To verify a crypto wallet migration, first set up the destination wallet, create a receiving address for the exact asset and network, compare that address in the wallet and—if applicable—on the hardware device, then send a small test transaction and wait for on-chain confirmation. Move the remaining balance only after the test appears at the intended destination. Keep the old wallet and its backup available until receipt is confirmed. A wallet-app reset or reinstall does not move coins; only a signed blockchain transaction does.

What a wallet migration actually changes

“Migration” can describe two different actions, and the verification method depends on which one you are doing.

Restoring an existing wallet

Entering a recovery phrase into compatible wallet software restores the accounts controlled by that phrase. It does not create a new wallet or move assets on-chain. The phrase is the authority: anyone who obtains it may control the accounts and their funds. Typing it into a website, sending it to support, or importing it into an internet-connected device can expose every asset it controls.

A restore can be useful when changing apps or recovering access, but it does not repair a compromised phrase. If the phrase may have been seen, photographed, copied, or entered online, importing it into a different app or device does not make it safe.

Transferring funds to a new wallet

A transfer sends an on-chain transaction from the old wallet’s address to a new address, usually controlled by newly generated keys. The old wallet remains able to sign transactions until you empty it or revoke access where that is applicable. Blockchain transfers are generally irreversible: an incorrect address or unsupported network may leave the funds unrecoverable.

This guide focuses on verifying that transfer before you send the full balance. You may also restore an old wallet separately, but do not confuse a successful restore with a completed migration.

Pre-migration checks

Do these checks before copying an address or opening the send screen:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use an official destination app or device. Download the wallet software from the wallet maker’s verified channel and confirm the publisher and spelling. Bookmarking the verified site helps avoid look-alike pages.
  • Decide whether the destination needs new keys. For a move from an online wallet to hardware, MetaMask’s guidance is to generate a new recovery phrase on the hardware wallet instead of importing the online wallet’s phrase. This preserves the device’s offline-key model.
  • Record the asset and chain. Write down the exact token and network you intend to use, such as a particular Ethereum-compatible chain, before generating the address. Do not rely on an address format alone.
  • Prepare enough of the source asset for fees. The old wallet must have the network’s native fee asset available. A token balance by itself may not pay the transaction fee.
  • Use a trusted screen. Malware can replace a copied address. If a transaction is substantial, type or compare the address character by character rather than trusting the clipboard.

Never provide a recovery phrase or private key during these checks. Ethereum.org states that legitimate support will not ask for them, and Bitcoin.org gives the same warning for seed phrases and private keys.

The verification sequence

The following sequence is suitable for a normal, non-emergency move. It deliberately checks the route with a small amount before putting the rest at risk.

1. Set up the destination wallet

  1. Install or initialize the destination wallet through its official app or device setup.
  2. If the wallet generates a recovery phrase, create it on the device or in the trusted setup flow. Write it down offline in the order shown and verify the requested words when setup asks you to do so.
  3. Store the phrase where it cannot be photographed, synced, or accessed by another person. Do not put it in cloud notes, email, a password manager that is not designed for offline secrets, or an unsolicited support form.
  4. Enable the wallet’s security features, such as a device PIN, only after you have confirmed that the recovery backup is complete.

If the destination is a hardware wallet used with browser software, the software is an interface; the device should generate and protect the signing keys. Importing a phrase that was already used in an online wallet defeats that security distinction.

2. Select the exact asset and network

Open the destination wallet and select the asset you are moving. Then select the network or chain offered for that asset. A token can exist on multiple networks, and the same-looking address may not mean the same deposit route. For Ethereum and ERC-20 transfers, Trezor warns that selecting the wrong network can result in lost funds.

Check the destination wallet’s deposit instructions, not just the token name. If the destination says a particular chain is supported, choose that chain in the source wallet’s send screen as well. If either wallet uses a network label you do not recognize, stop and verify it through the wallet’s official documentation before sending.

3. Generate the receiving address

Use the destination wallet’s Receive or Deposit function for the chosen asset and network. Copy the resulting address only after confirming the asset and chain shown on the same screen. If the wallet displays a memo, tag, payment ID, or destination identifier, record that too; some custodial services require it in addition to the address.

Do not reuse an address from an old screenshot or a previous transaction unless the destination explicitly confirms that it remains valid for this asset and network. Generate a fresh receive view so the wallet’s current network selection is visible.

