Re:

What to do if you think your crypto wallet seed phrase has been exposed

An exposed recovery phrase should be treated as a compromised private key. Follow an ordered migration, approval-review, account-security, and reporting plan to protect what remains.

Treat the seed phrase as compromised immediately. On a device you trust, create a completely new wallet with a newly generated recovery phrase, move every remaining asset to it, and stop using the old phrase. Then review token approvals, disconnect unfamiliar decentralized applications (dApps), secure linked exchange accounts, and preserve evidence if anything has already disappeared.

Do these things first

  1. Stop the suspected contact. Close the website or app, stop replying to the person claiming to be support, and do not run commands, install software, or share screenshots that reveal wallet details. Never paste the phrase here or send it to anyone for “verification.”
  2. Choose a trustworthy device. If the computer or phone where you entered the phrase could have malware, do not create the replacement wallet on it. Use a device you have updated and can reasonably trust, or obtain help from a qualified security professional.
  3. Create a fresh wallet and phrase. Generate the new phrase inside the wallet software or hardware device you intend to use. Do not reuse, “edit,” or import the exposed phrase.
  4. Move what remains promptly. Check the destination address and network character by character before sending. An attacker who has the phrase can act at any time.
  5. Inspect permissions and connected apps. Revoke suspicious token approvals and disconnect unknown dApps. A revocation transaction cannot undo a transfer that has already settled.
  6. Harden related accounts and report losses. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts, enable two-factor authentication, preserve transaction evidence, and use official provider or law-enforcement reporting channels.

This sequence follows guidance published by Kraken Support on September 15, 2026; the Singapore Police Force on July 1, 2026; ethereum.org; and MyEtherWallet Help Center. It is an emergency migration, not a way to repair the old wallet.

Why an exposed phrase is a key compromise

A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, is the master secret from which a wallet derives its private keys and addresses. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet on another device and authorize transactions. They do not need your phone’s wallet-app passcode, email password, or biometric unlock.

Changing an app password, setting a new PIN, or uninstalling the wallet application therefore does not retire the phrase. Disconnecting a dApp also does not invalidate it. The old phrase remains unsafe even after you have transferred the visible balance elsewhere; it should never be used again.

Exposure includes more than deliberately sending the words to a stranger. Treat the phrase as compromised if you entered it into a website, typed it into an unfamiliar app, stored it in cloud notes or an email account that may have been accessed, photographed it, or allowed someone remote access while it was visible. Phishing pages often imitate wallet recovery screens, and online storage creates additional copies that can be stolen.

How to create the replacement wallet safely

Use a clean setup

Disconnect from the suspicious page and download wallet software only from the developer’s official distribution channel. Check that the address and application name are correct; paid search results, social-media messages, and pop-up “support” links can lead to imitations. If you suspect the current device is infected, use another trusted device rather than trying to diagnose it while funds are at risk.

Generate, record, and verify a new phrase

  1. Start the wallet’s “create new wallet” or equivalent option. Do not choose “restore,” “import,” or “use existing phrase.”
  2. Let the wallet generate the phrase itself. Do not invent words, photograph the screen, or copy the phrase into a clipboard, password manager, cloud drive, email, or note-taking app.
  3. Write the words in the required order on paper or another offline medium, then complete the wallet’s verification exercise. Keep the record away from cameras and other people.
  4. Store the record in a place protected from casual access, fire, water, and loss. Make a second offline copy only if you can secure it equally well.
  5. Test that you can identify the new wallet’s receive address and recovery process without revealing the phrase. Never send the phrase to a support agent, friend, tax preparer, or “recovery” service.

If you choose a hardware wallet, use it to generate the new wallet and keep its phrase private. Singapore Police Force guidance says a hardware-wallet phrase should be entered only directly on the device during initial setup or recovery. A hardware device cannot make a phrase that was already disclosed safe again.

Move the remaining assets

After the new wallet is ready, send assets from the exposed wallet to addresses controlled by the new phrase. Work network by network: an address on one chain may not receive an asset sent over another, even when the address text looks similar. Keep enough of the native network token in the old wallet to pay each required transaction fee, but do not leave funds there merely to avoid a small fee.

  1. In the new wallet, select the correct network and copy the receive address.
  2. Compare the first and last characters and, where practical, the entire address on both devices. QR codes reduce typing errors but do not prove that a substituted address is legitimate.
  3. Send a small test amount when the asset and fee structure make that practical. Wait for the transaction to appear on the intended network.
  4. Send the remainder, then record the transaction hash and destination. Confirm settlement using the network’s recognized block explorer, not a link supplied by a stranger.

Move assets promptly rather than waiting for an attacker to make the first transaction. Blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed. A failed or delayed transfer can require network-specific troubleshooting, but no legitimate helper can guarantee that already confirmed funds will be returned.

Seed-phrase exposure versus a malicious approval

These are related but different incidents. Connecting a wallet to an unfamiliar dApp does not, by itself, necessarily transfer assets. A user may still have to sign an approval or transaction. An approval can grant a contract permission to spend particular tokens later, while a signed transaction can transfer assets or change contract state.

