings, zero-earnings years count in the calculation; low-earning years can also weigh it down. Additional work may replace a lower year with a higher one, potentially increasing the benefit, though the result depends on the earnings record and cannot be assumed in advance (SSA: Your Retirement Age and When You Stop Work).
Review the record before making a claiming decision
- Open your personal Social Security account and check the earnings history shown there.
- Compare it with your own records, such as tax documents or pay statements. If something appears wrong, follow SSA’s instructions for correcting earnings information.
- Look at the estimates for several claiming ages, then consider whether continued work is feasible and desirable. More work can affect both the earnings record used for the benefit calculation and the date you stop earning wages.
Working longer is not automatically the answer. Health, caregiving duties, job availability, and the value of time away from work may matter as much as the potential benefit increase. SSA also explains that people can work, apply for benefits, or do both, subject to rules that depend on age and circumstances (SSA: Your Options: Working, Applying for Retirement Benefits, or Both?).
If you are already receiving benefits and return to work, distinguish the earnings test from the earnings-record calculation. The earnings test may affect benefits before full retirement age, while additional earnings may also affect the benefit calculation if they raise one of your highest 35 years. Review SSA’s current rules for your year and situation; do not assume that working and receiving benefits are mutually exclusive or that the test is the same as the permanent reduction for claiming early.
Compare Social Security claiming ages against your cash needs
People can generally start retirement benefits at age 62. Claiming before full retirement age reduces the monthly benefit; for people born in 1960 or later, SSA says claiming at 62 can mean a reduction of up to 30% compared with the full retirement benefit. Delaying past full retirement age increases the monthly amount through delayed retirement credits, which stop accruing at age 70. Early-claim reductions and delayed adjustments have lasting effects on the retirement benefit (SSA FAQ, March 13, 2024; SSA: Delayed Retirement Credits).

SSA does not identify one best claiming age for everyone. A larger future monthly payment may be valuable, but waiting requires a way to pay bills in the meantime. Claiming sooner provides income earlier, but at a lower monthly amount. Compare the alternatives using your own estimates, savings, other income, health, family circumstances, and need for liquidity.
Questions to put side by side
- Can you cover essential costs if you delay claiming, and what source would cover them?
- Would a lower benefit now be more useful than a higher one later, given your current cash needs?
- How do your health and family circumstances affect your expectations and priorities? No one can know exactly how long they will need retirement income.
- Could a spouse’s or other family benefits affect the household decision? SSA’s retirement planning guidance includes family benefits as a consideration.
- How might taxes or Medicare Part B premiums affect the amount you actually have available? SSA notes that benefits may be taxable and Part B premiums may be deducted from benefits; check your individual tax situation against current IRS guidance.
For a practical comparison, write down the estimated monthly amount at each age you are considering and the years of expenses you would need to cover before claiming. This does not settle the decision by itself: the value of earlier cash, the higher later payment, health, other household benefits, and available savings all matter. Delayed retirement credits stop at age 70, but that fact alone does not make waiting until 70 the right choice.
Do not confuse the reduction for claiming before full retirement age with the Social Security earnings test. The earnings test can affect benefits when a person works while receiving them before full retirement age; it is a separate rule from the permanent early-claiming adjustment. SSA’s Receiving Benefits While Working page explains the earnings test and how additional earnings may affect a benefit record. Check its current limits for the year that applies to you.

If you are still working, ask your plan administrator or review your plan documents before changing contributions. Ask specifically how your plan calculates a match, whether you must meet plan conditions to keep it, and which contribution types it accepts. Do not assume that a match is guaranteed or that the full IRS limit is available under your employer’s plan. An IRA is another possible savings route, but eligibility and the combined traditional-and-Roth limit apply; check the current IRS rules rather than assuming you can contribute the maximum.
2026 contribution limits
The IRS’s stated limits for 2026 are annual tax limits, not a recommendation or a guarantee that you can contribute the maximum. Plan rules, eligibility, and affordability determine what is available to you.
| Account or limit | 2026 limit | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| 401(k) elective deferrals | $24,500 | Basic annual limit; applicable plan and eligibility rules still apply. |
| 401(k) age-50 catch-up | $8,000 | For eligible participants age 50 or older when the plan permits; the IRS states this for traditional and safe-harbor 401(k) plans. |
| Higher 401(k) catch-up | $11,250 | For eligible participants aged 60–63 in 2026, subject to plan rules. |
| Traditional and Roth IRA contributions | $7,500 total | Combined annual limit across traditional and Roth IRAs; eligibility rules apply. |
| IRA catch-up | $1,100 additional | For eligible people age 50 or older. |
These 2026 limits come from the IRS’s 401(k) and profit-sharing plan contribution limits, IRA contribution limits, and annual cost-of-living adjustment table. Verify current figures and your eligibility before acting. Contributing more can be one option, but not if it leaves you unable to meet current expenses or forces you to rely on costly borrowing.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Include healthcare and Medicare timing in the decision
Most people do not have Medicare until age 65. If you leave a job before then, employer health coverage may end before Medicare eligibility, so include the cost and availability of interim coverage in any plan to work less or retire sooner. Separately, if you continue group coverage through work, coordinate Medicare enrollment carefully: enrolling in Part B late may delay coverage or cost more in some circumstances. The relevant details depend on your coverage and situation; consult SSA’s work-and-benefits options guidance and confirm enrollment rules before coverage changes.

