Ask your broker—in writing—whether it is ending trading, custody, or both, and what deadline, fees, and disposition options apply. Before starting a transfer, confirm that another broker will accept the exact security. A delisting alone does not mean your shares were canceled or are worthless, but an OTC sale or transfer is not guaranteed.
First find out what “stops supporting” means
A broker may stop accepting trades in a security while continuing to hold it, or it may also require you to move or dispose of the position. Those are different situations. Ask the firm for its policy and instructions in writing; the questions below are practical ways to clarify your account, not a prescribed regulatory script.
- Is the firm ending trading only, or will it also stop holding the position in custody?
- Can it accept a sell order, including an unsolicited OTC order if that is relevant?
- Is the restriction specific to the firm, the security’s trading status, or a transfer or depository limitation?
- What deadline, fees, and disposition choices apply?
- What exact security identifier and share quantity does the firm have on record, and what issuer or transfer-agent contact information is available?
Check what happened to the security
Delisting means a stock has been removed from a particular exchange. It does not, by itself, establish that the shares were canceled. Find out whether the security is now traded or quoted over the counter (OTC), whether trading is suspended, or whether an issuer action—such as a merger, liquidation, bankruptcy, or cancellation—changed the shares.
Some stocks removed from exchanges continue trading OTC, but OTC trading or a usable quote is not guaranteed. A suspension is distinct from delisting, and OTC quotations do not necessarily resume when an SEC suspension ends. See the SEC’s trading-suspensions bulletin and FINRA’s overview of OTC equities.

Can you transfer the shares to another brokerage?
Possibly, but do not assume that another broker can hold or process the security just because it accepts ordinary stock transfers. Contact the potential receiving firm first with the exact security identifier and ask whether it will accept the shares. Also ask whether it can receive the position through a manual transfer if ACATS is unavailable.
Many brokerage account transfers use ACATS, but some assets cannot move through that system or may not be accepted by the receiving firm. A transfer that cannot use ACATS may be handled manually and take longer. FINRA explains the customer account transfer process; the SEC’s transfer bulletin gives an approximate three-to-five-business-day period for ordinary ACATS transfers when there are no problems. That general estimate is not a promise for a delisted or nontransferable security.

What if the shares cannot be transferred?
Ask your current broker for its written disposition process, including available choices, charges, and timing. FINRA Rule 11870 requires written contact about disposition of nontransferable assets in covered transfers, but the choices available in a particular case depend on the security and firms involved. The rule does not mean every investor can use every possible remedy.
Options described in SEC guidance can include leaving the asset at the old firm, selling it if a sale is possible, or arranging physical delivery. Ask the firm which options actually apply to your position. Do not assume that a paper certificate is available or that the broker can sell the shares for you.

Only if the security can be traded or quoted, your broker will handle the order, and a buyer is available. OTC securities can be illiquid, so an available quote does not guarantee that you can sell promptly or at a particular price. If you are considering a sale, confirm the broker’s order process and any restrictions before entering an order.
Are delisted shares worthless?
Not solely because they were delisted. Delisting, a trading suspension, cancellation of shares, and a market with no buyers are different circumstances. Verify the security’s current status and any issuer corporate action rather than infer the value of your holding from the exchange listing ending.

The SEC warns that “If there is no market to trade the shares, they may be worthless.” This is a general warning in its trading-suspensions bulletin, not a valuation of any individual holding.

Selling a position may affect your taxes; delisting alone does not establish that you can claim a tax loss. Consult a tax adviser about your circumstances before making a disposition decision. Keeping shares at the old firm may involve fees, so ask for the applicable charges and deadline in writing.

Physical delivery can introduce loss or theft risk and may make the shares harder or slower to sell than an electronically held position. Compare the available routes based on whether the exact security is eligible, which firms will custody or process it, the transfer method and timing, fees and deadlines, whether a market and buyer exist, and the tax and custody consequences. No one route is best for every security or account.