If the phrase itself was exposed, migrating to a fresh wallet is the priority regardless of approvals. If you only connected to a suspicious dApp or signed an unfamiliar approval, review permissions immediately even if the phrase was never shown.

Review and revoke permissions

  1. Open the wallet’s connected-sites or permissions screen and disconnect dApps you do not recognize or no longer use.
  2. Use a reputable approval-management tool for each relevant network to identify token allowances granted to unfamiliar contracts.
  3. Revoke suspicious allowances by signing a revocation transaction from the affected wallet. Check the contract, network, fee, and destination shown by the wallet before signing.
  4. Recheck after confirmation. Revocation stops the allowance from being used in the future; it does not retrieve tokens already transferred.

Hardware wallets require you to approve signatures on the device, but they do not make a malicious approval harmless. The Singapore Police Force specifically warns that an approval can enable later unauthorized transactions even when a hardware wallet is being used.

When the device itself may be compromised

Warning signs include unexpected wallet pop-ups, unknown browser extensions, remote-control software, antivirus alerts, unexplained transactions, or a phrase entered into a page reached through an unsolicited message. Do not assume a factory reset immediately makes the device trustworthy; malware, stolen browser credentials, or an attacker who still controls an account can persist in other ways.

  • Use a separate, updated device for the new wallet and migration.
  • Change important passwords from a clean device, beginning with email and exchange accounts.
  • Enable two-factor authentication using an authenticator application or security key where supported; do not rely solely on a compromised phone number.
  • After funds are safe, have the suspect device professionally examined or reinstall its operating system from a trusted source before using it for financial activity.

What a hardware wallet can and cannot do

A hardware wallet keeps signing keys in a dedicated device and can reduce exposure to many online attacks. Singapore Police Force guidance from February 5, 2025 recommends considering one, and MyEtherWallet suggests it may be appropriate for larger holdings. It is an option for securing the new wallet after migration, not a repair for the old one.

Question What a hardware wallet helps with What it does not solve
Where keys are kept Keys can remain on a dedicated device rather than in an always-online browser or phone. It cannot erase a phrase already copied by someone else.
Recovery phrase handling The device can generate a new phrase and keep signing operations local. Entering that phrase on a website, computer, or phone exposes it.
Transaction review The device may display transaction details before signing. It cannot identify every malicious contract or make a user-approved scam safe.
Approvals It can require physical confirmation of a signature. A signed malicious approval may still permit later spending.
Compromised setup device It reduces some online exposure when initialized correctly. It does not protect a phrase entered into a compromised computer or fake app.

Choose based on offline key generation and storage, supported assets and networks, how clearly transactions and approvals are displayed, recovery procedures, and whether setup can avoid a device you suspect is infected. No particular model is required to follow the emergency steps above.

If funds are already missing

First secure any assets that remain by following the migration process. Then preserve evidence without interacting further with the suspected attacker.

  • Notify the exchange, wallet provider, or other service through an address found on its official website or inside the authenticated account.
  • Report the incident to the appropriate law-enforcement or cybercrime authority in your jurisdiction.

Kraken Support states that a seed-phrase wallet cannot be frozen by the provider and that assets sent elsewhere cannot be retrieved by it. ethereum.org likewise explains that confirmed blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. Anyone promising guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee, private keys, or another phrase is presenting a second scam risk.

Common actions that fail

  • Changing only the wallet password: the exposed phrase still controls the wallet.
  • Importing the old phrase into a different app: this creates another copy without removing the attacker’s access.
  • Waiting to see whether anything happens: an attacker can submit a transaction at any time.
  • Disconnecting a dApp and stopping there: an existing approval may remain active.
  • Buying a hardware wallet and reusing the old phrase: the compromise follows the phrase.
  • Paying a recovery service: no intermediary can reverse a confirmed on-chain transfer, and the request often seeks more money or secrets.
  • Signing a “security” transaction sent by a stranger: the transaction itself may authorize the theft it claims to prevent.

A practical decision guide

What happened Priority response Additional check
You typed the phrase into a site or app, sent it to someone, or stored it where an attacker may access it. Create a new wallet on a trusted device and move remaining assets immediately. Review approvals and secure linked accounts.
You only connected to an unfamiliar dApp and never signed anything. Disconnect it and inspect wallet activity. Confirm that no unfamiliar approval or transaction was signed.
You signed an unfamiliar approval but never exposed the phrase. Revoke the allowance promptly. Check every affected network for additional approvals or transfers.
The device may have malware. Use a different trusted device for wallet creation and migration. Change passwords and clean or replace the suspect device afterward.
Assets have already left the wallet. Secure what remains and preserve evidence. Contact providers and authorities; reject fee-based recovery promises.

Keeping the new wallet safe

Store the new recovery phrase offline, limit who knows that the wallet exists, and never enter it into a web form or send it in a message. Separate everyday spending from long-term holdings so a single interaction does not expose everything. Before signing, read the network, recipient, amount, contract, and approval scope displayed by the wallet. Review connected dApps and allowances periodically, especially after using a new service.

Recovery planning matters as much as secrecy: make sure the person who must restore the wallet understands where the offline record is kept without receiving a digital copy. Test only with a small amount and never disclose the complete phrase during a support call.