4. Compare the full address

Check every character of the source and destination address. Comparing only the first and last four characters is not sufficient: address-replacement malware can preserve those fragments. Ethereum.org’s security guidance is explicit: “Always make sure the address you are sending to exactly matches the desired recipient’s address before sending a transaction.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a hardware wallet, compare the address in the wallet software with the address displayed on the device itself. Approve the address only when the device screen matches the intended destination. If the two screens differ by even one character, reject the request, disconnect the device, and investigate before continuing.

5. Send a small test transaction

For a substantial move, send a small amount of the same asset on the same network first. The test should be large enough to be visible after fees but small enough that an error would not threaten your finances. Enter the receiving address manually or paste it, then perform the complete character-by-character comparison again on the final confirmation screen.

Read the transaction prompt before signing. Confirm the asset, amount, destination, network, fee, and any memo or tag. A test transaction incurs a network fee, and some networks or destinations impose minimum deposits; check those requirements before choosing the amount.

6. Wait for on-chain confirmation

Do not treat a wallet’s “submitted” or “pending” message as delivery. Use the transaction ID and the wallet’s official activity view or a reputable chain explorer to confirm that the transaction is included on-chain. Then open the destination wallet and verify that the balance or transaction history shows the test under the same asset and network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirmation time varies with the chain and its current congestion. If the transaction remains pending, do not send a second full transfer merely because the first has not appeared. Check the transaction status, fee settings, and destination network first.

7. Transfer the remainder

Only after the test is confirmed at the intended address should you send the remaining balance. Recheck the complete address and network; do not assume that a prior successful test makes a later transaction safe if you changed the asset, chain, destination account, or device.

For very large balances, consider splitting the remainder into additional batches. Each batch adds fees and checking time, but limits the amount exposed to a single data-entry or operational error.

8. Keep the source wallet available until receipt is confirmed

Do not wipe, uninstall, sell, or discard the old wallet immediately. Keep its recovery backup and signing access secured until the final transfer is confirmed in the destination and you have saved the relevant transaction records. Afterward, decide whether the old wallet should be retained for another purpose or securely retired. Never destroy the only backup before confirming that every intended asset arrived.

Asset and network checks that prevent common losses

What to verify Why it matters What to do
Asset symbol and contract Similar symbols can represent different tokens. Select the asset from the destination’s supported list and compare any contract or token identifier shown by both wallets.
Network or chain The same token may be issued on several chains; a wrong chain can make a deposit unusable or lost. Choose the exact network in both wallets. Follow the destination’s deposit instructions rather than guessing from the address format.
Native fee asset A token balance may not pay the chain fee. Leave enough of the network’s native asset in the source wallet to cover the transaction and any retry.
Memo, tag, or payment ID Some exchanges and custodial services use an identifier in addition to the address. Copy it exactly when the destination requires one; if no identifier is shown, do not invent one.
Destination minimum A deposit below a service’s minimum may not be credited automatically. Check the destination’s current minimum and include it in the test amount calculation.

An address’s visual format is not proof of network compatibility. Treat the wallet’s selected asset and network as separate fields that both need confirmation.

Hardware-wallet migration: what the device proves—and what it does not

Hardware wallets keep private keys offline while a connected app prepares transactions. The device screen gives you an independent place to verify the receiving address before approving it. That is useful protection against a compromised computer displaying a substituted address.

Hardware is not mandatory for every holder, and it does not make an exposed phrase safe. If an online wallet’s phrase has already been entered into a malicious site or copied by someone else, importing that phrase into hardware leaves the attacker with the same signing authority. Generate a new phrase on the hardware device and transfer funds to its new addresses instead.

When using a hardware wallet with a browser interface, verify the address on the physical device, not only in the browser window. Confirm the device’s network and account match the account selected in the software. Reject unexpected prompts or requests to enter the phrase into the computer.

Recovery phrases, private keys, and support scams

A recovery phrase can restore the wallet accounts derived from it; a private key can authorize transactions for its corresponding account. Possession is effectively control. No legitimate support representative needs either secret to diagnose a connection, check a transaction, or restore an interface.

  • Ignore direct messages offering to “synchronize,” “validate,” or “unlock” a wallet.
  • Read every signing prompt, including token approvals and contract interactions, rather than approving a request solely because the amount appears to be zero.