Health coverage can affect when it is practical to stop working, but it does not by itself determine when you should claim Social Security. Treat work, Medicare enrollment, and benefit claiming as related decisions with distinct rules.
Before leaving a job, find out when employer coverage ends and what coverage will be available until Medicare eligibility. If you keep working with group coverage after age 65, ask how that coverage coordinates with Medicare and when you need to enroll in Part B. A delayed enrollment can create a coverage delay or higher costs in some circumstances, so do not rely on a general assumption about your employer plan; confirm the rules for your specific situation first.

| Option | Potential effect | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Continue working, if feasible | Provides wages; additional earnings may replace lower years in SSA’s 35-year calculation. | Health, job availability, caregiving, workplace benefits, and any earnings-test effect if already receiving benefits before full retirement age. |
| Delay Social Security | Can raise the monthly benefit through age 70, but means covering expenses while waiting. | Cash reserves, other income, health, family benefits, and healthcare coverage. |
| Increase eligible workplace or IRA contributions | May add to retirement savings over time. | Employer match and plan provisions, eligibility, annual limits, cash flow, and whether a contribution is affordable. |
| Adjust spending or retirement timing | Can reduce the amount of income needed or change how long savings must support you. | Which expenses are essential, what trade-offs are acceptable, and whether health or work constraints allow the change. |
Compare each choice on near-term cash versus future monthly income, eligibility and plan restrictions, effects on Social Security or account balances, healthcare timing, taxes, and your work, health, family, and liquidity constraints. For example, delaying benefits may raise future monthly income but require another source for today’s bills; continuing work may provide wages but may not be feasible or desirable. Increasing contributions may build savings only if you can afford them without undermining current needs. None of these options guarantees that the gap will close.

No advisor or financial product can guarantee that a shortfall will disappear.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether my retirement savings are really falling short?
Compare expected expenses with income from Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts, and other sources. Separate essential costs from flexible spending, and mark estimates that could change. Review Social Security estimates at several claiming ages through my Social Security; there is no universal budget or withdrawal formula that applies to everyone.
Should I claim Social Security early or wait?
There is no single best age for everyone. Claiming can generally begin at 62, but claiming before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount; delaying increases it through age 70. Compare the income you would receive at different ages with your cash needs, health, family circumstances, other income, and ability to cover expenses while waiting.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan working longer increase my Social Security benefit?
Potentially. SSA uses the highest 35 years of earnings, so additional earnings may replace a lower year; missing earnings years count as zeros. If you receive benefits while working before full retirement age, the earnings test is a separate issue from the early-claiming reduction. Check SSA’s current rules for the year and your situation.
What are the 2026 catch-up contribution limits?
For eligible 401(k) participants, the 2026 age-50 catch-up limit is $8,000 when the plan permits, with a higher $11,250 limit for eligible participants aged 60–63. The 2026 IRA catch-up is $1,100 for eligible people age 50 or older. Plan provisions, eligibility, and affordability matter; verify current IRS guidance before contributing.
Could Medicare timing affect when I retire or claim benefits?
Yes, it can affect whether leaving work is practical. Most people do not have Medicare until age 65, and enrolling in Part B late may delay coverage or cost more in some circumstances. Check when employer coverage ends and coordinate Medicare enrollment based on your specific coverage. Healthcare timing is related to, but distinct from, Social Security claiming.
The Bottom Line
Measure the gap before changing course: compare realistic expenses with Social Security estimates, pension income, and savings. Then check your earnings record, plan rules, contribution eligibility, claiming choices, and healthcare timing. Work, save more, adjust spending, or claim at a different age only if the trade-offs fit your health, cash needs, and circumstances. There is no guaranteed fix or one best answer for everyone.