If you suspect the phrase was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised. Move assets to a newly generated wallet through a trusted device, but first assess whether an attacker is actively draining it; an ordinary leisurely test may not be appropriate in that situation.

When a small test is not enough

A successful test confirms one route: one asset, one network, one destination, and one set of transaction instructions. It does not prove that:

  • every other asset in the old wallet is supported by the destination;
  • the recovery backup can restore every account;
  • the old wallet has not been compromised;
  • a future transaction will use the same network or address;
  • the destination will credit a different token, chain, memo, or contract automatically.

Repeat the verification for each materially different asset or network. Keep a record of the destination account, network, transaction ID, and confirmation time so you can reconcile the move without relying on memory.

Direct transfer versus test-then-remainder

Approach Benefit Cost or risk Appropriate use
Send the full amount once One transaction and one fee. A wrong address, network, or memo puts the entire amount at risk. Only when the amount is modest, the route is well established, and you have independently checked every field.
Small test, then remainder Limits the amount exposed while confirming the destination route. Requires an extra transaction, fee, and waiting period. Preferred for a substantial balance or any new destination, network, or hardware setup.
Several batches after the test Further limits the impact of a later operational mistake. Additional fees and repeated checks. Useful when the balance is unusually large or operational controls require staged transfers.

The test-first method is a practical control, not a guarantee. It cannot reverse an already signed transaction or certify a backup.

Urgent moves from a possibly compromised wallet

If you see an unauthorized approval, an unknown outgoing transaction, a leaked phrase, or an attacker actively signing transactions, prioritize containment rather than following a leisurely schedule. Disconnect the suspected device from untrusted sites, use a newly initialized destination wallet, and seek instructions from the wallet maker through a channel you verify independently. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal incident-response procedure for every compromise, so avoid improvised “recovery” services and never share secrets while asking for help.

In an active-drain situation, waiting for a routine test may give the attacker more time. You still need to verify the complete destination address and correct network before signing, but the timing and fee strategy may require urgent professional or official support.

Migration failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely explanation Safe next action
The destination shows no balance after sending. The transaction is pending, unconfirmed, sent on another network, or the wallet is filtering the asset. Check the transaction ID, confirmations, asset, and network in the official wallet view or chain explorer. Do not resend until the status is understood.
The device address differs from the computer address. The request may be altered, the wrong account may be selected, or the connection may be unsafe. Reject the transaction, disconnect, verify the account and software source, and investigate before trying again.
The token arrived on an unsupported chain. The source and destination network selections did not match. Do not promise recovery. Consult the destination’s official support documentation; recovery options depend on the service and chain.
The wallet asks for the recovery phrase to “sync.” This is a strong sign of phishing or a malicious interface. Close it, do not enter the phrase, and access the wallet only through independently verified official software.
The test arrived but the full transfer is blocked. Insufficient fee asset, a destination limit, changed network, or a wallet policy may be involved. Read the current error, replenish only the required fee asset through a trusted route, and repeat the address and network checks.

No procedure can promise recovery after a wrong-address transfer. Blockchain irreversibility is why verification belongs before signing, not after an error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse a migration test with exchange ownership verification

Some exchanges use a “small deposit test” to verify that a customer controls an external wallet. Coinbase’s documented process, for example, can require an exact requested deposit amount and a 48-hour completion window. That is an account-ownership procedure between you and an exchange, not the same as sending a small test from an old personal wallet to a new personal wallet. A migration test checks that your chosen address, asset, network, and destination route work; it does not satisfy an exchange’s separate verification requirements unless the exchange explicitly says it does.

Final pre-sign checklist

  • The destination wallet was initialized through an official channel.
  • A new recovery phrase was generated when moving to hardware, rather than importing a phrase that may have been online.
  • The exact asset is selected in both wallets.
  • The correct network is selected in both wallets.
  • The complete receiving address matches, including the hardware-device screen when applicable.
  • Any memo, tag, payment ID, or minimum deposit requirement is recorded correctly.
  • The source wallet has enough native fee currency.
  • A small test transaction has confirmed on-chain and appears in the destination wallet.
  • The old wallet and its backup will remain secured until the final receipt is confirmed.
  • No person, website, or support channel has requested the recovery phrase or private key.

Following this sequence does not eliminate every blockchain risk, but it limits the amount exposed to a wrong address, wrong network, or faulty setup and gives you a verifiable checkpoint before the irreversible portion of the move.
